SUMMARY:C.A.R.L.’s Pooch Parade Returns to Ventura Harbor Village - Postponed due to Hurricane Hilary
DESCRIPTION:Update 8.19 – As of today\, the Pooch Parade has been postponed due to Hurricane Hilary. Please visit https://poochparade.org/ for updates about the new event date. \nVentura\, CA – Do you love dogs and superheroes? Canine Adoption and Rescue League’s (C.A.R.L.) 2023 Pooch Parade Dog Walk and Pet Expo on Sunday\, August 20\, will give you and your canine companion an opportunity to dress up as a beloved fictional comic book character while supporting C.A.R.L. This year’s Pooch Parade occurs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ventura Harbor Village\, 1583 Spinnaker Drive in Ventura\, on the grassy area.  \n“Our theme for this year’s event is ‘Superheroes\,'” said C.A.R.L. Board of Directors President Grace Cunningham\, “so I expect walkers and their pets will get as creative as possible with their and their best friends’ costumes.” \nThe cost to participate in the Pooch Parade costume contest is $50 for an individual walker with dog(s) and $180 for a four-person team and $40 per person over four team members with dog(s). Booth participation costs are $50 for a non-profit vendor booth and $100 for a regular vendor booth. Contact Sharon Clark at info@carldogs.org to inquire about sponsorships.  \nParticipants will have opportunities to play with adoptable dogs of all breeds and sizes. Pooch Parade will feature a DJ\, vendors\, agility demonstrations\, other dog demonstrations and a silent auction to benefit C.A.R.L. Major sponsors include Ohana Pet Hospital with offices in Ventura and Santa Paula and Boone Graphics in Goleta.  \nC.A.R.L. hosted its last Pooch Parade in 2019; activities were halted over the past four years due to the pandemic.  \nC.A.R.L. is located in Ventura County\, California and primarily serves Ventura County dogs. Because of our lifetime commitment to our dogs\, we have a preference to place dogs locally so we are available to them if needed. We rely on donations and do not receive government\, state or city funding. We operate almost entirely by volunteers. \nAbout C.A.R.L. \nCanine Adoption and Rescue League (C.A.R.L.) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit all breed\, no-kill dog rescue and adoption organization. Since 1996\, C.A.R.L. has rescued and placed thousands of unwanted\, sick\, abandoned and homeless dogs. Dogs in our adoption program are placed in pre-screened\, loving and secure homes. We make a lifetime commitment to all of our dogs.

SUMMARY:Pollinators “Nature Walk” of Elings Park Led by SB Botanic Garden
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to take part in a series of free Nature Walks to explore the biodiversity of the 230-acre Elings Park as part of a new collaboration between the Park and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. Each hike has a different natural history focus\, such as plants\, pollinators\, or birds\, and are led by Garden experts. \nThe walks are the start of as part of a larger collaborative effort between the two partners and the public to transform a section of the Park from invasive to native plants and document the effects. Future walks are scheduled\, once a month\, through the end of 2023. For more information\, visit www.SBBotanicGarden.org/calendar. \nPollinators are the focus of the walk on Saturday\, September 16\, 9 to 10 a.m.\, which is led by Sarah Cusser\, Ph.D.\, the Garden’s Terrestrial Invertebrate Conservation Ecologist\, and Kylie Etter\, Conservation Technician \n“We invite the public to join us in recovering this portion of Elings Park so they can see first-hand the power of California’s native plants\,” says Denise Knapp\, Ph.D.\, the Garden’s Director of Conservation and Research. “Ultimately\, through this experience\, we hope that our community will leave inspired and begin transformations in backyards and landscapes across SB County and beyond.” \nElings Park opened in 1985 as the result of a community campaign to turn the former landfill into a public park. First encompassing 90 acres\, the Park expanded to 230 acres in 1994 with the purchase of an adjacent property. \nApproximately 75% of Elings Park is undeveloped. Nine miles of trails traverse shady oak groves and sunny\, ocean-facing hillsides covered with chaparral. Nonnative plants\, which have encroached on the natural landscapes\, have been the target of the Park’s recent efforts at habitat restoration. Over the past two years\, more than 250 California native oaks have been planted\, plus hundreds of native grasses and shrubs. For the past three springs\, a flock of sheep have been brought in for eco-friendly weed removal and fire prevention. \n“While Elings Park is just steps away from thousands of residences\, portions of it are still surprisingly wild\,” says Dean Noble\, Elings Park executive director. “Many people who enjoy our athletic facilities and cultural events have never visited our scenic South Bluffs. With the expertise of Santa Barbara Botanic Garden\, we can transform that landscape and encourage the next generation of community scientists.” \nFUTURE NATURE WALKS \nSaturday\, October 21\, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. – Birds\, led by Scot Pipkin\, the Garden’s Director of Education\, and Zach Philips\, Ph.D.\, Terrestrial Invertebrate Conservation Ecologist \nSaturday\, November 18\, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. – Plants and Bugs\, led by Zach Philips\, Ph.D.\, the Garden’s Terrestrial Invertebrate Conservation Ecologist\, and José Flores\, Conservation Technician \nSaturday\, December 16\, 9 to 10 a.m. – Birds\, led by Scot Pipkin\, the Garden’s Director of Education\, and Zach Philips\, Ph.D.\, Terrestrial Invertebrate Conservation Ecologist \n

DESCRIPTION:Birds are the subject of the final walk in a series of free Nature Walks that explore the biodiversity of the 230-acre Elings Park as part of a new collaboration between the Park and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and are led by Garden experts. Held is Saturday\, December 16\, from 9 to 10 a.m.\, it is led by Scot Pipkin\, the Garden’s Director of Education\, and Zach Philips\, Ph.D.\, Terrestrial Invertebrate Conservation Ecologist. \n“We invite the public to join us in recovering this portion of Elings Park so they can see first-hand the power of California’s native plants\,” says Denise Knapp\, Ph.D.\, the Garden’s Director of Conservation and Research. With the expertise of Santa Barbara Botanic Garden\, we can transform that landscape and encourage the next generation of community scientists.”

SUMMARY:“Tiny Taxa Doing Big Things” -- “Itty-bitty” Organisms Focus of SB Botanic Garden Symposium
DESCRIPTION:A day-long exploration of “itty-bitty” organisms and their often overlooked yet critical ecological roles is presented by Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. At “Tiny Taxa Doing Big Things\,” their 11th annual symposium\, seven scientists who study tiny plants and creatures each present a talk focused on their area of interest\, including lichen\, moss\, biocrust\, flies\, ants\, and parasites\, among others. \nThe talks reveal how a “small yet mighty” taxon may have an outsized influence on larger organisms\, aid in conservation efforts\, and support biodiversity on the planet. Also examined are the relationships between these diverse organisms and how cutting-edge technology is used to study them. The session culminates in a panel discussion about how to help conserve both the “tiny taxa” and the natural world at large. \n“Tiny Taxa Doing Big Things” is held at the Santa Barbara County Education Office at 4400 Cathedral Oaks Road\, Santa Barbara\, and is also streamed online. Advance registration is required for both in person and online attendance. In person admission is $40 for the public\, and $15 for Garden Members and students. A catered lunch is included. Attendance for the virtual-only is free\, but registration is required. For a complete schedule of speakers and topics and registration information\, please visit https://sbbotanicgarden.org/classes-events/symposium-2024/. \n“Sometimes in life\, it’s the little things that make all the difference. That’s true in nature\, too\,” said the Garden’s Director of Conservation\, Denise Knapp\, Ph.D. “Some of the biggest jobs on the planet are done by the tiniest of organisms. For example\, lichens build soil\, while bacteria\, algae\, mosses and more hold it together\, then bugs and fungi fertilize and recycle. This tiny world is sometimes beautiful\, sometimes bizarre\, sometimes disgusting – but always fascinating.” \nThe winner of this year’s Pritzlaff Conservation Award is world-renowned botanist\, lichenologist\, and philanthropist Shirley C. Tucker\, Ph.D. Unable to attend the Symposium\, she is honored at this year’s at this event for her many conservation achievements in California and around the world.

SUMMARY:Capturing and Recapturing A Day in the Life of Martin Luther King\, Jr. Photographs by esteemed photojournalist Santi Visalli
DESCRIPTION:In honor of the MLK Federal Holiday and Black History Month photojournalist Santi Visalli has quite a story to tell that is sure to resonate with the public today.  He was the photographer hired to document an event with Dr. King back on April 15\, 1967. The assignment was from an Italian magazine\, based in Milan\, now long out of print\, which only used two photos out of ten rolls of film he shot. The negatives were considered lost…until three years ago. All shot in black & white\, the event was a 1967 Vietnam War Protest in New York City outside the U.N. and there are poignant images of the nearly 125\,000 people at the march\, along with Dr. King addressing the crowd. Visalli hopes the photos will inform current generations about MLK’s advocacy for peace in addition to his lifelong pursuit for Civil Rights.   \nSPECIAL NOTE:  The exhibit will be available to schools and community organizations that may wish to visit the exhibit as an educational opportunity about the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.  Contact Helene Schneider\, curator to make any arrangements for group visits. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these photos in such an intimate space.  To see more of Santi’s work\, his website is: https://www.thefinestphotos.com/ \n  \nDonate to keep MLK’s legacy alive and help underwrite the events and programs of the MLKSB Committee.  https://mlksb.org/donate/ \n  \nThe Community Arts Workshop is space for artistic endeavors and exploration—a “blank canvas” for artists\, thinkers\, innovators\, and creators to develop ideas\, make connections\, and build community. \nThe mission of the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Committee of Santa Barbara is to foster positive relationships between many diverse groups in the Santa Barbara community and the surrounding areas; to sponsor programs and events which exemplify the teachings of Dr. King; and to observe\, and celebrate the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Holiday.       \nwww.sbcaw.org \nwww.MLKSB.org

SUMMARY:NatureTrack’s Family Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:This is a new program from NatureTrack — Family Days are for parents\, grandparents and children to enjoy nature games and activities together.  NatureTrack has been leading K-12 students on the trails and beaches since 2011.  Now it’s giving families a chance to experience the ‘outdoor classroom.’  Freedom Trax will be provided to people who use wheelchairs or need extra assistance on the trail at no charge.   \n  \nNatureTrack is a 501c3 nonprofit that provides outdoor docent-led field trips during the usual school day for Santa Barbara County children at no cost to the schools or students\, utilizing local trails and beaches throughout north and south county. NatureTrack’s mission is two-fold: to encourage students to embrace our natural world with respect and wonder\, inspiring them to be stewards of our natural resources\, and prepare school-aged students with the attitudes\, leadership skills\, and habits for lifelong learning. Recently NatureTrack expanded its mission of connecting kids to nature and is now connecting people who use wheelchairs of all ages to get out into nature using Freedom Trax. This device quickly changes a manual wheelchair into a battery powered\, all-terrain vehicle which can easily traverse sand and trails. Now NatureTrack wheelchair users of any age can enjoy natural areas previously inaccessible to them using Trax. https://naturetrack.org. NatureTrack is expanding its reach up to San Luis Obispo and down to Ventura County with the Trax program. Thanks go to the grantors including: UCSB’s Coastal Fund\, California State Coastal Conservancy\, Parks California ‘Route to Parks’ grant and the Coastal Resource Enhancement Fund. And now\, the California Access for All grant to expand the Freedom Tracks program up to North SB County.  \nhttps://naturetrack.org \n  \nPlease contact Abby@naturetrack.org for more information. SUMMARY:Miss Chase: Santa Barbara’s Trailblazer
DESCRIPTION:Join Simon Kerry for a presentation on his new publication\, Miss Chase: Santa Barbara’s Trailblazer\, chronicling the life\, prescience\, importance and legacy of Pearl Chase and her work in Santa Barbara and beyond. \nPearl Chase’s strength of personality\, maturity\, intelligence and leadership qualities formed the bedrock that enabled her to look outwards and achieve so much in her lifetime. \nIn his book\, Kerry traces Chase’s early life and collegiate years at UC Berkeley through to her return to Santa Barbara and indelible impact on both California and the nation. During a tumultuous period in American history in the early twentieth century\, she paved a way for not only the environmentalist movement but also for women’s influence in politics in the federal and local civic spheres. Her compassionate\, charitable nature extended to many cultural groups and causes\, evident in her vocal support of protecting the lands and customs of Native Americans in the southwest. \nThe talk asks the questions: What can we learn from Pearl\, her pioneering activities and the causes to which she tirelessly devoted herself? What is the enduring legacy of this remarkable woman? \nWednesday\, February 7 · 5:30 – 7pm PST\nSanta Barbara Historical Museum\n136 East de la Guerra Santa Barbara\, CA 93101\nGet tickets here

SUMMARY:All Inclusive Fun at Family Days with NatureTrack
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy what K-12 students have been enjoying since 2011 — discover the beaches and trails in Santa Barbara County led by knowledgeable and fun docents.  They will give everyone opportunities to explore nature in the ‘outdoor classroom’ where learning comes alive along with fun.  Finding the balance in one’s life includes nature as a vital element.  \n  \nNatureTrack’s Family Days field trips (https://naturetrack.org/news-events/)  are for parents\, grandparents and children to enjoy nature games and activities together.  Learn more about the Douglas Family Preserve (1/28)\, The Santa Ynez Botanic Garden (3/10) and El Capitan State Beach (5/8) on the three inaugural outings scheduled.  \n  \nThe benefits of nature are well-documented as being in nature really does make a difference. There’s even a name for not having nature in the mix of your life – “nature deficit disorder.” https://richardlouv.com/blog/what-is-nature-deficit-disorder.  Plan to get your dose of ‘Vitamin N’ with us on this field trip.  \n  \nFreedom Trax units will be provided to people who use wheelchairs or to those who might need extra assistance on the trails at no charge.  Please RSVP  to abby@naturetrack.org.  \n  \nAll this at no charge\, just like NatureTrack (NT) has been doing since its’ formation for schools!  Every Field Trip for students is free and 30\,000 students can’t be wrong – they’ve called the NT Field Trips the “best day ever.”  Just come ready to learn and have fun.   \n  \nInfo: abby@naturetrack.org  \n805 886 2047  \n  \nwww.naturetrack.org  \n  \nFamily Days:  \nhttps://naturetrack.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Revised-App-12_22_23-for-2024.pdf

SUMMARY:Join NatureTrack on AVILA BEACH\, Sunday March 17 Free Freedom Trax Devices For Wheelchair Users Will Be Available
DESCRIPTION:It’ll be your lucky day on Sunday\, March 17 from 11am to 2pm\, when NatureTrack will be at Avila State Beach to introduce those who use wheelchairs to the Freedom Trax devices at no cost to make a closer connection to nature.  These devices enable users to get up close to the waters’ edge and navigate the beach under your own control. Experience what people have consistently remarked… ‘This is a real game changer!” \n  \nNatureTrack will have several Freedom Trax devices available for wheelchair users to use on a first-come\, first-served basis. We do ask for RSVPs to be able to accommodate people in wheelchairs more efficiently. This apparatus can quickly and easily convert a manual wheelchair into a battery-powered\, all-terrain vehicle allowing those users to traverse beach sand and trails independently.  This is a great opportunity to try these out and get out on the beach again.  The RSVP form will give us the chance to have a Freedom Trax device ready for your chair. NatureTrack will also have two manual wheelchairs available for transfer should your wheelchair not fit on the device.   \nFor the Avila Beach event\, we will be meeting on the beach at Front Street and San Juan. \nAvila Beach Location – 50 San Juan St\, Avila Beach\, CA 93424.  \nMore About Avila: https://www.visitcalifornia.com/in/attraction/avila-beach \n  \nNatureTrack connecting people to nature\, every day\, every way. \n  \n411: \n3.17.24  from 11am – 2pm at  Avila State Beach\, 50 San Juan Avenue\, Avila Beach\, CA 93424.  \nRSVP: (805)886-2047  abby@naturetrack.org  \nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdZ0Lu5faVcM1Ks9Do-GUlk-ck5N_QMnVNippO8If5dv10mKg/viewform?vc=0&c=0&w=1&flr=0 \n  \nNatureTrack is a 501c3 nonprofit that provides outdoor docent-led field trips during the usual school day for Santa Barbara County children at no cost to the schools or students\, utilizing local trails and beaches throughout north and south county. NatureTrack’s mission is two-fold: to encourage students to embrace our natural world with respect and wonder\, inspiring them to be stewards of our natural resources\, and prepare school-aged students with the attitudes\, leadership skills\, and habits for lifelong learning.  \nNatureTrack expanded its mission of connecting kids to nature and is now connecting people who use wheelchairs of all ages to get out into nature using Freedom Trax. This device quickly changes a manual wheelchair into a battery powered\, all-terrain vehicle which can easily traverse sand and trails. Now NatureTrack wheelchair users of any age can enjoy natural areas previously inaccessible to them using Trax. https://naturetrack.org.
