SUMMARY:Capturing and Recapturing A Day in the Life of Martin Luther King\, Jr. Photographs by esteemed photojournalist Santi Visalli
DESCRIPTION:In honor of the MLK Federal Holiday and Black History Month photojournalist Santi Visalli has quite a story to tell that is sure to resonate with the public today.  He was the photographer hired to document an event with Dr. King back on April 15\, 1967. The assignment was from an Italian magazine\, based in Milan\, now long out of print\, which only used two photos out of ten rolls of film he shot. The negatives were considered lost…until three years ago. All shot in black & white\, the event was a 1967 Vietnam War Protest in New York City outside the U.N. and there are poignant images of the nearly 125\,000 people at the march\, along with Dr. King addressing the crowd. Visalli hopes the photos will inform current generations about MLK’s advocacy for peace in addition to his lifelong pursuit for Civil Rights.   \nSPECIAL NOTE:  The exhibit will be available to schools and community organizations that may wish to visit the exhibit as an educational opportunity about the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.  Contact Helene Schneider\, curator to make any arrangements for group visits. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these photos in such an intimate space.  To see more of Santi’s work\, his website is: https://www.thefinestphotos.com/ \n  \nDonate to keep MLK’s legacy alive and help underwrite the events and programs of the MLKSB Committee.  https://mlksb.org/donate/ \n  \nThe Community Arts Workshop is space for artistic endeavors and exploration—a “blank canvas” for artists\, thinkers\, innovators\, and creators to develop ideas\, make connections\, and build community. \nThe mission of the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Committee of Santa Barbara is to foster positive relationships between many diverse groups in the Santa Barbara community and the surrounding areas; to sponsor programs and events which exemplify the teachings of Dr. King; and to observe\, and celebrate the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Holiday.       \nwww.sbcaw.org \nwww.MLKSB.org

SUMMARY:On a Mission: A talk by Janet Sands
DESCRIPTION:Author Janet Dowling Sands returns to present new insights and little-known episodes of history from the just-published 2nd edition of her popular book On a Mission: The Real Story of the California Missions. \nThe California missions are beloved historical sites\, but they tell a far more interesting and important story than one might imagine—one that is linked to global history\, geopolitics\, and to the founding of the country. \nPart big-picture\, carefully researched historical narrative and part travel guide the book is a beautifully illustrated volume that begins with the prehistory of California’s native peoples and describes the global context of the Spanish missions while examining their impact and legacy for modern California. Ms. Sands raises important questions about how we should think about the mission era and the missions themselves\, and presents the missions as they appear today\, highlighting their architectural styles and rare works of art. \nWednesday\, January 31 · 5:30 – 7pm PST\nSanta Barbara Historical Museum\n136 East de la Guerra Santa Barbara\, CA 93101\nGet tickets here

SUMMARY:The Many Colors of Afro Asia
DESCRIPTION:Art Matters Lecture with Joan Kee\, Professor of Art History\, University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor \nHow might we think about art and its histories from the perspective of a “global majority”? Spanning North America\, Europe\, Asia\, and Africa\, Joan Kee looks at the relationships that formed between Black and Asian artists at critical historical junctures—including the formation of international communities in the 1940s civil rights struggles in the United States\, patterns of migration in and around the Pacific in the 1950s and 60s and intensified Chinese investment in Africa after 2000. Through geometry\, a language of magnitudes and alignments\, the idea of an “Afro Asia” opens up new ways of seeing how artworks shape our cultural\, social\, and political lives. \nMary Craig Auditorium\nFree Students | Museum Circle\n$10 SBMA Members\n$15 Non-Members

SUMMARY:Miss Chase: Santa Barbara’s Trailblazer
DESCRIPTION:Join Simon Kerry for a presentation on his new publication\, Miss Chase: Santa Barbara’s Trailblazer\, chronicling the life\, prescience\, importance and legacy of Pearl Chase and her work in Santa Barbara and beyond. \nPearl Chase’s strength of personality\, maturity\, intelligence and leadership qualities formed the bedrock that enabled her to look outwards and achieve so much in her lifetime. \nIn his book\, Kerry traces Chase’s early life and collegiate years at UC Berkeley through to her return to Santa Barbara and indelible impact on both California and the nation. During a tumultuous period in American history in the early twentieth century\, she paved a way for not only the environmentalist movement but also for women’s influence in politics in the federal and local civic spheres. Her compassionate\, charitable nature extended to many cultural groups and causes\, evident in her vocal support of protecting the lands and customs of Native Americans in the southwest. \nThe talk asks the questions: What can we learn from Pearl\, her pioneering activities and the causes to which she tirelessly devoted herself? What is the enduring legacy of this remarkable woman? \nWednesday\, February 7 · 5:30 – 7pm PST\nSanta Barbara Historical Museum\n136 East de la Guerra Santa Barbara\, CA 93101\nGet tickets here

SUMMARY:The Birds and the Bees and More: Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:The California Nature Art Museum is excited to bring the important topic of pollinators to its gallery featuring original art by Ava Roth\, Elizabeth Weber\, Susan McDonnell\, and Cynthia James. The exhibition will be available to the public from March 2\, 2024\, through September 2\, 2024. \nEach artist brings a unique perspective to their pollinating subjects. For instance\, artist Ava Roth works with honeybees to produce artworks using bee-created honeycombs. Susan Mcdonnell is producing new paintings showcasing lesser-known pollinators such as bats and butterflies. Elizabeth Weber’s photos spotlight dwindling monarch butterfly populations\, aiming to encourage the planting of native species. And finally\, Cynthia James is creating art that reflects the risks faced by pollinators like bees due to pesticides.  \nWe are delighted to also be collaborating with the Cheadle Center For Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration at UC Santa Barbara. The Cheadle Center’s contribution is focused on native bees\, including high-resolution images of rare\, local bees from the UCSB Natural History Collection and images of bees visiting flowers of native plants for an up-close look at their beauty and biodiversity. Cheadle Center Director\, Katja Seltmann\, a bee biologist\, will present a performative discussion and Q&A about bee natural history that includes bees for viewing under the microscope and music. Additional programming will be announced soon.

SUMMARY:Artemisia Gentileschi: New Understandings
DESCRIPTION:Art Matters Lecture with Judith Mann \nOver the last 75 years\, Artemisia Gentileschi has developed into an icon of female empowerment and the emotive drama of baroque painting. Identified with images of Judith decapitating the general Holofernes\, she has come to be understood as a woman who succeeded in a man’s world\, overcoming considerable obstacles to do so. While not entirely inaccurate\, such an understanding fails to address the reality of the artist’s life in 17th-century Italian society\, and has caused her less dramatic paintings to remain misunderstood or overlooked. Dr. Mann will discuss seven of the artists’ paintings\, including well-known titles such as Susanna and the Elders along with a series of works that have come to light within the last 20 years. Her talk will provide a richer and more nuanced version of the painter than has generally been offered in exhibitions and recent publications.

SUMMARY:Lecture: “Attracting Pollinators to the California Native Landscape; An Introduction to Pollination Ecology” with Richard Merrill
DESCRIPTION:While the topic of pollination in Santa Barbara County is both engrossing and essential\, few are familiar with the actual processes of the phenomenon and the major pollinators behind it: bees\, of course\, but also hummingbirds\, butterflies\, moths\, and beneficial insects. \nRichard Merrill received his Masters Degree in Population Biology from UCLA\, and investigated the biodynamics of ecosystems in a PhD program at UCSB. During his time at UCSB\, Merrill’s imagination was captured by the idea to design landscapes that would attract\, nurture\, and provide shelter for local wildlife – pollinators and beneficial insects\, in particular. He then founded and became Chairman of the Dept. of Environmental Horticulture at Cabrillo Community College\, and has worked on this project for over 40 years now. Currently\, Merrill serves as a volunteer consultant to the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and runs a small horticultural consulting business. \nJoin us for an inspirational and educational lecture with Richard Merrill at the California Nature Art Museum (formerly the Wildling Museum) in the First Floor Wildling Gallery. \nAttendees will learn how the different colors\, shapes\, and sizes of flowers attract their specific pollinators\, enjoy a presentation of garden-worthy California native plants that are especially effective at attracting pollinators\, and discover the importance of home gardens in establishing local “islands” of native biodiversity. Guests will leave with the tools necessary to create or enhance their own native pollination landscapes! \n\nTickets are $5 for members\, and $10 for non-members. \nTickets can be purchased here: \nhttps://crm.bloomerang.co/HostedDonation?ApiKey=pub_151c3146-9973-11e7-afbe-024e165d44b3&WidgetId=418713600 \nFor more information\, contact Rachel Metz at rachel@calnatureartmuseum.org

SUMMARY:The (Mad) Hatter Reception
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Spring\, Women’s History Month and the recently curated exhibit “The (Mad) Hatter\,” Flying Goat is hosting a reception on Friday\, March 29\, 4-6pm at the Tasting Room & Art Salon. With over fifty hats collected over fifty years\, Chief Philosopher/Proprietor Kate Griffith has been nicknamed “The Mad Hatter” by her husband (and Winemaker) Norm Yost. Ladies and gents are invited to put on their favorite chapeau\, channel their alter-ego and join in the fun. Easter bonnets are especially welcome! \n“Swept up with all the possibilities of who I could be (or pretend to be) with the change of a hat\, I began collecting all styles of headgear in my late teens\,” remarked Griffith. “Almost fifty years and over fifty hats later\, my collection includes functional to classical to whimsical styles. They all give me great delight. My husband admits that this is a side of me he didn’t even know existed. I’ve been storing most of my hats in vintage trunks\, including a Victorian hat trunk from my great grandmother.” \nGriffith doffs a hat to Women’s History Month and the many ladies of inspiration\, such as feminist icon Bella Abzug\, who have had empowerment through their colorful\, flamboyant or unique hats. These leaders and other less known women are also celebrated for wearing “many hats” in their professional and personal lives. \n“The (Mad) Hatter” collection includes diversity in expression\, from a coy fascinator to French beret to cloche hat. Griffith playfully displays the hats with a dozen themes\, such as “Day at the Races\,” “Out of Africa” and “Tea Time.” Dare you venture into the Tasting Room and go down the rabbit hole of Griffith’s imagination? You may even find Alice or a frisky March Hare. \nFlying Goat Cellars is known for age worthy fine Pinot Noir and sparkling wine without pretense. The Tasting Room\, located at 1520 East Chestnut Court in Lompoc\, is open Thursday-Monday 11am-4pm. Rotating art exhibits are hosted throughout the year at Flying Goat. SUMMARY:An Evening With The Kingston Trio
DESCRIPTION:Iconic group to appear at The Lobero Theatre \nONE NIGHT ONLY \nApril 9\, 7 P.M. \n \nNashville\, Tenn. (February 26\, 2024)–Nearly seven decades since they emerged from San Francisco’s North Beach club scene to introduce the sounds of folk music into the mainstream and take the world by storm\, The Kingston Trio return to their native California for their 2024 “Keep The Music Playing” national tour. \nCredited for sparking the “American Folk Revival” or folk movement of the late 50s and early 60s with their commercial success (which at one point accounted for approximately 15% of Capitol records sales)\, and known for hits such as “Tom Dooley\,” “M.T.A. (The Man Who Never Returned)\,” and “Where Have All The Flowers Gone\,” The Kingston Trio will appear for ONE NIGHT ONLY on Tuesday\, April 9 at The Lobero Theatre (33 E. Canon Perdido St.) in Santa Barbara. Tickets start at $26 for students and range from $51 – $76 for the general public (plus fees) and are available via loberotheatre.com\, by calling (805) 963-0761 or 1-888-4LOBERO (1-888-456-2376)\, or at the box office. Showtime is 7 P.M. \nFormed in 1956 by Bob Shane\, Nick Reynolds\, and Dave Guard (replaced by John Stewart at the height of the group’s popularity in 1961)\, The Kingston Trio is one of the longest-operating bands touring today. Though the group has undergone multiple personnel changes and its founding members have since passed away\, the music of The Kingston Trio lives on with the passing of the torch to three new members with intrinsic ties to the original: Mike Marvin (adopted son of founding member Reynolds)\, Tim Gorelangton (friend of Reynolds since boyhood and one of the few to record with him)\, and Buddy Woodward (who toured with the Trio). All three personally remember the iconic trio’s performances as folk music made its extraordinary ascent to the pinnacle of popular culture at the top of the music charts–perhaps part of the reason its newest members sound so much like the original Trio. \nCited as an influence by recording artists as musically and generationally diverse as Bob Dylan\, Crosby\, Stills & Nash\, and The Eagles\, to comedian and banjo player Steve Martin\, to contemporary artists such as the multi-Grammy® nominated Mumford & Sons and The Avett Brothers\, The Kingston Trio occupies a unique\, preeminent position in American musical history. \n“I am proud to continue The Kingston Trio tradition and to share the music Nick\, Dave\, Bob\, and John performed and getting audiences everywhere up and singing with us\,” noted Mike Marvin\, adding\, “It’s all the more gratifying to perform this music for all the fans and to ‘Keep the Music Playing.” \nFor more information on The Kingston Trio ‘Keep The Music Playing’ Tour and tickets\, please visit www.kingstontrio. \nABOUT THE KINGSTON TRIO: \nThe Kingston Trio was one of the most prominent groups of the era’s pop-folk boom that started in 1958 with the release of their first album and its hit recording of “Tom Dooley”\, which sold over three million copies as a single and was awarded the very first Grammy in the Country & Western Performance category in 1959. \nThe Trio released 19 albums that made Billboard’s Top 100\, 14 of which ranked in the top 10\, and five of which hit the number one spot. Four of the group’s LPs charted among the 10 top-selling albums for five weeks in November and December 1959\, a record unmatched for more than 50 years\, and the group still ranks in the all-time lists of many of Billboard’s cumulative charts\, including those for most weeks with a number one album\, most total weeks charting an album\, most number one albums\, most consecutive number one albums\, and most top-ten albums. For more information\, visit www.kingstontrio.com.

SUMMARY:Lecture and Book Signing: "California's Changing Landscape: The Way of Water" by George Rose
DESCRIPTION:Over 140 stunning photographs capture George Rose’s expansive documentation of California’s complicated and dramatic water story. George began this project during the Covid-19 pandemic\, just as the effects of drought were becoming increasingly visible. Then\, California was hit with record-setting rain and snowstorms in early 2023. This onslaught of water effectively filled reservoirs and – at least temporarily – ended the drought. \n  \n“I have always been curious about how we acquire our drinking water\,” says author and photographer George Rose. “I made the decision to educate myself about California’s convoluted water systems and set out to photograph as many of the important and not-so-important state water reservoirs as possible. As I looked back\, I realized I was witnessing a changing climate and landscape which was evolving before my eyes.” \nRose\, a contributing photographer with Getty Images\, lives in Santa Barbara County’s Santa Ynez Valley. Much of his time is devoted to documenting the natural environment as well as top vineyard estates up and down the coast of California. \nOver 50 years ago\, Rose began his long career as a photographer. He served six years as a staff photographer for the Los Angeles Times; prowled the sidelines of games as a photographer for the National Football League (NFL); co-owned and co-published the Mendocino Grapevine; won a World Press Photo Award for news\, and was named California “Newspaper Photographer of the Year” in 1976 by the University of Missouri; the Los Angeles Times has twice nominated him for a Pulitzer Prize; and in addition to California’s Changing Landscapes\, has released other coffee table style books such as VINEYARD Sonoma County (2017) and WINE COUNTRY Santa Barbara County (2019). \n  \nJoin us for an inspirational and educational lecture and book signing with George Rose at the California Nature Art Museum (formerly the Wildling Museum) in the Second Floor Valley Oak Gallery. His newest book\, California’s Changing Landscape\, will be sold onsite for $38.98. \nTickets are $5 for members\, and $10 for non-members. SUMMARY:Beth Gates Warren on Julien Levy: Maestro of the Art World
DESCRIPTION:Noted photography scholar Beth Gates Warren will present a fascinating lecture on Julien Levy (1906–81)\, who is best remembered today as the art dealer who brought Surrealism to the United States. His eponymous New York City Gallery (1931–49) was generally regarded as the best place to view cutting-edge work by such artists as Salvador Dalí\, Max Ernst\, Alberto Giacometti\, Arshile Gorky\, Frida Kahlo and Man Ray. A monumental just-published four-volume set of books presents an uncensored insider’s view of Levy\, the artists he exhibited\, and the influence he wielded during the 1930s and ’40s. SUMMARY:Native Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Native Plant Appreciation Month with native plants\, coffee\, and used books. Enjoy a large variety of native plants for sale from Yes Yes Nursery and Manzanita Nursery\, be inspired by educational materials from Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden\, cozy-up to a cup of coffee (and a bag of compost!) from Considered Coffee Co.\, peruse a selection of used books benefitting Museum education\, and get creative with a free planter-painting activity. \nNative plants are vitally important to the biodiversity\, beauty\, and stability that make Santa Barbara County the ecologically rich place that it is. Healthy native plant populations are generally more self-sustaining and drought-resistant than non-native plants (and can therefore help in conserving water)\, and support the native pollinators and animals that rely on them for survival. \nFrom 11AM-1PM\, enjoy a free guided planter-painting activity. Bring your own planter or recycled container (pickle\, peanut butter\, or mason jars work great for this!)\, or take one of ours (while supplies last)\, and decorate a home for native plant seeds or seedlings! \nYes Yes Nursery will also be offering a free sunflower seed packing activity for children at their booth in the back parking lot\, with sunflower seeds\, soil\, and container included. \nIn addition to their usual incredible coffee\, Considered Coffee Co. will be selling compost from their closed-loop system and partnership with Isla Vista Coffee Collective (IVCC). Considered Coffee Co. donates their coffee grounds to IVCC for composting\, and then later receives some back as composted soil to sell to the public. \nRegular admission prices will apply. Please see our admission prices below: \nMuseum Members: FREE\nGeneral (18 years +): $5.00\nChildren (17 & younger): FREE\nActive Military with ID: FREE                                                                                                                                                                            Museums for All with ID: FREE \nFor more information\, contact Rachel Metz at rachel@calnatureartmuseum.org. \nWhile at the Museum for the Native Plant Sale\, visit our current exhibition\, The Birds and the Bees and More: Pollinators . \nThe Birds and the Bees and More: Pollinators brings the important topic of pollinators to our California Nature Art Museum gallery featuring original art by Ava Roth\, Elizabeth Weber\, Susan McDonnell\, and Cynthia James. Each artist brings a unique perspective to their pollinating subjects.
