DESCRIPTION:Combining punk abandon and tightly-coiled dance music has always been bonded into the band’s DNA. It’s this core plus their growth and mastery of songwriting that has seen them outlive the mid-2000s ‘indie/dance punk’ tag and has allowed them to consistently grow lyrically and sonically from album to album. As If is their most transcendent collection of songs yet. “Each album we’ve made has gotten closer and closer to our live set and this\, we’re proud to say\, is the closest we’ve come yet. We were heavily influenced by current dance music — Nina Kraviz\, Moodymann\, Paranoid London\, Rrose and Delroy Edwards were frequently referenced — and philosophically by the early ’90s house records we love on labels like Trax and Dancemania and by artists like Romanthony and Green Velvet. Those records sound great because they’re fairly raw attempts to use the technology of the time to ape the New York and Philly disco records that those producers loved. We figured\, if those old house records sound like they do because the artists manipulated disco samples with MPCs\, why couldn’t we just sample ourselves and manipulate the tracks with Ableton Live? The more raw it came out the better it felt\, not only because that’s what excited us about those old records\, but because it felt more punk\, which always feels good.”

DESCRIPTION:After 2 years\, the San Francisco rock and roll band is back on the road\, bringing their fans a first listen to some of the songs from their brand new album On The Other Side. Their recordings have managed to capture and even elevate the unadulterated joy of seeing them live. Even so\, one thing remains eternally true of the Stone Foxes; if you die without seeing them live\, it will have been a wasted life. \nBorn out of both global and personal hardships\, On The Other Side is an album of the heart. As the world was forced to look inward\, so were the Foxes. Quite literally for Shannon\, who underwent a painful open heart surgery (his second open heart surgery and fourteenth heart surgery in total). But\, out of this pain came a sweeping soundscape that feels like both new territory and a return to roots. \nThe production of this album was a journey in itself: written by Shannon and Spence\, rehearsed in their parents’ basement\, recorded in studios and living rooms throughout The Bay\, and mastered in Nashville. But through heartaches\, hardships and harbingers of doom\, the connecting force has always been love; brotherly love\, romantic love and\, of course\, the unbridled love of rock music. They exude this love during their unmissable live shows and when Shannon takes the band out on tour\, the world is better for it.

Other collaborations on the album include singer/songwriter Hirie\, producer Johnny Cosmic and producer Alific. You’ll hear a mix up of tasty musical ingredients that include ska\, reggae\, beachy surf vibes and catchy acoustic guitar riffs. That’s the old theatrical tradition.” One Match Left showcases these aspects in epic fashion\, with Nielsen playing the role of carnival barker\, lullaby crooner\, and rock & roll priest\, depending on the track. It’s actually Nielsen’s first time around without his partners from The Growlers; he’s now joined by old friends Christopher Darley (guitarist for Father John Misty) and Levi Prairie on songwriting duties.\n  \nNo stranger to the emotional landscapes of modern pop life\, producer Michael Andrews expands the songs from the theatrical and into the cinematic. From his Elgin Park Recordings studio in Glendale\, Andrews makes chart-topping hits (like the song “Mad World” from his soundtrack to Donnie Darko) and cult favorites (he scored the entirety of Freaks & Geeks and Pete Davidson’s King of Staten Island). “He’s an encyclopedia and extremely talented\,” says Nielsen of Andrews. “Which meant he could be a great commander in the studio.”\n  \nAssembling a core team of himself on guitar and bass\, Robert Walter (The Greyboy Allstars) on keys\, and Joey Waronker (Beck\, Atoms For Peace) on drums\, Andrews infuses the material with a lush palette\, more akin to Harry Nilsson and Serge Gainsbourg than anything we’ve heard before from Nielsen. Album opener “All That You’ll See is Everything” sets a carnivalesque tone\, a loopy and optimistic revelation about the songs that follow. “Virgin Lady Luck” alternately thunders and whispers\, a standout single that’s already turning heads on social media. “Long Train”channels Charanjit Singh’s Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat and West African jammers Tinariwen into a driving dance party. “How Do You Like It So Far (This Life)” attempts the impossible: thoughtful reggae pop\, free of beach bum clichés\, woven together into an atmospheric dub soundscape.\n“It’s all a bit of smoke and mirrors\,” says Nielsen\, speaking both of One Match Left in general\, and of the cover art made with photographer Pamela Littky (known for her surrealist ad campaigns for hit shows like Dave and Pam & Tommy). Nielsen as magician\, as clown\, as poetic trickster. DESCRIPTION:Los Olivos Rotary welcomes you to experience thirty of Santa Barbara County’s top wineries\, delicious bites from local chefs and gourmet producers\, and an afternoon of live jazz at the 17th annual Los Olivos Jazz and Olive Festival\, Saturday\, June 10. \nThis year’s headline entertainment is Grammy-nominated performer Denise Donatelli. She will be joined on stage in Lavinia Campbell Park by her all-star A Team band of Los Angeles musicians. \nLos Olivos Rotary has raised more than $500\,000 hosting this special event over the years\, with proceeds benefitting both local and international projects. Some projects include emergency boxes for local schools\, food for local seniors and veterans\, scholarships for local students\, support for local libraries and the arts\, home construction in Guatemala\, and humanitarian relief for Ukraine. \nTickets are $100 for adults and $25 for children over 12 years\, and can be purchased at www.jazzandolivefestival.org or by calling 805-245-7142.

DESCRIPTION:The 67th Annual Conejo Valley Days is set for June 15 through June 25 (dark June 19 and 20) at Conejo Creek Park South (23 Freeway/Janss Rd. exit) in Thousand Oaks.  Festival goers can enjoy carnival rides from Kastl Amusements plus midway games for all ages along with traditional fair and specialty foods. CVD features live rock and country bands including the Colette Lovejoy Band and 805 Social Club\, and line dancing led by instructor Kristal Lynn. Entry: $10 per person\, free for kids 10 and under. Active-duty military with military I.D.\, free. $35 unlimited ride wristbands are available for June 15 only.
