SUMMARY:READING FOR OUR LIVES A Literacy Action Plan from Birth to Six by Maya Payne Smart
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we dive into Reading for Our Lives\, A Literacy Action Plan from Birth to Six.\nThe author\, Maya Payne Smart\, will be in attendance\, presenting and signing books. \nThis is a free event designed to educate parents and children on the importance of reading at an early age. \nTaco truck from 5pm – 6pm\nFree childcare for ages 4-12 from 6:30pm – 8:30pm (Registration required) \nIn READING FOR OUR LIVES\, A Literacy Action Plan from Birth to Six\, writer\, educator\, and literacy advocate Maya Payne Smart challenges the bath-book-bed mantra and the idea that reading aloud to our kids is enough to ensure school readiness—a myth Smart believed until her daughter started school and Smart found her reading progress lacking. Smart realized that our current approach to literacy offers too little\, too late.  \nREADING FOR OUR LIVES is a timely\, necessary tool as U.S. literacy hits critical levels. Currently\, there are 43 million Americans between ages 16 to 65 who can’t read well enough to complete a job application\, follow a bus schedule\, understand a rental agreement or parse choices at the ballot box. Low-income kids and children of color suffer the most. READING FOR OUR LIVES offers parents from all walks a life hope and a lifeline. Smart encourages and motivates caregivers to use whatever they have of their most valuable resource – time – to set their children on the road for success. \nMaya Payne Smart is a writer\, parent educator\, and literacy advocate who has served on the boards of numerous library and literacy organizations. She and her family live in Milwaukee\, where she serves as affiliated faculty in educational policy and leadership in the College of Education at Marquette University. Her website\, MayaSmart.com\, provides tips and tools for parents to nurture\, teach\, and advocate for kids on the road to reading. \n“READING FOR OUR LIVES is the book to turn to when nurturing critical readers. Like reading\, Smart’s book is for our children’s lives. Don’t miss out because our kids must not miss out on the life-giving power of reading.”—Ibram X. Kendi\, National Book Award-winning author of Stamped from the Beginning and How to Be an Antiracist \nFor more info email: info@gatewayeducationalservices.org

SUMMARY:“Plant It Forward this Spring” – Shop for Native Plants at SB Botanic Garden Nursery
DESCRIPTION:As the end of California’s rainy season nears\, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden Nursery offers a weekend “Plant It Forward this Spring” event featuring a larger-than-usual number and variety of native plants for sale. A preview for Garden members only is held Friday\, March 3\, and public shopping is Saturday and Sunday\, March 4 and 5\, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. \n“Native plants do best if they get in the ground before the end of the rainy season\,” says Matt Straka\, the Garden’s retail manager. “The Nursery is open year-found\, but were ready to ‘spring forward’ with an even larger assortment of species that are ready to be planted right now including unique items not always available. During this special weekend\, we’ll restock almost constantly to ensure a wide variety is available no matter what time you visit.” \nLocated just inside the Garden’s gate\, the Nursery offers a wide selection of easy-to-grow native plants year-round. Garden members receive a 10% discount on every purchase. \nFor this event\, in addition to the expert Nursery sales staff who answer questions and make recommendations\, volunteer helpers are available to assist shoppers with transporting purchases to the parking lot. \nVisitors wanting to visit the Garden in addition to shopping must make an advance reservation at www.sbbotanicgarden.org/visit/hours-reservations. Visitors just shopping do not require Garden reservations; they can park in a “member” parking spot and check-in at the front kiosk to receive a shopper pass. \nOnline shopping is also available at shop.SBBotanicGarden.org. Shoppers choose from a list of available species and pick up their purchases in the Garden parking lot at a later date. Photos and lists of suggested groundcovers\, shrubs and trees\, plants for slope and erosion control\, lawn substitutes\, and easy to grow varieties can be found at https://sbbotanicgarden.org/grow/gardening-resources

SUMMARY:SOUL AND SOIL: Prenatal & Postnatal Gatherings
DESCRIPTION:Studies show that digging in the dirt can uplift your spirit. The friendly bacteria\, Mycobacterium vaccae\, present in the soil stimulates serotonin production\, acting as a natural antidepressant. We believe the lack of understanding around prenatal and postnatal care has resulted in isolated\, overlooked\, and overwhelmed mothers\, and that “postnatal” is not a stage\, but forever. The SLO Botanical Garden offers a safe space (and plenty of healthy soil) to help us connect to our bodies\, our littles\, the natural world\, and each other. Including snacks\, activities\, and care for little ones\, join us for grounding in your pregnancy and lifelong postpartum journey. Please bring water\, comfortable shoes\, sunscreen\, snacks and messy play clothes for your children\, and an optional blanket or mat if you’d like to sit on the floor. \nFor more information about registering for this program\, email millie@slobg.org\, or call (805) 541-1400 x302.
