SUMMARY:Lecture: “Attracting Pollinators to the California Native Landscape; An Introduction to Pollination Ecology” with Richard Merrill
DESCRIPTION:While the topic of pollination in Santa Barbara County is both engrossing and essential\, few are familiar with the actual processes of the phenomenon and the major pollinators behind it: bees\, of course\, but also hummingbirds\, butterflies\, moths\, and beneficial insects. \nRichard Merrill received his Masters Degree in Population Biology from UCLA\, and investigated the biodynamics of ecosystems in a PhD program at UCSB. During his time at UCSB\, Merrill’s imagination was captured by the idea to design landscapes that would attract\, nurture\, and provide shelter for local wildlife – pollinators and beneficial insects\, in particular. He then founded and became Chairman of the Dept. of Environmental Horticulture at Cabrillo Community College\, and has worked on this project for over 40 years now. Currently\, Merrill serves as a volunteer consultant to the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and runs a small horticultural consulting business. \nJoin us for an inspirational and educational lecture with Richard Merrill at the California Nature Art Museum (formerly the Wildling Museum) in the First Floor Wildling Gallery. \nAttendees will learn how the different colors\, shapes\, and sizes of flowers attract their specific pollinators\, enjoy a presentation of garden-worthy California native plants that are especially effective at attracting pollinators\, and discover the importance of home gardens in establishing local “islands” of native biodiversity. Guests will leave with the tools necessary to create or enhance their own native pollination landscapes! \n\nTickets are $5 for members\, and $10 for non-members. \nTickets can be purchased here: \nhttps://crm.bloomerang.co/HostedDonation?ApiKey=pub_151c3146-9973-11e7-afbe-024e165d44b3&WidgetId=418713600 \nFor more information\, contact Rachel Metz at rachel@calnatureartmuseum.org

SUMMARY:Join NatureTrack on AVILA BEACH\, Sunday March 17 Free Freedom Trax Devices For Wheelchair Users Will Be Available
DESCRIPTION:It’ll be your lucky day on Sunday\, March 17 from 11am to 2pm\, when NatureTrack will be at Avila State Beach to introduce those who use wheelchairs to the Freedom Trax devices at no cost to make a closer connection to nature.  These devices enable users to get up close to the waters’ edge and navigate the beach under your own control. Experience what people have consistently remarked… ‘This is a real game changer!” \n  \nNatureTrack will have several Freedom Trax devices available for wheelchair users to use on a first-come\, first-served basis. We do ask for RSVPs to be able to accommodate people in wheelchairs more efficiently. This apparatus can quickly and easily convert a manual wheelchair into a battery-powered\, all-terrain vehicle allowing those users to traverse beach sand and trails independently.  This is a great opportunity to try these out and get out on the beach again.  The RSVP form will give us the chance to have a Freedom Trax device ready for your chair. NatureTrack will also have two manual wheelchairs available for transfer should your wheelchair not fit on the device.   \nFor the Avila Beach event\, we will be meeting on the beach at Front Street and San Juan. \nAvila Beach Location – 50 San Juan St\, Avila Beach\, CA 93424.  \nMore About Avila: https://www.visitcalifornia.com/in/attraction/avila-beach \n  \nNatureTrack connecting people to nature\, every day\, every way. \n  \n411: \n3.17.24  from 11am – 2pm at  Avila State Beach\, 50 San Juan Avenue\, Avila Beach\, CA 93424.  \nRSVP: (805)886-2047  abby@naturetrack.org  \nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdZ0Lu5faVcM1Ks9Do-GUlk-ck5N_QMnVNippO8If5dv10mKg/viewform?vc=0&c=0&w=1&flr=0 \n  \nNatureTrack is a 501c3 nonprofit that provides outdoor docent-led field trips during the usual school day for Santa Barbara County children at no cost to the schools or students\, utilizing local trails and beaches throughout north and south county. NatureTrack’s mission is two-fold: to encourage students to embrace our natural world with respect and wonder\, inspiring them to be stewards of our natural resources\, and prepare school-aged students with the attitudes\, leadership skills\, and habits for lifelong learning.  \nNatureTrack expanded its mission of connecting kids to nature and is now connecting people who use wheelchairs of all ages to get out into nature using Freedom Trax. This device quickly changes a manual wheelchair into a battery powered\, all-terrain vehicle which can easily traverse sand and trails. Now NatureTrack wheelchair users of any age can enjoy natural areas previously inaccessible to them using Trax. https://naturetrack.org. NatureTrack is expanding its reach up to San Luis Obispo and down to Ventura County with the Trax program. Thanks go to the grantors including: UCSB’s Coastal Fund\, California State Coastal Conservancy\, Parks California ‘Route to Parks’ grant and the Coastal Resource Enhancement Fund. And now\, the California Access for All grant to expand the Freedom Tracks program up to North SB County. \n  \nhttps://NatureTrack.org    www.McFaddenPR.com

SUMMARY:The (Mad) Hatter Reception
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Spring\, Women’s History Month and the recently curated exhibit “The (Mad) Hatter\,” Flying Goat is hosting a reception on Friday\, March 29\, 4-6pm at the Tasting Room & Art Salon. With over fifty hats collected over fifty years\, Chief Philosopher/Proprietor Kate Griffith has been nicknamed “The Mad Hatter” by her husband (and Winemaker) Norm Yost. Ladies and gents are invited to put on their favorite chapeau\, channel their alter-ego and join in the fun. Easter bonnets are especially welcome! \n“Swept up with all the possibilities of who I could be (or pretend to be) with the change of a hat\, I began collecting all styles of headgear in my late teens\,” remarked Griffith. “Almost fifty years and over fifty hats later\, my collection includes functional to classical to whimsical styles. They all give me great delight. My husband admits that this is a side of me he didn’t even know existed. I’ve been storing most of my hats in vintage trunks\, including a Victorian hat trunk from my great grandmother.” \nGriffith doffs a hat to Women’s History Month and the many ladies of inspiration\, such as feminist icon Bella Abzug\, who have had empowerment through their colorful\, flamboyant or unique hats. These leaders and other less known women are also celebrated for wearing “many hats” in their professional and personal lives. \n“The (Mad) Hatter” collection includes diversity in expression\, from a coy fascinator to French beret to cloche hat. Griffith playfully displays the hats with a dozen themes\, such as “Day at the Races\,” “Out of Africa” and “Tea Time.” Dare you venture into the Tasting Room and go down the rabbit hole of Griffith’s imagination? You may even find Alice or a frisky March Hare. \nFlying Goat Cellars is known for age worthy fine Pinot Noir and sparkling wine without pretense. The Tasting Room\, located at 1520 East Chestnut Court in Lompoc\, is open Thursday-Monday 11am-4pm. Rotating art exhibits are hosted throughout the year at Flying Goat. If you are interested in an exhibit\, please contact 805-736-9032 or info@flyinggoatcellars.com.

New this year: smoothies and coffee for purchase from Claudia Coffee Bar food truck. \n“The Easter Bunny gave us magic seeds that produce blades of grass that grow to just the perfect height to cradle the eggs and make them easy for little hands to grab\,” said Dean Noble\, the park’s executive director. “As with past years\, he and Mrs. Bunny will be at the Great Egg Hunt to meet all their friends.” \nThe park opens at 9 a.m. and there are three timed starts by age group: Baby Bunnies (ages 0 to 3) at 10 a.m.; Daring Ducks (ages 4 to 6) at 10:45 a.m.; and Jack Rabbits (ages 7 to 10) at 11:30 a.m. Festivities continue until noon. \nHundreds of egg-seekers are expected\, and parking is limited. Families are encouraged to arrive early. Advance VIP parking permits are available now at $20 per car by visiting the Elings Park Office or calling (805) 569-5611; permits must be picked up by Friday\, March 29 at noon. Parking on the day of the event is $10 per car\, paid at the entry gate\, first-come-first served. \nFor more information\, call Elings Park at (805) 569-5611 or visit www.elingspark.org.

SUMMARY:Beth Gates Warren on Julien Levy: Maestro of the Art World
DESCRIPTION:Noted photography scholar Beth Gates Warren will present a fascinating lecture on Julien Levy (1906–81)\, who is best remembered today as the art dealer who brought Surrealism to the United States. His eponymous New York City Gallery (1931–49) was generally regarded as the best place to view cutting-edge work by such artists as Salvador Dalí\, Max Ernst\, Alberto Giacometti\, Arshile Gorky\, Frida Kahlo and Man Ray. A monumental just-published four-volume set of books presents an uncensored insider’s view of Levy\, the artists he exhibited\, and the influence he wielded during the 1930s and ’40s. Gates Warren’s talk will also include a discussion of Levy’s deep artistic and personal connections with Santa Barbara.

SUMMARY:St. Joseph High School Community Theatre presents Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella
DESCRIPTION:With its 10th production\, the St. Joesph High School Community Theatre presents Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. This production will take place at the Clark Center for the Performing Arts in Arroyo Grande\, CA with three performances on April 19 th and 20th 2024. \nThe school’s theater program began in 2019 under the directorship of Amy Curti and Erinn Dougherty. Beginning with Les Misérables\, the school has produced ten shows including Phantom of the Opera\, High School Musical\, The Little Mermaid\, Evita and The Music Man to name a few. The cast consists primarily of St. Joseph High School students\, but is open to community members from other schools\, grades 6-12. \nIn 2023\, Ms. Dani Payne stepped into the director’s chair with Shrek The Musical being her first show with the company. With a new director came a new venue\, traveling from the SJHS gym up to The Clark Center for the Performing Arts in Arroyo Grande. While this change has brought on some logistical challenges\, the opportunity to work in a larger\, professional venue far outweigh the “distance from home”. Performing at the Clark Center allows the students to experience the full aspects of a theatre\, complete with dressing rooms\, a green room\, hands-on opportunities for the tech team\, and more. Additionally\, it allows their audience a treat\, as the school-aged performers grew to fill a larger theater than they ever have before. \nAll ages are welcome to see SJHS Community Theatre presents Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella on April 19th and 20th\, 2024 at the Clark Center for the Performing Arts in Arroyo Grande. This year a Saturday matinee will be added to the schedule. Ticket sales will be through the Clark Center Box Office. \nSJHS Community Theatre is under the direction of Dani Payne\, teacher and Performing Arts Director at St. Joseph High School in Santa Maria\, CA. SJHS is a 9-12 Catholic learning community of students\, parents and educators that delivers the highest quality college preparatory programs and inspires a strong family spirit of shared Christian values in students who seek to develop their faith\, their intellect\, and their ability to make a positive mark on the world in which they live. \nFor more information\, please contact Dani Payne dpayne@sjhsknights.com. \nSt. Joseph High School Community Theatre presents Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella

SUMMARY:Native Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Native Plant Appreciation Month with native plants\, coffee\, and used books. Enjoy a large variety of native plants for sale from Yes Yes Nursery and Manzanita Nursery\, be inspired by educational materials from Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden\, cozy-up to a cup of coffee (and a bag of compost!) from Considered Coffee Co.\, peruse a selection of used books benefitting Museum education\, and get creative with a free planter-painting activity. \nNative plants are vitally important to the biodiversity\, beauty\, and stability that make Santa Barbara County the ecologically rich place that it is. Healthy native plant populations are generally more self-sustaining and drought-resistant than non-native plants (and can therefore help in conserving water)\, and support the native pollinators and animals that rely on them for survival. \nFrom 11AM-1PM\, enjoy a free guided planter-painting activity.
