SUMMARY:Flowers on a River: Bada Shanren’s Lotusland
DESCRIPTION:UCLA professor of Art History Hui-shu Lee provides a deep and contextualized reading of the centerpiece of the exhibition—Bada Shanren’s Flowers on a River of 1697—a symphonic landscape of lotus and attached poetic ballad that unfurls in a scroll over 42 feet in length. Flowers on a River counts as one of the most important works by the secretive Bada\, thoughtfully worked out over a period of months in his late years. Not only is the scroll’s primary subject of lotus and landscape among the most personal and enduring for Bada\, the melodic verses written in his distinctive calligraphy prove equally significant. Cryptic and densely layered with allusions to past and present\, Bada’s ballad reminiscences on a personal history defined by sorrow and alienation that simmers just under the painting’s visual appeal. \n\nMary Craig Auditorium\n\n\n\nFree Students | SBMA Members\n$5 Non-Members

SUMMARY:ZZ Top
DESCRIPTION:Goldenvoice presents ZZ Top on their Raw Whiskey Tour. \n  \nZZ TOP a.k.a. “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas\,” lay undisputed claim to being the longest running major rock band with original personnel intact and\, in 2004\, the Texas trio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Of course\, there are only three of them – Billy F Gibbons\, Dusty Hill\, Frank Beard — but it’s still a remarkable achievement that they’re still very much together after almost 45 years of rock\, blues\, and boogie on the road and in the studio. “Yeah\,” says Billy\, guitarist extraordinaire\, “we’re the same three guys\, bashing out the same three chords.” With the release of each of their albums the band has explored new ground in terms of both their sonic approach and the material they’ve recorded. ZZ TOP is the same but always changing.

SUMMARY:Self-Portrait En La Cherry: In Conversation with Artist Narsiso Martinez
DESCRIPTION:As part of the exhibition “Inside/Outside\,” (on view until February 18) a survey of recent acquisitions\, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art is pleased to welcome back Narsiso Martinez for a public presentation. Martinez takes the produce boxes from grocery stores and paints portraits of the agricultural laborers many of whom are undocumented and subjected to terrible working conditions. These poignant images bring to the fore all the unseen labor that supports agribusiness and come from his experience as a worker in the fields up and down the West Coast. \n\nMary Craig Auditorium\n\n\n\nFree Students\n$5 SBMA Members\n$10 Non-Members

SUMMARY:Cultura Cura: 50 Years of Self Help Graphics in East LA: Reception and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:UCSB Library invites you to a public reception and panel discussion to celebrate the opening of Cultura Cura: 50 Years of Self Help Graphics in East LA\, a new exhibition featuring prints and ephemera from the Self Help Graphics & Art Collection in the Library’s California Ethnic & Multicultural Archives (CEMA). Self Help Graphics & Art is an LA-based organization that fosters the creation and advancement of new art works by Chicana/o and Latinx\, and other BIPOC artists artists through experimental and innovative printmaking techniques and other visual art forms. \n4:00–4:45 PM: Visitors are encouraged to arrive early to visit the Day of the Dead altar on display in the Library’s Ethnic & Gender Studies Collection (2nd Floor\, Ocean Side). Students from UCSB’s Las Maestras Center will be in the space to talk about the altar they created. \n5:00 PM: Reception and panel discussion in the Library’s Special Research Collections (3rd Floor\, Mountain Side) begins.\nModerator: Angel Diaz\, the Curator for CEMA and the Interim Directory of Special Research Collections at UCSB Library will moderate the panel discussion. \nLocation: UCSB Library- Special Research Collections \nPanelists:\nMarvella Muro is the Director of Artistic Programs and Education at Self Help Graphics (SHG) in Los Angeles. Prior to joining SHG\, she was the Community Engagement Manager at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, developing and executing art programs with community partners\, artists\, and social service groups in the neighborhoods of East Los Angeles\, Compton and North Hollywood. \nLinda Vallejo is an American artist known for painting\, sculpture and ceramics\, creating work that visualizes what it means to be a person of color in the United States. She states that these works reflect what she calls her “brown intellectual property”—the experiences\, knowledge\, and feelings gathered over more than four decades of study of Latino\, Chicano\, and American indigenous culture and communities. \nPhung Huynh is a Los Angeles-based artist and educator whose practice includes drawing\, painting\, public art\, and community engagement. Her work challenges beauty standards by constructing images of the Asian female body vis-à-vis plastic surgery to unpack how contemporary cosmetic surgery can whitewash cultural and racial identity. Her work of drawings and prints on pink donut boxes explores the complexities of assimilation and cultural negotiation among Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees who have resettled in the United States.

SUMMARY:The Redoubtable Disc Record – And Why the Format Refuses to Die
DESCRIPTION:Despite the way the Internet connects us with vast quantities of music\, 43% of all albums sold in the U.S. last year were vinyl LPS. Why is this? Why is it that\, today\, the disc record is the only physical audio format with increasing sales? \nA panel of industry and audio experts explores the 130- year history of the disc record and explains why – despite frequent predictions of its demise- the format’s popularity continues to grow. Intertwined with their presentations are demonstrations of period phonographs and recordings that reflect the changing musical tastes and technology since the disc first appeared in the 1890s. \nPanelists\nRichard Martin – Co-owner\, Producer\, Engineer\, Researcher/Writer\, Archeophone\, Records\nNick Bergh – Sound Restoration Expert and Found\, Endpoint Audio Labs\, Inc.\nPatrick Feaster – Sound Media Historian: Lead Researcher\, First Sounds Initiative \nModerator\nYuri Shimoda – Supervisor of Preservation Services\, Warner Bros. Discovery \nPresented by the UCSB Library as part of the Early Recordings Initiative (ERI). The ERI is focused on the acquisition\, conservation\, maintenance\, digitization\, and study of the earliest and rarest early sound recordings. These records are primarily brown way cylinders but also include other early formats. \nRegister for the In-Person Event\nRegister for the Virtual Event

SUMMARY:The Interior Sublime: Wilhelm Hammershøi and the Painting of Silence – Art Matters Lecture with Eik Kahng
DESCRIPTION:Eik Kahng\, Ph.D.\nChief Curator and Deputy Director\, SBMA \nIn the last thirty years\, the Danish painter Wilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916) has regained the critical recognition that he enjoyed during his lifetime as “the Danish Vermeer.” His route to the uncanny and the sublime was unique\, in that he chose to focus on domestic interiors\, typically populated by a lone figure\, often seen from behind\, and in his most memorable compositions\, entirely empty. This lecture will seek to locate his art in the European tradition\, while describing his unique strategies towards a kind of interior sublime accessed through mundane experience of everyday life. \nMary Craig Auditorium \nFree Students | Museum Circle\n$10 SBMA Members\n$15 Non-Members

SUMMARY:John Stearns and His Wharf: A Sesquicentennial Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 16 · 5:30 – 7pm \nJoin historian Neal Graffy to learn the full story behind John Peck Stearns and his deepwater wharf. \nIt was Monday\, September 16\, 1872\, was when the first ship tied up at John Peck Stearns’ new wharf at the foot of State Street. Prior to this date\, ships had to pause a mile or more off shore while cargo and passengers were transferred to small boats and rowed ashore and back. It was a time-consuming\, expensive and miserable experience. But no more! Stearns had built more than a wharf\, this was the door that would open Santa Barbara to the world. For 150 years Stearns Wharf has endured storms\, fires\, earthquakes\, changing times and the threat of bombing by the most dastardly of villains. A true survivor\, it has overcome all that nature and man has thrown at it. \nRESERVATION REQUIRED \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/john-stearns-and-his-wharf-a-sesquicentennial-celebration-thursday-tickets-752082949347?aff=oddtdtcreator \nTo be alerted about a future talk\, email membership@sbhistorical.org. \nSanta Barbara Historical Museum \n136 East de la Guerra Santa Barbara\, CA 93101 \n805-966-1601 \nreception@sbhistorical.org \nhttps://www.sbhistorical.org/

SUMMARY:Edo Pop: Woodblock Prints and Popular Culture in Premodern Japan
DESCRIPTION:Art Matters Lecture with Matthew Welch\, Deputy Director and Chief Curator\, Minneapolis Institute of Art. \nWith their crisp outlines\, unmodulated colors\, and surprising vantage points\, Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e) from the 18th and 19th centuries seem as fresh and captivating today as when they were produced. Sensuality\, fashion\, decadent entertainments and urban pastimes all reflect the popular tastes of young sophisticates in the premodern era. Matthew Welch\, Deputy Director and Chief Curator at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts will provide an overview of the social milieu of Japan’s “floating world\,” and the artists who immortalized it through their prints. He will also discuss several contemporary artists whose works reference the ukiyo-e tradition. \n\nMary Craig Auditorium\n\n\n\nFree Students | Museum Circle\n$10 SBMA Members\n$15 Non-Members
