Courage & Hope: The Seatbelt and Call My Son featuring Live Storytelling

We’d like to let the community to know about our upcoming show that highlights mental health issues–teen suicide, depression, addiction, grief and caregivers caring for their loved ones with Alzheimer’s.
Courage & Hope, 2 one-act plays featuring live storytelling. All are written by David Ker Schermerhorn, an multiple MOTH StorySlam winner and award winning filmmaker.
The Seatbelt is a poignant 35-minute play that addresses critical issues surrounding teen depression, suicidal ideation, and seatbelt awareness. The story follows Dani, a 17-year-old girl grappling with her mental health. As she navigates her struggles, the play delivers a powerful message of hope.
During intermission, there will be a brief talkback session with a licensed therapist, providing an opportunity for attendees to engage in meaningful conversations about mental health. The play is best suited for children over 15 when accompanied by adults.
The second one-act, Call My Son, offers a heartwarming yet bittersweet glimpse into the relationship between a mother with advanced Alzheimer’s and her devoted son. This touching narrative aims to provide comfort and understanding to families affected by dementia, highlighting the importance of connection and care.
David Ker Schermerhorn and Sharmila Mali, who recently celebrated their marriage at the Ojai Art Center, raised initial funding for this production through donations requested as wedding gifts. They’re co-founders of Shine A Light Theatre, Inc a 501( c)(3) that shines a light on two subjects that are close to their heart, one, about suicide prevention and intervention, and two, and families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s/dementia.
This impactful production will take place on August 23 at 7:30 PM and August 24 at 2:00 PM at the Ojai Art Center Theater, 113 S Montgomery St, Ojai, CA. Tickets are available for $20.
