SUMMARY:Join NatureTrack on AVILA BEACH\, Sunday March 17 Free Freedom Trax Devices For Wheelchair Users Will Be Available
DESCRIPTION:It’ll be your lucky day on Sunday\, March 17 from 11am to 2pm\, when NatureTrack will be at Avila State Beach to introduce those who use wheelchairs to the Freedom Trax devices at no cost to make a closer connection to nature.  These devices enable users to get up close to the waters’ edge and navigate the beach under your own control. Experience what people have consistently remarked… ‘This is a real game changer!” \n  \nNatureTrack will have several Freedom Trax devices available for wheelchair users to use on a first-come\, first-served basis. We do ask for RSVPs to be able to accommodate people in wheelchairs more efficiently. SUMMARY:Author Susan Hayden in Conversation with Music Journalist Steve Hochman About Now You Are a Missing Person
DESCRIPTION:Susan Hayden’s lyrical memoir\, Now You Are a Missing Person (Moon Tide Press)\, features a collection of stories and poems exploring how love\, grief\, and the disappearing landscape of the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles have shaped her life. Join Susan Hayden in Montecito\, CA for a reading of Now You Are a Missing Person and a conversation with Steve Hochman at Tecolote Bookshop. The event will take place in person on May 4th at 3pm. \nHayden is best known for her award-winning monthly literary series\, Library Girl\, which has given a platform and a home to a diverse community of writers and musicians since 2009. Her debut memoir\, Now You Are a Missing Person was featured in the Los Angeles Public Library’s “Best of 2023: Fiction and Literature” list. It won the Poetry and Wild Card awards from the Southern California Book Festival\, as well as was a finalist in the Zibby Awards 2023 in Best Coming of Middle/Old Age.  \n  \nPRAISE FOR NOW YOU ARE A MISSING PERSON: \n“A remarkable book with a stunning sense of time and place . . . Now You Are a Missing Person lingers long in your heart\, along with the ghosts and heroes of Los Angeles’ recent past. They’re all alive here\, in Hayden’s vivid tales of life\, loss\, and the unexpected return of love just when you needed it most.” \n— Cameron Crowe  \n  \n“Imbued with the mercurial talents of the trickster and the poet\, Susan Hayden weaves threads of verse and prose together for this hybrid memoir spanning her childhood\, adolescence and adulthood … We see her flattened by grief\, but this book is ultimately a testament that loss is not the end of love—and that in its place\, new love\, including a newfound self-love\, can thrive.” \n― Cassandra Lane\, author of We Are Bridges \n  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: \nSusan Hayden is a multigenre writer. Her debut memoir\, Now You Are a Missing Person (Moon Tide Press\, 2023)\, a lyrical memoir in poems\, stories and fragments\, received a starred review from Kirkus. It was named in the Best of 2023 by the Los Angeles Public Library\, “the best books of the year as selected by Los Angeles Public Library staff.” Hayden’s book was a Finalist in The Zibby Awards 2023 in the Best Coming of Middle/Old Age category\, awarded by Zibby Owens. Her plays have been performed live on KPFK’s Pacifica Performance Showcase and produced across Los Angeles. Her poems and stories have been published in the anthologies Beat Not Beat (Moon Tide Press)\, The Black Body (Seven Stories Press)\, Los Angeles In the 1970s/Weird Scenes Inside the Goldmine (Rare Bird Books) and elsewhere. Hayden is the creator and producer of Library Girl\, a monthly literary series now in its 15th year at Ruskin Group Theatre. In 2015\, she was presented with the Artist in the Community/Bruria Finkel Award from the Santa Monica Arts Foundation for her significant contributions to the energetic discourse within Santa Monica’s arts community. Visit Susan Hayden’s website at www.susanhayden.com. \n  \nMusic journalist Steve Hochman grew up in Santa Barbara. DESCRIPTION:Thru-hiking along the top of the Santa Ynez Mountains \nFree Presentation with Q&A \nThursday\, May 16th\, 6:30PM\nMartin Luther King Jr. Room – Santa Barbara Eastside Branch Library\n1102 East Montecito St.\, Santa Barbara\, CA \nGrowing up in Goleta\, I would look up at the mountains and wonder what it was like up there\, imagining other worlds. I have hiked most of the local trails and looked out at the Santa Ynez Mountains almost every day of my life\, but never hiked from one end of the mountains to the other. \nYears ago I was part of a small group of people who wanted to restore the historic Ocean View Trail\, which ran along the top of the mountains behind Carpinteria to the Ventura River. That trail combined with the other existing routes made for a nearly continuous route along the top of the mountains. In 2017\, a growing group of dedicated volunteers reopened the Ocean View Trail from the end of Divide Peak OHV Road to the Ventura River Preserve. \nWhen I heard this section was passable all the way to Ojai\, I decided to thru-hike along the top of the Santa Ynez Mountains from Gaviota to the Ventura River. It took me 4 days to walk. \nThe views are absolutely incredible. There are always two views\, one of the interior mountains and one of the ocean and islands. And then there is you\, walking a line in between the worlds with your entire route in view in front of and behind you. \nDiane “Piper” Soini was born in Santa Barbara\, and grew up in Goleta. She is the author of the online hiking guide Santa Barbara Hikes\, www.santabarbarahikes.com; and has hiked the Pacific Crest Trail\, the Montana\, Idaho\, and Wyoming sections of the Continental Divide Trail\, the Arizona Trail\, and most of the trails in the southern Los Padres. \nThis free presentation is part of the Trail Talks series hosted by the Santa Barbara Public Library. \nThe next talk in the series is Thursday\, July 18th\, Natural History of the Channel lslands with Denise Knapp

SUMMARY:Talk and Book Signing with Architect Robert Ooley
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a presentation and book signing of the book The Butterfly Wood House by Robert Ooley\, FAIA. Robert has been a beloved Architect for the private and public sector on the Central Coast for over 25 years. He is an author\, playwright and the Director of Facilities for SBMA. \nFrank Lloyd Wright’s Butterfly Wood house opens the door into one of the architect’s last commissions of his Prairie Style and is the only example of that time in his career on the west coast of the United States. Located in the secluded enclave of Montecito\, California\, at the corner of Hot Springs and Summit Roads is this 4\,500-square-foot redwood treasure. \nThis story will weave together the family that wanted a coastal retreat\, a world-renowned embattled architect\, and the house they made together.

SUMMARY:Join NatureTrack on WEST BEACH\, Sunday June 23 Free Freedom Trax Devices For Wheelchair Users Will Be Available
DESCRIPTION:(Santa Barbara) Smack dab in the middle of all the Santa Barbara beaches is West Beach. Steps away from dozens of hotels with a majestic view looking out at the Channel Islands\, the ocean\, the sandspit\, the Breakwater and the shorebirds.  You are invited to come see and try the Freedom Trax devices in action. Join NatureTrack on Sunday\, June 23rd from 11am to 2pm\, when we will be at West Beach to introduce those who use wheelchairs to the Freedom Trax devices at no cost to make a closer connection to nature.  These devices enable users to get up close to the waters’ edge and navigate the beach under your own control. Dry or wet sand – doesn’t matter. An off-road revelation for anyone who uses a wheelchair or may have an equilibrium issue. Anywhere there’s uneven ground this device lets you feel as if you are on a level playing field\, so to speak.  It’s a game changer! \nNatureTrack will have several Freedom Trax devices available for wheelchair users to use on a first-come\, first-served basis. We do ask for RSVPs to be able to accommodate people in wheelchairs more efficiently. This apparatus can quickly and easily convert a manual wheelchair into a battery-powered\, all-terrain vehicle allowing those users to traverse beach sand and trails independently.  This unit puts the ‘free’ in freedom.  \nThis is a great opportunity to try these firsthand and get out into nature on the beach.  The RSVP form will give us the chance to have a Freedom Trax device ready for you and your chair. NatureTrack will also have two manual wheelchairs available for transfer should your wheelchair not fit on the device.  Look for our pop-up  banner at the intersection where Cabrillo Blvd. and Chapala Street meet.  \nIf your hotel management is interested in knowing more about the NatureTrack Freedom Trax loan program\, just give us a call. (805)886-2047 or email Sue@naturetrack.org  \nNatureTrack connecting people to nature\, every day\, every way. \n  \n411: \n6.23.24 from 11am – 2pm at  West Beach\, where Cabrillo Blvd. and Chapala St. meet.  Look for our pop-up bubble banner at the intersection where Cabrillo Blvd. and Chapala Street meet.  Park at the Main Harbor Parking Lot.\, Once parked\, walk towards Sterns Wharf and look for our Bubble Banner.  \n  \nRSVP: (805)886-2047  abby@naturetrack.org  \nNatureTrack is a 501c3 nonprofit that provides outdoor docent-led field trips during the usual school day for Santa Barbara County children at no cost to the schools or students\, utilizing local trails and beaches throughout north and south county. NatureTrack’s mission is two-fold: to encourage students to embrace our natural world with respect and wonder\, inspiring them to be stewards of our natural resources\, and prepare school-aged students with the attitudes\, leadership skills\, and habits for lifelong learning.  \nNatureTrack expanded its mission of connecting kids to nature and is now connecting people who use wheelchairs of all ages to get out into nature using Freedom Trax. This device quickly changes a manual wheelchair into a battery powered\, all-terrain vehicle which can easily traverse sand and trails. Now NatureTrack wheelchair users of any age can enjoy natural areas previously inaccessible to them using Trax. https://naturetrack.org. NatureTrack is expanding its reach up to San Luis Obispo and down to Ventura County with the Trax program. Thanks go to the grantors including: UCSB’s Coastal Fund\, California State Coastal Conservancy\, Parks California ‘Route to Parks’ grant and the Coastal Resource Enhancement Fund.
