SUMMARY:Art in Service of the Land
DESCRIPTION:This collaborative exhibition celebrates the intersection of art and environmental stewardship\, highlighting the efforts of the Oak Group\, the UCSB Cheadle Center for Biodiversity & Ecological Restoration\, and Coal Oil Point Reserve to conserve the Devereux Slough. Art in Service of the Land invites viewers to explore how art documents\, interprets\, and amplifies the ongoing work of conservation\, revealing the beauty and complexity of the North Campus Open Space (NCOS) and inspiring engagement with our local environment. \nThis exhibition was curated and cosponsored by the Oak Group and the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration\, in collaboration with UCSB Library staff. \nThe Oak Group is one of the first artist groups in the U.S. to combine creativity with conservation. Since 1986\, Oak Group artists have exhibited artworks painted on location to raise awareness and funds for open spaces\, generating over $3 million in sales to support the preservation of lands for wildlife\, recreation\, ranching\, and farming. The group includes 25 active members and has presented more than 100 exhibitions benefiting over 20 conservation organizations. \nThe Cheadle Center manages over 340 acres of open space between Ellwood Mesa and Goleta Slough\, supporting habitat conservation\, upland and wetland restoration\, and sustainable stormwater management. These lands form a mosaic of oak woodland\, coastal sage scrub\, grassland\, and wetland ecosystems that sustain high regional biodiversity. The Center also provides critical academic opportunities for UCSB students\, including internships\, field courses\, and independent projects supported by the Research and Monitoring Mentorship Program.

SUMMARY:The Chocolate Experience: Factory Tour and Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Twenty-Four Blackbirds is excited to introduce The Chocolate Experience: Factory Tour and Tasting! Combining the best elements of our previous Behind the Scenes and In-Depth tours\, this new and improved event is for someone with a high interest in single-origin dark chocolate\, where it comes from\, how it’s processed and the technicalities behind making shiny\, lusciously smooth chocolate from what starts as a small\, bitter bean. You’ll get to taste chocolate at every stage\, from bean to bar (including sampling through all our single origin dark chocolate bars)\, as well as other products we make\, like caramel and chocolate-covered espresso beans. We’ll describe the stages of roasting\, sorting\, refining and tempering. You’ll come away having tasted a lot of chocolate and having learned more about our specialty!

SUMMARY:UCSB Reads 2026 Presents Author Michelle Zauner
DESCRIPTION:Bestselling author and Grammy-nominated musician Michelle Zauner (Japanese Breakfast) shares the moving story behind her memoir Crying in H Mart\, a powerful meditation on family\, food\, identity and loss. Through lyrical prose and emotional honesty\, Zauner explores her Korean-American heritage and her mother’s enduring influence\, evoking the tastes and textures that shape memory. \nNow entering its milestone 20th year\, UCSB Reads is UC Santa Barbara’s award-winning common book program that fosters a shared sense of belonging by bringing the campus and Santa Barbara communities together each year to read a common book that explores compelling issues of our time. Each year\, an advisory committee composed of UCSB faculty\, staff\, students\, and community partners helps the Library select an intellectually stimulating\, interdisciplinary book by a living author that appeals to a wide range of readers and can be incorporated into the UCSB curriculum. \nThe UCSB Reads 2026 book selection is Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner. Zauner’s debut book spent 60 weeks on The New York Times hardcover non-fiction bestseller list and received a 2022 American Book Award and the 2021 Goodreads Choice Award for Memoir & Autobiography. It was also named a top book of the year by numerous publications\, including TIME\, The Atlantic\, and Entertainment Weekly. \nMichelle Zauner is a young Korean-American musician\, singer\, songwriter\, director\, and author. She is the lead vocalist of acclaimed indie pop band Japanese Breakfast. The band’s third album\, Jubilee (2021)\, charted on the Billboard 200\, peaking at No. 56\, and was nominated for two Grammy Awards – for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album. TIME magazine named Zauner one of the 100 most influential people of 2022.
