Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance on the holiday
On Monday, January 20, the national holiday to honor Dr. King that was established in 1986, the Santa Barbara downtown will come alive. Kicking off at 9 am in de la Guerra Plaza with a diverse program of elected officials, speakers, and music; followed at 10 am by the Unity March from the Plaza up State Street to the Arlington Theatre for the emotionally packed program of song and dance, with awards for youth Essays and Poetry and Keynote Speaker Rev. James Lawson. Dr. Lawson, who worked with Dr. King in the turbulent times of the 1950s and 60s, will put the day, the man and the movement into his perspective. Rev. Lawson helped shaped the movement for civil rights. He will deliver an eloquent closing speech for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Remembrance.
