SUMMARY:The Power to Be: A Lecture by Anthony Sonnenberg
DESCRIPTION:Artist Anthony Sonnenberg will explore expressions of power through decoration within various cultures. Opposing a denigrative association with the merely frivolous\, decoration throughout history has performed a meaningful task of constructing and emanating power. Personal\, social\, and political power dynamics are expressed through decorative decadence and excess\, be it\, the over-embellished palace\, the ecstatic candelabra\, or the glamorous dress. \nThe artist’s work will be featured in the SBMA exhibition WARES! Extraordinary Ceramics and the Ordinary Home from June 18 through September 17\, 2023. \nMary Craig Auditorium \nFree SBMA Members\, Students\, and UCSB Faculty\n$5 Non-Members

SUMMARY:Digital Handcraft - Gallery Opening at Clay Studio
DESCRIPTION:Digital Handcraft is an educational exhibition that will introduce visitors to the world of 3D printing. The show features a variety of examples that demonstrate key concepts and principles within digital fabrication to illustrate the versatility and potential of 3D printing technology available to ceramic artists today. \nVisitors will witness the intricate processes involved when creating pieces using robotics and gain a deeper understanding of the techniques and materials utilized by contemporary makers.  While the objects and videos on display will be aesthetically pleasing and interesting by their own right\, the primary goal of the exhibition is to guide visitors through different digital workflow processes to gain insight into the ways in which this technology can be applied to different concepts. \nThe exhibit will include 3D prints in a variety of stages\, including renderings\, prototypes\, models\, and final prints. Concepts and techniques will be demonstrated and explained using video\, QR codes and web links. Looped videos will feature time lapse recordings of forms being rendered on printers\, as well as testimonials by worldclass makers discussing their process and views on digital fabrication in the arts & crafts. \nKey concepts\, such as modeling techniques\, modeling software options\, printer types\, printing techniques\, and different clay bodies and glazing methods will be available to help familiarize viewers with the ever-expanding ecosystem of digital fabrication. Vocabulary will be introduced and explained\, including but not limited to modeling terms\, printing terms\, slicing terms\, and post processing treatments.  The exhibition will inspire visitors to appreciate the craft that goes into 3D printing\, and to better understand what is possible with this new medium. \nOrganized by Lynda Weinman and Joey Watson\, Digital Handcraft will be on display at the Clay Studio of Santa Barbara from September 14th to November 14th\, 2023.  Opening reception is scheduled for September 14th from 5-7pm.

SUMMARY:Corners of the Earth - Kamchatka
DESCRIPTION:Special Q&A with the filmmakers following the movie. \nFollow filmmakers Spencer Frost and Guy Williment and surfers Letty Mortenson and Fraser Dovell as they journey to Kamchatka in the far east of Russia in search of new waves along the frozen\, unexplored coastline.  \nBordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk with more than 150 volcanoes (29 active) the Kamchatka Peninsula in Far Eastern Russia is as remote as it is unique.  \nAfter two years of planning the trip was almost over before it started. \nAn hour before boarding their flight to Moscow\, Russia invaded Ukraine. \nAt a time when the world was seeing the worst of human nature\, these guys flew behind the iron curtain and found\, to their surprise the best of it. Mi-8 helicopters\, skidoos\, frozen campsites\, and frozen bank accounts\, this surf trip quickly became far more than anyone could imagine.

DESCRIPTION:Art Matters Lecture with Joyce Tsai\nDirector\, Clyfford Still Museum \nThe American Abstract Expressionist artist\, Clyfford Still\, held on to 93% of everything he ever made and willed this extraordinary corpus\, not to an existing art museum or gallery\, to an unnamed American city. In so doing\, he invests his art with civic potential. Joyce Tsai\, director of the Clyfford Still Museum will illuminate the ways her institution seeks to fulfill that ambition. \nGenerous support for Art Matters is provided by the SBMA Women’s Board. \nFree Students | Museum Circle\n$10 SBMA Members\n$15 Non-Members

SUMMARY:A Fabulous Failure: The Clinton Presidency\, the Transformation of American Capitalism\, and American Labor Today
DESCRIPTION:UCSB Library is pleased to present Nelson Lichtenstein in the Pacific Views: Library Speaker Series for Fall 2023. Lichtenstein will speak about his new book A Fabulous Failure: The Clinton Presidency and the Transformation of American Capitalism\, published September 12\, 2023\, by Princeton University Press. \nChaucer’s Books will sell copies of the book before and after Lichtenstein’s talk. \nWhen Bill Clinton was elected president in 1992\, he ended 12 years of Republican rule and seemed poised to enact a progressive transformation of the American economy\, touching everything from health care to trade to labor relations. Yet by the time he left office\, the nation’s economic and social policies had instead lurched dramatically rightward\, exacerbating the inequalities so troubling in our own time. In his talk\, Lichtenstein reveals why Clinton’s expansive agenda was a fabulous failure\, and why its demise still haunts us today. \nNelson Lichtenstein is Research Professor at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. An historian of labor\, business and politics\, he is the author or editor of 19 books\, including State of the Union: A Century of American Labor; The Retail Revolution: How Wal-Mart Created a Brave New World of Business; a biography of the labor leader Walter Reuther\, and most recently\, A Fabulous Failure: The Clinton Presidency and the Transformation of American Capitalism. He co-edited Beyond the New Deal Order: From the Great Depression to the Great Recession and a companion volume\, Capitalism Contested: the New Deal and Its Legacies. Lichtenstein writes opinion pieces for The New York Times\, The Los Angeles Times\, The Washington Post\, Dissent\, Jacobin\, and The American Prospect. \nThis event may be photographed or recorded.

SUMMARY:Santa Rosa Island: A Photographic Panorama
DESCRIPTION:Grab a glass and join us for this presentation in your living room by author Charles Healey about his book illustrating Santa Rosa Island. \nAt 84 square miles\, Santa Rosa Island is the second largest of the eight Channel Islands. Established as a safe location to raise cattle away from the mainland\, over 150 years of ranching led to a unique balance between 7\,000 head of cattle\, ranchers\, horses\, and transport ships\, as well as a small military base during World War II. \nHealey\, a direct descendant of the island’s last ranching family\, presents a visual historical account of the island’s cattle ranching era through his family’s private photograph collections. Channel Island foxes\, elephant seals\, and sea anemones are interspersed with ranch houses\, cowboys\, and empty beaches\, all combined in this unique look at a piece of our region’s history. \n  \nVirtual Event\nTuesday\, October 10 @ 5:00pm\nZoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_PjvNb8fSQk-X36HxSlal1w#/registration \n

SUMMARY:“Depth of Field” Exhibit at SB Botanic Garden Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Though originally taken for scientific purposes\, the images of California native plants in a new exhibit at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden’s Gallery were photographed using a specialized technique that created dramatic portraits against a black background. “Depth of Field: Botanical Photography Through the Low-key Lens” features images taken over a period of fifty years by eight photographers using the “low-key” technique to document species in the field. \n“Depth of Field” is on view in the Garden’s Pritzlaff Conservation Center Gallery daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through December 9\, 2023\, and is free with Garden admission. Reservations to visit the Garden are required and can be made by visiting www.sbbotanicgarden.org/visit/hours-reservations. \nThe 41 giclee prints in the show were made from previously digitized color slides that were chosen from among thousands stored in the Garden’s archives. The photos were taken in the field during broad daylight\, but appear to be night or studio images. They span 1947 to 2000 and feature works taken by eight individuals associated with the Garden\, including staff\, board members\, and volunteers. \nIn the “low-key” technique\, an underexposed photo is combined with a bright light\, in this case a flash\, to illuminate the close-up plant while the background remains dark. The technique is still used by photographers today\, but digital cameras and sophisticated photo apps have generally replaced slide film and traditional photo developing methods. \nAdvance reservations for Garden admission are required for non-members and recommended for Garden members. Each reservation ensures entry and includes parking for one vehicle. Carpooling is advised. Garden hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the last reservation at 4 p.m. Reservations are available by specific date and time at www.sbbotanicgarden.org/visit/hours-reservations. \nPhotographers featured in the show include: \nLyda Edge – an amateur botanist and Garden volunteer from 1969 to 1979 \nJ. R. “Bob” Haller\, Ph.D. (1930–2016) – retired UCSB professor who was an education botanist at the Garden for 22 years (Dieter Wilken and Steve Junak were Haller’s students at UCSB) \nSteve Junak – botanical instructor and later the curator of the Clifton Smith Herbarium who retired after 37 years at the Garden; currently botanist emeritus and a research associate \nReid Moran\, Ph.D. (1916–2010) – began his career at the Garden in 1947 as a staff botanist and later served as the curator of botany at the San Diego Natural History Museum \nDonald Myrick (1893–1972) – served on Garden’s Board of Trustees from 1956 to 1972 \nBetty Randall Potts – wildlife photographer and Garden member in the 1990s \nDieter H. Wilken\, Ph.D. – retired as director of research and conservation in 2013 after 20 years at the Garden; currently a research associate in the Garden’s Clifton Smith Herbarium \nDorothy King Young (1904–1999) – well-known wildflower enthusiast\, author (“Redwood Empire Wildflowers”)\, and founding member of the California Native Plant Society

SUMMARY:Flowers on a River: Bada Shanren’s Lotusland
DESCRIPTION:UCLA professor of Art History Hui-shu Lee provides a deep and contextualized reading of the centerpiece of the exhibition—Bada Shanren’s Flowers on a River of 1697—a symphonic landscape of lotus and attached poetic ballad that unfurls in a scroll over 42 feet in length. Flowers on a River counts as one of the most important works by the secretive Bada\, thoughtfully worked out over a period of months in his late years. Not only is the scroll’s primary subject of lotus and landscape among the most personal and enduring for Bada\, the melodic verses written in his distinctive calligraphy prove equally significant. Cryptic and densely layered with allusions to past and present\, Bada’s ballad reminiscences on a personal history defined by sorrow and alienation that simmers just under the painting’s visual appeal. \n\nMary Craig Auditorium\n\n\n\nFree Students | SBMA Members\n$5 Non-Members

SUMMARY:ZZ Top
DESCRIPTION:Goldenvoice presents ZZ Top on their Raw Whiskey Tour. \n  \nZZ TOP a.k.a. “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas\,” lay undisputed claim to being the longest running major rock band with original personnel intact and\, in 2004\, the Texas trio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Of course\, there are only three of them – Billy F Gibbons\, Dusty Hill\, Frank Beard — but it’s still a remarkable achievement that they’re still very much together after almost 45 years of rock\, blues\, and boogie on the road and in the studio. “Yeah\,” says Billy\, guitarist extraordinaire\, “we’re the same three guys\, bashing out the same three chords.” With the release of each of their albums the band has explored new ground in terms of both their sonic approach and the material they’ve recorded. ZZ TOP is the same but always changing.

Locally\, Abboud served as a guest artist at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History in 2006 and 2007 and has created Santa Barbara County commissions that include the 2014 Granada Theatre 90th anniversary celebration poster\, five paintings for the landmark collection at Cottage Hospital\, and many more. \nFor more information\, visit: https://wildlingmuseum.org/news/2023-visions-of-beauty. \nImage: Mara Abboud\, “Iris\,” 2023\, Original painting on silk.
