SUMMARY:Bird “Nature Walk” of Elings Park Led by SB Botanic Garden
DESCRIPTION:Birds are the subject of the final walk in a series of free Nature Walks that explore the biodiversity of the 230-acre Elings Park as part of a new collaboration between the Park and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and are led by Garden experts. Held is Saturday\, December 16\, from 9 to 10 a.m.\, it is led by Scot Pipkin\, the Garden’s Director of Education\, and Zach Philips\, Ph.D.\, Terrestrial Invertebrate Conservation Ecologist. \nThe walks are the start of as part of a larger collaborative effort between the two partners and the public to transform a section of the Park from invasive to native plants and document the effects. Future walks are scheduled\, once a month\, through the end of 2023. For more information\, visit www.SBBotanicGarden.org/calendar. \n“We invite the public to join us in recovering this portion of Elings Park so they can see first-hand the power of California’s native plants\,” says Denise Knapp\, Ph.D.\, the Garden’s Director of Conservation and Research. “Ultimately\, through this experience\, we hope that our community will leave inspired and begin transformations in backyards and landscapes across SB County and beyond.” \nElings Park opened in 1985 as the result of a community campaign to turn the former landfill into a public park. First encompassing 90 acres\, the Park expanded to 230 acres in 1994 with the purchase of an adjacent property. \nApproximately 75% of Elings Park is undeveloped. Nine miles of trails traverse shady oak groves and sunny\, ocean-facing hillsides covered with chaparral. Nonnative plants\, which have encroached on the natural landscapes\, have been the target of the Park’s recent efforts at habitat restoration. Over the past two years\, more than 250 California native oaks have been planted\, plus hundreds of native grasses and shrubs. For the past three springs\, a flock of sheep have been brought in for eco-friendly weed removal and fire prevention. \n“While Elings Park is just steps away from thousands of residences\, portions of it are still surprisingly wild\,” says Dean Noble\, Elings Park executive director. “Many people who enjoy our athletic facilities and cultural events have never visited our scenic South Bluffs. With the expertise of Santa Barbara Botanic Garden\, we can transform that landscape and encourage the next generation of community scientists.”

SUMMARY:“Tiny Taxa Doing Big Things” -- “Itty-bitty” Organisms Focus of SB Botanic Garden Symposium
DESCRIPTION:A day-long exploration of “itty-bitty” organisms and their often overlooked yet critical ecological roles is presented by Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. At “Tiny Taxa Doing Big Things\,” their 11th annual symposium\, seven scientists who study tiny plants and creatures each present a talk focused on their area of interest\, including lichen\, moss\, biocrust\, flies\, ants\, and parasites\, among others. \nThe talks reveal how a “small yet mighty” taxon may have an outsized influence on larger organisms\, aid in conservation efforts\, and support biodiversity on the planet. Also examined are the relationships between these diverse organisms and how cutting-edge technology is used to study them. The session culminates in a panel discussion about how to help conserve both the “tiny taxa” and the natural world at large. \n“Tiny Taxa Doing Big Things” is held at the Santa Barbara County Education Office at 4400 Cathedral Oaks Road\, Santa Barbara\, and is also streamed online. Advance registration is required for both in person and online attendance. In person admission is $40 for the public\, and $15 for Garden Members and students. A catered lunch is included. Attendance for the virtual-only is free\, but registration is required. For a complete schedule of speakers and topics and registration information\, please visit https://sbbotanicgarden.org/classes-events/symposium-2024/. \n“Sometimes in life\, it’s the little things that make all the difference. That’s true in nature\, too\,” said the Garden’s Director of Conservation\, Denise Knapp\, Ph.D. “Some of the biggest jobs on the planet are done by the tiniest of organisms. For example\, lichens build soil\, while bacteria\, algae\, mosses and more hold it together\, then bugs and fungi fertilize and recycle. This tiny world is sometimes beautiful\, sometimes bizarre\, sometimes disgusting – but always fascinating.” \nThe winner of this year’s Pritzlaff Conservation Award is world-renowned botanist\, lichenologist\, and philanthropist Shirley C. Tucker\, Ph.D. Unable to attend the Symposium\, she is honored at this year’s at this event for her many conservation achievements in California and around the world.

SUMMARY:Capturing and Recapturing A Day in the Life of Martin Luther King\, Jr. Photographs by esteemed photojournalist Santi Visalli
DESCRIPTION:In honor of the MLK Federal Holiday and Black History Month photojournalist Santi Visalli has quite a story to tell that is sure to resonate with the public today.  He was the photographer hired to document an event with Dr. King back on April 15\, 1967. The assignment was from an Italian magazine\, based in Milan\, now long out of print\, which only used two photos out of ten rolls of film he shot. The negatives were considered lost…until three years ago. All shot in black & white\, the event was a 1967 Vietnam War Protest in New York City outside the U.N. and there are poignant images of the nearly 125\,000 people at the march\, along with Dr. King addressing the crowd. Visalli hopes the photos will inform current generations about MLK’s advocacy for peace in addition to his lifelong pursuit for Civil Rights.   \nSPECIAL NOTE:  The exhibit will be available to schools and community organizations that may wish to visit the exhibit as an educational opportunity about the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.  Contact Helene Schneider\, curator to make any arrangements for group visits. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these photos in such an intimate space.  To see more of Santi’s work\, his website is: https://www.thefinestphotos.com/ \n  \nDonate to keep MLK’s legacy alive and help underwrite the events and programs of the MLKSB Committee.  https://mlksb.org/donate/ \n  \nThe Community Arts Workshop is space for artistic endeavors and exploration—a “blank canvas” for artists\, thinkers\, innovators\, and creators to develop ideas\, make connections\, and build community. \nThe mission of the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Committee of Santa Barbara is to foster positive relationships between many diverse groups in the Santa Barbara community and the surrounding areas; to sponsor programs and events which exemplify the teachings of Dr. King; and to observe\, and celebrate the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Holiday.       \nwww.sbcaw.org \nwww.MLKSB.org

SUMMARY:NatureTrack’s Family Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:This is a new program from NatureTrack — Family Days are for parents\, grandparents and children to enjoy nature games and activities together.  NatureTrack has been leading K-12 students on the trails and beaches since 2011.  Now it’s giving families a chance to experience the ‘outdoor classroom.’  Freedom Trax will be provided to people who use wheelchairs or need extra assistance on the trail at no charge.   \n  \nNatureTrack is a 501c3 nonprofit that provides outdoor docent-led field trips during the usual school day for Santa Barbara County children at no cost to the schools or students\, utilizing local trails and beaches throughout north and south county. NatureTrack’s mission is two-fold: to encourage students to embrace our natural world with respect and wonder\, inspiring them to be stewards of our natural resources\, and prepare school-aged students with the attitudes\, leadership skills\, and habits for lifelong learning. Recently NatureTrack expanded its mission of connecting kids to nature and is now connecting people who use wheelchairs of all ages to get out into nature using Freedom Trax. This device quickly changes a manual wheelchair into a battery powered\, all-terrain vehicle which can easily traverse sand and trails. Now NatureTrack wheelchair users of any age can enjoy natural areas previously inaccessible to them using Trax. https://naturetrack.org. NatureTrack is expanding its reach up to San Luis Obispo and down to Ventura County with the Trax program. Thanks go to the grantors including: UCSB’s Coastal Fund\, California State Coastal Conservancy\, Parks California ‘Route to Parks’ grant and the Coastal Resource Enhancement Fund. And now\, the California Access for All grant to expand the Freedom Tracks program up to North SB County.  \nhttps://naturetrack.org \n  \nPlease contact Abby@naturetrack.org for more information. SUMMARY:Miss Chase: Santa Barbara’s Trailblazer
DESCRIPTION:Join Simon Kerry for a presentation on his new publication\, Miss Chase: Santa Barbara’s Trailblazer\, chronicling the life\, prescience\, importance and legacy of Pearl Chase and her work in Santa Barbara and beyond. \nPearl Chase’s strength of personality\, maturity\, intelligence and leadership qualities formed the bedrock that enabled her to look outwards and achieve so much in her lifetime. \nIn his book\, Kerry traces Chase’s early life and collegiate years at UC Berkeley through to her return to Santa Barbara and indelible impact on both California and the nation. During a tumultuous period in American history in the early twentieth century\, she paved a way for not only the environmentalist movement but also for women’s influence in politics in the federal and local civic spheres. Her compassionate\, charitable nature extended to many cultural groups and causes\, evident in her vocal support of protecting the lands and customs of Native Americans in the southwest. \nThe talk asks the questions: What can we learn from Pearl\, her pioneering activities and the causes to which she tirelessly devoted herself? What is the enduring legacy of this remarkable woman? \nWednesday\, February 7 · 5:30 – 7pm PST\nSanta Barbara Historical Museum\n136 East de la Guerra Santa Barbara\, CA 93101\nGet tickets here

SUMMARY:The Legacy Of Pearl Chase
DESCRIPTION:Miss Chase: Santa Barbara’s Trailblazer’ Book Talk + Archive Discussion with Simon Kerry and Erin Graffy.\nIn partnership with Santa Barbara Beautiful\, join us for a special evening with British historian Simon Kerry as he discusses his new book\, ‘Miss Chase: Santa Barbara’s Trailblazer. Explore materials from  the The Community Development and Conservation Collection (CDCC)\, also known as the Pearl Chase Collection\, donated by Ms. Chase to UCSB Library’s Special Research Collection\, and used in Simon’s research. Moderated by local Santa Barbara historian and author\, Erin Graffy. \nPearl Chase (1888-1979) was a longtime activist in local community affairs\, as well as at the state and national level. As secretary and later chair of the Plans and Planting Committee\, she encouraged the city’s rebuilding in the graceful Spanish style after the 1925 Santa Barbara earthquake. She was the city’s unofficial ombudsman in matters of natural beauty and public welfare\, suggesting health and building codes and encouraging sign ordinances\, saving trees and creating and enhancing parks. Her legacy continues to live on at UCSB through her collection and awards established in her name. \nAbout the Author\nSimon Kerry was born in 1970 and is an author and business owner. He is also the 11th Earl of Kerry. He was educated at Eton College and at Cambridge University where he was awarded an MA in Archaeology. He has an MBA from Hult Ashridge\, an MSc in Rural Land and Business Management from the University of Reading and a PhD in History from the University of East Anglia. He is married and has one child. He lives at Bowood in Wiltshire. His first book Lansdowne: The Last Great Whig was published by Unicorn Publishing Group in 2017.

SUMMARY:All Inclusive Fun at Family Days with NatureTrack
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy what K-12 students have been enjoying since 2011 — discover the beaches and trails in Santa Barbara County led by knowledgeable and fun docents.  They will give everyone opportunities to explore nature in the ‘outdoor classroom’ where learning comes alive along with fun.  Finding the balance in one’s life includes nature as a vital element.  \n  \nNatureTrack’s Family Days field trips (https://naturetrack.org/news-events/)  are for parents\, grandparents and children to enjoy nature games and activities together.  Learn more about the Douglas Family Preserve (1/28)\, The Santa Ynez Botanic Garden (3/10) and El Capitan State Beach (5/8) on the three inaugural outings scheduled.  \n  \nThe benefits of nature are well-documented as being in nature really does make a difference. There’s even a name for not having nature in the mix of your life – “nature deficit disorder.” https://richardlouv.com/blog/what-is-nature-deficit-disorder.  Plan to get your dose of ‘Vitamin N’ with us on this field trip.  \n  \nFreedom Trax units will be provided to people who use wheelchairs or to those who might need extra assistance on the trails at no charge.  Please RSVP  to abby@naturetrack.org.  \n  \nAll this at no charge\, just like NatureTrack (NT) has been doing since its’ formation for schools!  Every Field Trip for students is free and 30\,000 students can’t be wrong – they’ve called the NT Field Trips the “best day ever.”  Just come ready to learn and have fun.   \n  \nInfo: abby@naturetrack.org  \n805 886 2047  \n  \nwww.naturetrack.org  \n  \nFamily Days:  \nhttps://naturetrack.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Revised-App-12_22_23-for-2024.pdf

SUMMARY:Join NatureTrack on AVILA BEACH\, Sunday March 17 Free Freedom Trax Devices For Wheelchair Users Will Be Available
DESCRIPTION:It’ll be your lucky day on Sunday\, March 17 from 11am to 2pm\, when NatureTrack will be at Avila State Beach to introduce those who use wheelchairs to the Freedom Trax devices at no cost to make a closer connection to nature.  These devices enable users to get up close to the waters’ edge and navigate the beach under your own control.
Learn more about the El Capitan State Beach (5/4) and the North Campus Open Space (7/14) on the remaining two inaugural outings scheduled. \n  \nEl Capitan State Beach \nMay 4\, 2024 \n10am – 2pm \n  \nInfo: abby@naturetrack.org  \n805 886 2047  \n  \nwww.naturetrack.org  \n  \nFamily Days:  \nhttps://naturetrack.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Revised-App-12_22_23-for-2024.pdf

SUMMARY:Author Susan Hayden in Conversation with Music Journalist Steve Hochman About Now You Are a Missing Person
DESCRIPTION:Susan Hayden’s lyrical memoir\, Now You Are a Missing Person (Moon Tide Press)\, features a collection of stories and poems exploring how love\, grief\, and the disappearing landscape of the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles have shaped her life. Join Susan Hayden in Montecito\, CA for a reading of Now You Are a Missing Person and a conversation with Steve Hochman at Tecolote Bookshop. The event will take place in person on May 4th at 3pm. \nHayden is best known for her award-winning monthly literary series\, Library Girl\, which has given a platform and a home to a diverse community of writers and musicians since 2009. Her debut memoir\, Now You Are a Missing Person was featured in the Los Angeles Public Library’s “Best of 2023: Fiction and Literature” list. It won the Poetry and Wild Card awards from the Southern California Book Festival\, as well as was a finalist in the Zibby Awards 2023 in Best Coming of Middle/Old Age.  \n  \nPRAISE FOR NOW YOU ARE A MISSING PERSON: \n“A remarkable book with a stunning sense of time and place . . . Now You Are a Missing Person lingers long in your heart\, along with the ghosts and heroes of Los Angeles’ recent past. They’re all alive here\, in Hayden’s vivid tales of life\, loss\, and the unexpected return of love just when you needed it most.” \n— Cameron Crowe  \n  \n“Imbued with the mercurial talents of the trickster and the poet\, Susan Hayden weaves threads of verse and prose together for this hybrid memoir spanning her childhood\, adolescence and adulthood … We see her flattened by grief\, but this book is ultimately a testament that loss is not the end of love—and that in its place\, new love\, including a newfound self-love\, can thrive.” \n― Cassandra Lane\, author of We Are Bridges \n  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: \nSusan Hayden is a multigenre writer. Her debut memoir\, Now You Are a Missing Person (Moon Tide Press\, 2023)\, a lyrical memoir in poems\, stories and fragments\, received a starred review from Kirkus. SUMMARY:Thru-hiking along the top of the Santa Ynez Mountains
DESCRIPTION:Thru-hiking along the top of the Santa Ynez Mountains \nFree Presentation with Q&A \nThursday\, May 16th\, 6:30PM\nMartin Luther King Jr. Room – Santa Barbara Eastside Branch Library\n1102 East Montecito St.\, Santa Barbara\, CA \nGrowing up in Goleta\, I would look up at the mountains and wonder what it was like up there\, imagining other worlds. I have hiked most of the local trails and looked out at the Santa Ynez Mountains almost every day of my life\, but never hiked from one end of the mountains to the other. \nYears ago I was part of a small group of people who wanted to restore the historic Ocean View Trail\, which ran along the top of the mountains behind Carpinteria to the Ventura River. That trail combined with the other existing routes made for a nearly continuous route along the top of the mountains. In 2017\, a growing group of dedicated volunteers reopened the Ocean View Trail from the end of Divide Peak OHV Road to the Ventura River Preserve. \nWhen I heard this section was passable all the way to Ojai\, I decided to thru-hike along the top of the Santa Ynez Mountains from Gaviota to the Ventura River. It took me 4 days to walk. \nThe views are absolutely incredible. There are always two views\, one of the interior mountains and one of the ocean and islands. And then there is you\, walking a line in between the worlds with your entire route in view in front of and behind you. \nDiane “Piper” Soini was born in Santa Barbara\, and grew up in Goleta. She is the author of the online hiking guide Santa Barbara Hikes\, www.santabarbarahikes.com; and has hiked the Pacific Crest Trail\, the Montana\, Idaho\, and Wyoming sections of the Continental Divide Trail\, the Arizona Trail\, and most of the trails in the southern Los Padres. \nThis free presentation is part of the Trail Talks series hosted by the Santa Barbara Public Library. \nThe next talk in the series is Thursday\, July 18th\, Natural History of the Channel lslands with Denise Knapp

SUMMARY:Talk and Book Signing with Architect Robert Ooley
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a presentation and book signing of the book The Butterfly Wood House by Robert Ooley\, FAIA. Robert has been a beloved Architect for the private and public sector on the Central Coast for over 25 years. He is an author\, playwright and the Director of Facilities for SBMA. \nFrank Lloyd Wright’s Butterfly Wood house opens the door into one of the architect’s last commissions of his Prairie Style and is the only example of that time in his career on the west coast of the United States. Located in the secluded enclave of Montecito\, California\, at the corner of Hot Springs and Summit Roads is this 4\,500-square-foot redwood treasure. \nThis story will weave together the family that wanted a coastal retreat\, a world-renowned embattled architect\, and the house they made together.
