SUMMARY:Public Art and Campus Placemaking: Recentering the Artist in Communities of Practice
DESCRIPTION:UCSB Library is pleased to present Kim Yasuda (Art) in the Pacific Views: Library Speaker Series for Winter 2024.Through her own place-based\, public research and teaching\, and drawing on the UCSB Reads 2024 book\, Your Brain on Art: How the Arts Transform Us by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross\, Yasuda makes a compelling case for the untapped potential of the arts to enhance innovative campus research and interdivisional exchange among scholars and artists. \n\n\nKim Yasuda is an Artist and Professor of Public Practice in the Department of Art at UC Santa Barbara. Yasuda’s creative work and public research investigate the role of art practice\, and educational institutions in community development and public life. Her recent projects combine her teaching and research to shape pedagogical experiments at the intersection of disciplinary knowledge production and creative practice. SUMMARY:Lecture: “Attracting Pollinators to the California Native Landscape; An Introduction to Pollination Ecology” with Richard Merrill
DESCRIPTION:While the topic of pollination in Santa Barbara County is both engrossing and essential\, few are familiar with the actual processes of the phenomenon and the major pollinators behind it: bees\, of course\, but also hummingbirds\, butterflies\, moths\, and beneficial insects. \nRichard Merrill received his Masters Degree in Population Biology from UCLA\, and investigated the biodynamics of ecosystems in a PhD program at UCSB. During his time at UCSB\, Merrill’s imagination was captured by the idea to design landscapes that would attract\, nurture\, and provide shelter for local wildlife – pollinators and beneficial insects\, in particular. He then founded and became Chairman of the Dept. of Environmental Horticulture at Cabrillo Community College\, and has worked on this project for over 40 years now. Currently\, Merrill serves as a volunteer consultant to the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and runs a small horticultural consulting business. \nJoin us for an inspirational and educational lecture with Richard Merrill at the California Nature Art Museum (formerly the Wildling Museum) in the First Floor Wildling Gallery. \nAttendees will learn how the different colors\, shapes\, and sizes of flowers attract their specific pollinators\, enjoy a presentation of garden-worthy California native plants that are especially effective at attracting pollinators\, and discover the importance of home gardens in establishing local “islands” of native biodiversity. Guests will leave with the tools necessary to create or enhance their own native pollination landscapes! \n\nTickets are $5 for members\, and $10 for non-members. \nTickets can be purchased here: \nhttps://crm.bloomerang.co/HostedDonation?ApiKey=pub_151c3146-9973-11e7-afbe-024e165d44b3&WidgetId=418713600 \nFor more information\, contact Rachel Metz at rachel@calnatureartmuseum.org

SUMMARY:Beth Gates Warren on Julien Levy: Maestro of the Art World
DESCRIPTION:Noted photography scholar Beth Gates Warren will present a fascinating lecture on Julien Levy (1906–81)\, who is best remembered today as the art dealer who brought Surrealism to the United States. His eponymous New York City Gallery (1931–49) was generally regarded as the best place to view cutting-edge work by such artists as Salvador Dalí\, Max Ernst\, Alberto Giacometti\, Arshile Gorky\, Frida Kahlo and Man Ray. A monumental just-published four-volume set of books presents an uncensored insider’s view of Levy\, the artists he exhibited\, and the influence he wielded during the 1930s and ’40s. Gates Warren’s talk will also include a discussion of Levy’s deep artistic and personal connections with Santa Barbara.

SUMMARY:Reading and Conversation – T.C. Boyle
DESCRIPTION:The wild and wildly popular author T.C. Boyle returns to the Museum to read/perform one of his most topical short stories. Santa Barbara’s favorite so called “Punk Laureate\,” a prolific and provocative spinner of stories and satire\, is also a notoriously extroverted performer. “I enjoy demystifying the relationship between the reader and the writer\,” says Boyle. “It’s not a holy religion.” To add to the mix\, his daughter Kerrie will once again join him on stage. \nThe recipient of several prestigious awards\, including the O. Henry Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award\, Boyle wears his laurels lightly saying\, “I would rather get out and shake my stuff.” And when he shakes? “If I can get the reader to laugh\, also be moved\, then I’m going where I want to go.”
