DESCRIPTION:Rincon Point takes center stage at the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History’s next talk in the Talk & Talkback speaker series. Vince Burns and Stephen Bates will explore the transformation of Rincon Point from a scruffy\, unpopulated beach into the legendary surf spot of today. DESCRIPTION:Students for Eco-Education and Agriculture (SEEAG) is hosting a tour of McGrath Family Farm in Camarillo on Saturday\, March 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The tour is part of SEEAG’s “Farm Day Every Day\,” a series of free community events held throughout the year in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. \nAttendees will tour the farm grounds\, learn about how produce and flowers grow year-round and see firsthand the day-to-day life of local farmers. Guests will also participate in a strawberry U-Pick opportunity and learn about Farmivore\, a local farmer-owned food hub. \nThe McGrath family has been farming on the coast of Southern California for five generations. Leading the tour are Phil McGrath\, Michael Roberts\, and Arianna Bozzolo. Representatives from the Rodale Institute will also be part of the tour and talk about their work in organic research at the farm. \nFree coffee\, pastries and fruit will be provided. We’ll create a safe and supportive space where attendees can connect\, reflect\, and grow through their shared and lived experience of pregnancy into parenthood. \nHeld in the natural setting of the Children’s Garden at the SLO Botanical Garden\, this event will offer guest speakers\, guided journaling\, peer support\, and facilitated discussions\, all rooted in evidence-based care and holistic wellness. \nThis group will meet once per week on Thursdays\, from 10am until 11:30am – from April 10 until May 15\, for a six-week session. \nOur intended audience includes pregnant individuals\, new parents/caregivers\, and those navigating the transition into parenthood up to one year\, with a focus on accessible\, inclusive\, and facilitated peer support. Refreshments & light snacks will be provided. Older children up to about age three are welcome and care will be provided in the Children’s Garden.

DESCRIPTION:This program is especially designed for beginners who would like to learn to recognize the beautiful birds of the Botanical Garden and the Central Coast. Practice making observations and learn to use binoculars\, spotting scopes\, and field guides. We’ll share resources available for ongoing skill building. \nThe morning of the workshop we’ll have taxidermy specimens\, a slide presentation\, and lots of time to ask questions. We’ll provide you with handouts to help you with your notes. There will be a short break for lunch and then we will go on a bird walk around the gardens to practice your new skill. If it’s raining\, we’ll practice indoors. \nAdults and children 9 and over are welcome to attend. \nBring binoculars if you have them. We will have a few loaner binoculars and a variety of guidebooks to assist you.\nBring a lunch\, snacks\, and bottled water. Dress for the weather. Your class fee gives you access to the Garden all day.

We’ll have plenty of seeds that you can take home and plant in your own garden. SUMMARY:Voices of Change: A Conversation on Postpartum Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation between long-time local activist and author Jane Honikman and historian Rachel Louise Moran (University of North Texas) on postpartum depression and parental mental health. This event celebrates the establishment of the Jane Honikman Papers at UCSB Library’s Special Research Collections and the publication of Moran’s new book\, Blue: A History of Postpartum Depression in America\, which draws on the collection. \nHonikman and Moran will explore the lasting impact of Honikman’s leadership of national and international non-profit organizations such as Postpartum Education for Parents (PEP) in Santa Barbara\, the remarkable historical shifts in approaches to postpartum depression\, and the crucial importance of parental mental health for families and communities. \nThe event is cosponsored by the UCSB Center for Feminist Futures and the Health Justice and Community Initiative\, and held in conjunction with UCSB Reads 2025. \nThis event may be photographed or recorded. \nJane Honikman\, M.S. is an activist and advocate for parental mental health who was born and raised in Palo Alto\, California. After graduating from Whittier College with a BA in sociology in 1967\, she and her husband Terry moved to Goleta Valley in 1970. Her career began in 1977 as a young parent and co-founder of Postpartum Education for Parents (PEP) in Santa Barbara. In 1980 she received an individual research grant from the American Association of University Women to study The Growth and Dynamics of Postpartum Support Groups in the United States. Based on her research\, Honikman founded Postpartum Support International (PSI) in 1987 and directed the organization for 18 years.  She received her MS in psychology in 1995. Honikman co-founded The Parental Action Institute (PAI) in 2016 and has published 6 books\, most recently Postpartum is Forever Social Support from Conception through Grandparenthood. The book is both a memoir and the history of the parental mental health movement. Honikman and her husband have three married adult children\, eight grandchildren and a cat. \nRachel Louise Moran is an Associate Professor of History and Department Chair at the University of North Texas. She is the author of Blue: A History of Postpartum Depression in America (Chicago\, 2024) and Governing Bodies: American Politics and the Shaping of the Modern Physique (Penn\, 2018). She has articles in Gender & History\, The Journal of the History of Sexuality\, The Journal of American History\, and Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences\, as well as several book chapters. Moran has won grants and fellowships from the National Science Foundation\, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists\, and the Woodrow Wilson Foundation. She considers herself a historian of U.S. women’s and gender history and the history of health and medicine.

DESCRIPTION:More than 20\,000 candy-filled eggs are up for grabs at Elings Park’s annual Great Egg Hunt\, held Saturday\, April 19\, 2025\, from 9 a.m. to noon in the park’s softball fields. The free egg hunt is organized by age groups for children up to age 10. Children should bring their own baskets. \nThe park opens at 9 a.m.\, and there are three timed starts by age group: Baby Bunnies (ages 0 to 3) at 10 a.m.; Daring Ducks (ages 4 to 6) at 10:30 a.m.; and Jack Rabbits (ages 7 to 10) at 11 a.m. Festivities continue until noon. \nThe free\, festive annual event also includes visits from and photos with the Easter Bunny plus face painters\, Luna’s Jumps bounce houses\, smoothies and coffee for purchase from Claudia Coffee Bar food truck\, and festive music provided by Music by Bonnie. \nHundreds of egg-seekers are expected\, and parking is limited. Families are encouraged to arrive early. Parking on the day of the event is $10 per car\, paid at the entry gate\, and is first come\, first served. DESCRIPTION:RSVP here. \nJoin us for UCSB Library’s Inaugural Kenneth Karmiole Annual Lecture series in Religion in American Life featuring Dr. J. Gordon Melton. In 1968\, Melton founded the Institute for the Study of American Religion and then donated the research library to UC Santa Barbara in 1985 providing the foundation for the American Religion Collection. Melton will shed light on the origin of the collection and how his encounter with the psychic/metaphysical world influenced its development and curatorial direction. \nAbout the Speaker\nDr. J. Gordon Melton became Distinguished Professor of American Religious History at Baylor University’s Institute for Studies in Religion (ISR) in 2011 and directs the Institute for the Study of American Religion in Woodway\, Texas. Since joining ISR\, he has led joint projects\, including a census of American Buddhist and Hindu communities (2010\, updated 2019) and a church congregation survey in McLennan County\, Texas; Whatcom County\, Washington; and Richmond\, Virginia. For two decades\, he has also monitored the evolving church landscape in China. \nDr. Melton holds degrees from Birmingham-Southern College (B.A.\, 1964)\, Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary (M.Div.\, 1968)\, and Northwestern University (Ph.D.\, 1975). He is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church. Since joining Baylor\, Dr. Melton has edited Religions of the World: A Comprehensive Encyclopedia of Belief and Practice\, Religious Celebrations: An Encyclopedia of Holidays\, Festivals\, Solemn Observances\, and Spiritual Commemorations\, and Faiths across Time: 5\,000 Years of Religious History (2014). \nA pioneer in New Religions Studies\, he helped establish the sub-discipline and serves on the international board of the Center for Studies in New Religions (CESNUR) in Turin\, Italy\, a leading academic association on new and minority religions. \nAbout the American Religions Collection\nThe American Religions Collection (ARC) was established by J. Gordon Melton in 1968 and is located in UCSB Library’s Special Research Collections. The purpose of ARC is to collect\, organize\, preserve\, and make available to researchers primary resources relating to religious bodies and practices in the United States\, with a particular focus on new religious movements. The Collection contains and solicits materials generated by\, associated with\, or written about these religious bodies and practices\, including their historical\, literary\, social\, and artistic aspects\, and may include relevant international materials. \nAbout the Series\nThe Kenneth Karmiole Annual Lecture Series on Religion in American Life is an endowed fund established by Kenneth Karmiole in support of an annual public lecture series related to the research\, scholarship and collection materials within the UC Santa Barbara Library’s American Religions Collection (ARC).

Or viewed a tree surrounded by smoke? \nIn honor of Arbor Day on April 25th\, docent Faylla Chapman will lead a tour of the trees in the garden\, tell their stories\, and point out their blooms. It’s amazing how many trees blossom and we don’t really notice them. Trees in the Mediterranean climate are especially beautiful with blooms big and small\, white\, yellow\, pink and purple\, and often fragrant. \n \nFaylla Chapman is a docent at the Botanical Garden\, and she has made the trees in the garden her specialty.  Blooming or not\, she can tell you their stories and allow you to appreciate them in special ways.

DESCRIPTION:Let your imagination take the lead at Crafternoons\, every Wednesday from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm and Saturday from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm\, in the EE Makerspace above Art From Scrap.\nJoin us for our May Crafternoons: Tinker Lab\, where creativity meets sustainability! This month\, we’re working on creative machines that jump\, fly\, and walk with reclaimed materials. Perfect for all ages and skill levels\, these eco-friendly projects encourage kids to craft purposefully while having a blast.\nCraft for the Earth Projects include:\nJack & Jill Jumpers – Craft classic pull-string jumping jack toys using reclaimed paper and brads—watch their arms and legs spring to life with a tug!\nMarionettes – Create your own characterful puppets using upcycled materials\, string\, and imagination—then bring them to life with a tug of a string!\nUpcycled Aviators – Build playful airplanes from repurposed bits and bobs\, and let your creativity take flight!\nCome craft and create with us! Sign up now!\nCost: $8.00 per person. Crafternoons are for kids ages 5 and up. Please note that our workshop is upstairs and utilizes hot glue guns. Adults must remain in the EE Makerspace with their child.\nWe have something for everyone at the EE Makerspace\, so bring the kiddos—Crafternoons are just for them!

SUMMARY:Grow & Gather: A Perinatal Wellness Circle
DESCRIPTION:The intention of this small group gathering is to provide support for expectant and postpartum parents/caregivers in nurturing their mental\, emotional\, and physical well-being. We’ll create a safe and supportive space where attendees can connect\, reflect\, and grow through their shared and lived experience of pregnancy into parenthood. \nHeld in the natural setting of the Children’s Garden at the SLO Botanical Garden\, this event will offer guest speakers\, guided journaling\, peer support\, and facilitated discussions\, all rooted in evidence-based care and holistic wellness. \nThis group will meet once per week on Thursdays\, from 10am until 11:30am – from April 10 until May 15\, for a six-week session. \nOur intended audience includes pregnant individuals\, new parents/caregivers\, and those navigating the transition into parenthood up to one year\, with a focus on accessible\, inclusive\, and facilitated peer support. Refreshments & light snacks will be provided. Older children up to about age three are welcome and care will be provided in the Children’s Garden.
