SANTA BARBARA ELDERS TO PROTEST OVER CLIMATE CHANGE FUNDING BY BANKS AS PART OF NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION

WHAT: Seniors of Santa Barbara will hold a rally and march to three different banks in downtown Santa Barbara as part of a national day of action across the US to pressure the major banks to stop financing the expansion of the fossil fuel industry. These banks are being put on notice that the seniors in this country will no longer allow their savings and investment dollars to be used for the funding of BIG OIL.  This rally is among the 85 events in over half the US states taking place across the country. The day is being organized by Third Act, a group for climate activists over 60 years, with more than 50 local and national partners. The local rally and march will be co-hosted by the Fearless Grandmothers of Santa Barbara.

WHEN: 12:00 – 2: 00 pm, March 21, 2023

WHERE: Rally begins at the corner of State and Anapamu, SB.  We will then march to Chase, Wells Fargo and Bank of America locations.

BACKGROUND

The national day of action against banks over climate change comes ahead of investor resolutions at their annual general meetings next month to pressure them to stop funding climate chaos.

The top four fossil fuel financing banks are JP Morgan Chase, Citi, Bank of America and Wells Fargo, pumping over one quarter of the $4.6 trillion total financing for fossil fuels by the top 60 global banks between 2016 and 2021.

And given the banking events of the weekend, it’s more important than ever. The effect of these bank failures will be to concentrate even more money and power in the huge money center banks. Our four targets–Chase, Citi, wells-Fargo and Bank of America–were already closing in on fifty percent of total deposits; they are a regime of money.

Given that power, we have to demand that they take a constructive role in solving the biggest crisis humanity has ever faced–or at least that they stop making it worse. That’s what 32123 is all about!

Thousands and thousands of customers and potential customers have pledged to move their money out of these banks if the banks won’t move their investments out of fossil fuels.

The rally is being held as the County of Santa Barbara grapples with recent debates on ExxonMobil is looking to rebuild and reopen two pipelines formerly owned by Plains All America that were responsible for the 2015 Refugio Oil Spill damaging not only the Gaviota Coast but spilling into the Santa Barbara Channel.
