DESCRIPTION:UCSB Library is pleased to present Rae Wynn-Grant\, an affiliated researcher with the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management\, as the spring speaker in the Pacific Views: Library Speaker Series. \nWynn-Grant is a wildlife ecologist with an expertise in uncovering how human activity influences carnivore behavior and ecology. She received her BS in environmental studies from Emory University\, her MS in environmental studies from Yale University\, and her PhD in ecology and evolution from Columbia University. She is a Research Fellow with the National Geographic Society\, with whom she has appeared on a variety of televised nature programs and for whom she’s currently on a 20-city speaking tour as part of Nat Geo Live. She serves on The North Face’s Explore Fund Council\, co-hosts Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom Protecting the Wild on NBC\, hosts the podcast “Going Wild with Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant\,” produced by PBS\, and has been featured in Vogue\, Forbes\, the New York Times\, and the Los Angeles Times\, among many others. \nHer new memoir Wild Life: Finding my Purpose in an Untamed World will be published in April 2024. Santa Barbara’s favorite so called “Punk Laureate\,” a prolific and provocative spinner of stories and satire\, is also a notoriously extroverted performer. “I enjoy demystifying the relationship between the reader and the writer\,” says Boyle. “It’s not a holy religion.” To add to the mix\, his daughter Kerrie will once again join him on stage. \nThe recipient of several prestigious awards\, including the O. Henry Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award\, Boyle wears his laurels lightly saying\, “I would rather get out and shake my stuff.” And when he shakes? “If I can get the reader to laugh\, also be moved\, then I’m going where I want to go.”

In his artful yet analytical books\, Obi Kaufmann explores the transformation of the resource landscape from its ancient origins through its modern challenges to its future possibilities. In this special presentation\, Obi will zoom in on the biodiversity crisis across the ecological island that is the California Floristic Province and where hope might be found in brilliant conservation efforts across the State. Heightened with lyrical prose and backed by up-to-the-minute\, well-sourced science\, Obi demonstrates how we learn from the deep past to uncover truths about the future.
