SUMMARY:Reading and Conversation - "Blue Skies" by T.C. Boyle
DESCRIPTION:Returning to the Museum in what has become a much-anticipated and highly animated annual event\, T.C. Boyle\, Santa Barbara’s prolific and perennial favorite\, reads from his latest novel\, Blue Skies. \nCalled by fellow author Annie Proulx\, “Brilliantly imaginative…in a terrifying way\,” Blue Skies follows in the tradition of Boyle’s finest novels\, combining high-octane plotting with mordant wit and shrewd social commentary. Described as “an eco-thriller with teeth\,” this tragicomic and prescient novel captures the absurdity and “inexpressible sadness at the heart of everything.” When once rare epic natural disasters happen every week what is left to do but drink? \nBook signing to follow. \n\nMary Craig Auditorium\n\n\n\n$5 SBMA Members\n$10 Non-Members

SUMMARY:The Artist’s Intent and the Paradox of Art Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Art Matters Lecture with Bart Devolder\nChief Conservator\, Princeton University Art Museum \nBart Devolder will discuss the role a conservator plays in the life of an artwork. SUMMARY:Clarence Mattei - Portrait of a Community: A talk by Erin Graffy about the artist
DESCRIPTION:Clarence Mattei – Portrait of a Community: A talk by Erin Graffy about the artist \nFor over forty years Clarence R. Mattei captured in pen and pencil\, charcoal\, and oil the portraits of notable figures on the local\, national\, and international stage. The artist had roots which went deep into the historical soil of Santa Barbara County. In 1886\, his father\, Felix Mattei\, founded Mattei’s Tavern\, in Los Olivos when the stagecoach was still the primary means of overland travel. Here Clarence grew up with his four brothers. \nAlthough Mattei moved comfortably in the sophisticated salons of Paris and in the drawing rooms of the privileged in New York City the pull of his rustic childhood home remained strong\, and he eventually returned to Santa Barbara. Here he became a key figure in the city’s burgeoning art colony. Erin Graffy draws her own portrait of this talented artist\, by utilizing private archives and interviews with family and friends. \nAbout the Speaker: Erin Graffy de Garcia is the author of a number of books and articles on the history and culture of the Santa Barbara area. \n—- \nWednesday\, September 13 \n5:30 – 7:00pm PDT \nSanta Barbara Historical Museum \n136 East de la Guerra St\, Santa Barbara\, CA 93101 \n  \nSBHM Members $10 \nNonmembers $15 \nStudents FREE \nEventbrite link to purchase tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/clarence-mattei-portrait-of-a-community-tickets-701039246257?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:The Power to Be: A Lecture by Anthony Sonnenberg
DESCRIPTION:Artist Anthony Sonnenberg will explore expressions of power through decoration within various cultures. Opposing a denigrative association with the merely frivolous\, decoration throughout history has performed a meaningful task of constructing and emanating power. Personal\, social\, and political power dynamics are expressed through decorative decadence and excess\, be it\, the over-embellished palace\, the ecstatic candelabra\, or the glamorous dress. \nThe artist’s work will be featured in the SBMA exhibition WARES! SUMMARY:Digital Handcraft - Gallery Opening at Clay Studio
DESCRIPTION:Digital Handcraft is an educational exhibition that will introduce visitors to the world of 3D printing. The show features a variety of examples that demonstrate key concepts and principles within digital fabrication to illustrate the versatility and potential of 3D printing technology available to ceramic artists today. \nVisitors will witness the intricate processes involved when creating pieces using robotics and gain a deeper understanding of the techniques and materials utilized by contemporary makers.  While the objects and videos on display will be aesthetically pleasing and interesting by their own right\, the primary goal of the exhibition is to guide visitors through different digital workflow processes to gain insight into the ways in which this technology can be applied to different concepts. \nThe exhibit will include 3D prints in a variety of stages\, including renderings\, prototypes\, models\, and final prints. Concepts and techniques will be demonstrated and explained using video\, QR codes and web links. Looped videos will feature time lapse recordings of forms being rendered on printers\, as well as testimonials by worldclass makers discussing their process and views on digital fabrication in the arts & crafts. \nKey concepts\, such as modeling techniques\, modeling software options\, printer types\, printing techniques\, and different clay bodies and glazing methods will be available to help familiarize viewers with the ever-expanding ecosystem of digital fabrication. Vocabulary will be introduced and explained\, including but not limited to modeling terms\, printing terms\, slicing terms\, and post processing treatments.  The exhibition will inspire visitors to appreciate the craft that goes into 3D printing\, and to better understand what is possible with this new medium. \nOrganized by Lynda Weinman and Joey Watson\, Digital Handcraft will be on display at the Clay Studio of Santa Barbara from September 14th to November 14th\, 2023.  Opening reception is scheduled for September 14th from 5-7pm.
