SUMMARY:Public Meeting to Discuss Sheep Grazing at the Foothills
DESCRIPTION:Channel Islands Restoration would like you to invite for a public meeting to discuss the benefits of sheep grazing at the San Marcos Foothills Preserve. This open discussion will outline how grazing helps reduce wildfire risk and supports environmentally sustainable habitats for native species. Sheep grazing was a primary factor in preventing devastation to communities surrounding the San Marcos Foothills Preserve during the Cave Fire that erupted in 2019. \nThis meeting is an opportunity to learn about how grazing impacts our community. Channel Islands Restoration and our partners at Cuyama Lamb will be present to answer any questions you have about our grazing program. To mark the occasion\, Cuyama Lamb will also bring several lambs. We will meet at the entrance of the San Marcos Foothills Preserve on Via Gaitero Road Wednesday\, December 21st at 2 pm to discuss this critical topic. We will not require reservations for our meeting. However\, please feel free to let us know if you’re able to join our event. We look forward to a discussion about this advantageous community program. For additional information or questions\, contact volunteer@cirweb.org

SUMMARY:READING FOR OUR LIVES A Literacy Action Plan from Birth to Six by Maya Payne Smart
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we dive into Reading for Our Lives\, A Literacy Action Plan from Birth to Six.\nThe author\, Maya Payne Smart\, will be in attendance\, presenting and signing books. \nThis is a free event designed to educate parents and children on the importance of reading at an early age. \nTaco truck from 5pm – 6pm\nFree childcare for ages 4-12 from 6:30pm – 8:30pm (Registration required) \nIn READING FOR OUR LIVES\, A Literacy Action Plan from Birth to Six\, writer\, educator\, and literacy advocate Maya Payne Smart challenges the bath-book-bed mantra and the idea that reading aloud to our kids is enough to ensure school readiness—a myth Smart believed until her daughter started school and Smart found her reading progress lacking. Smart realized that our current approach to literacy offers too little\, too late.  \nREADING FOR OUR LIVES is a timely\, necessary tool as U.S. literacy hits critical levels. Currently\, there are 43 million Americans between ages 16 to 65 who can’t read well enough to complete a job application\, follow a bus schedule\, understand a rental agreement or parse choices at the ballot box. Low-income kids and children of color suffer the most. READING FOR OUR LIVES offers parents from all walks a life hope and a lifeline. Smart encourages and motivates caregivers to use whatever they have of their most valuable resource – time – to set their children on the road for success. \nMaya Payne Smart is a writer\, parent educator\, and literacy advocate who has served on the boards of numerous library and literacy organizations. She and her family live in Milwaukee\, where she serves as affiliated faculty in educational policy and leadership in the College of Education at Marquette University. Her website\, MayaSmart.com\, provides tips and tools for parents to nurture\, teach\, and advocate for kids on the road to reading. \n“READING FOR OUR LIVES is the book to turn to when nurturing critical readers. Like reading\, Smart’s book is for our children’s lives. Don’t miss out because our kids must not miss out on the life-giving power of reading.”—Ibram X. Kendi\, National Book Award-winning author of Stamped from the Beginning and How to Be an Antiracist \nFor more info email: info@gatewayeducationalservices.org

SUMMARY:Free Senior Day at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden
DESCRIPTION:For the eighth year in a row\, Santa Barbara Botanic Garden offers six free admission days to seniors aged 60 and older. Last year\, more than 1\,370 seniors attended the Senior Days\, a new record. They are made possible by Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Chapels\, and include docent tours\, native plant talks\, live acoustic music\, and more activities. \nThe dates for Senior Days in 2023 are Wednesdays beginning February 15 and continuing April 19\, June 21\, August 16\, October 18\, and December 13. We’re thrilled to bring this programming back with the help of our returning sponsor Welch-Ryce-Haider.” \n“Welch-Ryce-Haider is always looking for ways to support the community\,” said Managing Partner Stephen Gibson of Welch-Ryce-Haider. “As Santa Barbara’s oldest funeral chapel and crematorium\, we take pride in helping families celebrate life and what better way to get the most out of life than enjoying the beauty and serenity offered at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. It has been our honor to sponsor the Free Senior Days since 2015 and we look forward to 2023 being the best year yet.” \nFor questions about Senior Days\, please visit https://sbbotanicgarden.org/classes-events/free-senior-day-february-15-2023 or call (805) 682-4726\, ext. 138. \n

SUMMARY:“Plant It Forward this Spring” – Shop for Native Plants at SB Botanic Garden Nursery
DESCRIPTION:As the end of California’s rainy season nears\, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden Nursery offers a weekend “Plant It Forward this Spring” event featuring a larger-than-usual number and variety of native plants for sale. A preview for Garden members only is held Friday\, March 3\, and public shopping is Saturday and Sunday\, March 4 and 5\, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. \n“Native plants do best if they get in the ground before the end of the rainy season\,” says Matt Straka\, the Garden’s retail manager. “The Nursery is open year-found\, but were ready to ‘spring forward’ with an even larger assortment of species that are ready to be planted right now including unique items not always available. During this special weekend\, we’ll restock almost constantly to ensure a wide variety is available no matter what time you visit.” \nLocated just inside the Garden’s gate\, the Nursery offers a wide selection of easy-to-grow native plants year-round. Garden members receive a 10% discount on every purchase. \nFor this event\, in addition to the expert Nursery sales staff who answer questions and make recommendations\, volunteer helpers are available to assist shoppers with transporting purchases to the parking lot. \nVisitors wanting to visit the Garden in addition to shopping must make an advance reservation at www.sbbotanicgarden.org/visit/hours-reservations. Visitors just shopping do not require Garden reservations; they can park in a “member” parking spot and check-in at the front kiosk to receive a shopper pass. \nOnline shopping is also available at shop.SBBotanicGarden.org. Shoppers choose from a list of available species and pick up their purchases in the Garden parking lot at a later date. Photos and lists of suggested groundcovers\, shrubs and trees\, plants for slope and erosion control\, lawn substitutes\, and easy to grow varieties can be found at https://sbbotanicgarden.org/grow/gardening-resources
