SUMMARY:The Birds and the Bees and More: Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:The California Nature Art Museum is excited to bring the important topic of pollinators to its gallery featuring original art by Ava Roth\, Elizabeth Weber\, Susan McDonnell\, and Cynthia James. The exhibition will be available to the public from March 2\, 2024\, through September 2\, 2024. \nEach artist brings a unique perspective to their pollinating subjects. For instance\, artist Ava Roth works with honeybees to produce artworks using bee-created honeycombs. Susan Mcdonnell is producing new paintings showcasing lesser-known pollinators such as bats and butterflies. Elizabeth Weber’s photos spotlight dwindling monarch butterfly populations\, aiming to encourage the planting of native species. And finally\, Cynthia James is creating art that reflects the risks faced by pollinators like bees due to pesticides.  \nWe are delighted to also be collaborating with the Cheadle Center For Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration at UC Santa Barbara. The Cheadle Center’s contribution is focused on native bees\, including high-resolution images of rare\, local bees from the UCSB Natural History Collection and images of bees visiting flowers of native plants for an up-close look at their beauty and biodiversity. Cheadle Center Director\, Katja Seltmann\, a bee biologist\, will present a performative discussion and Q&A about bee natural history that includes bees for viewing under the microscope and music. Additional programming will be announced soon.

SUMMARY:“Here Comes the Sun: Celebrating 50 Years of Santa Barbara Summer Solstice”
DESCRIPTION:Every promotional poster heralding Santa Barbara’s unique Summer Solstice Celebration for the past 50 years and hundreds of photographs documenting its early years are among the many items in a new exhibit “Here Comes the Sun: Celebrating 50 Years of Santa Barbara Summer Solstice” on view at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum through June 27. \nIn just 50 years\, a small caravan of artists and mimes organized by Michael Gonzales has grown to a three-day extravaganza of street performance\, dance\, “people-powered” floats\, and live music. The Summer Solstice Parade now features more than 1\,000 participants and is watched by thousands more. \nThe Museum holds a complete collection of official Solstice posters\, which are a mix of works by well-known professional and talented amateur artists\, and were chosen by competition each year. Arranged chronologically\, some are signed by the artists. An interactive digital portal allows visitors to read about each poster and artist. \nIn the museum’s large Sala\, the focus is on the celebration’s expansion from its inception in 1974 with hundreds of historic images of the artists working in preparation\, the parade itself\, and associated celebrations. A 2018 video about Solstice by Justin Gunn\, current president of the Summer Solstice Celebration\, is also running on a loop. \nThe largest collection of images was contributed by photographer Nell Campbell who began photographing Summer Solstice in 1977. Campbell came to Santa Barbara in 1969 to attend the Brooks Institute of Photography\, and became a visual documentarian\, especially known for her images of civic protests. \nIn addition to the poster and photo displays\, the exhibit features a 9-foot-tall wearable “walking puppet” and several puppet heads and masks on loan from the Summer Solstice Celebration\, along with items from the Museum’s collection of colorful handmade banners and masks. Two paintings by the event’s founder Michael Gonzales are on loan from the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts & Culture. Each was showcased in the annual posters\, one in 1981 (the last year he directed the parade) and another in 1982. \nSegments from oral histories recorded by early Summer Solstice organizers and artists can be accessed by guests via QR codes. The interviews were recorded in 2023 as part of Solstice’s Legacy Project as a way to preserve the voices of Summer Solstice participants throughout the celebration’s 50-year history. \nThis year’s parade is Saturday\, June 22\, and the associated festival in Alameda Park is Friday through Sunday\, June 21-23. SUMMARY:Join NatureTrack on WEST BEACH\, Sunday June 23 Free Freedom Trax Devices For Wheelchair Users Will Be Available
DESCRIPTION:(Santa Barbara) Smack dab in the middle of all the Santa Barbara beaches is West Beach. Steps away from dozens of hotels with a majestic view looking out at the Channel Islands\, the ocean\, the sandspit\, the Breakwater and the shorebirds.  You are invited to come see and try the Freedom Trax devices in action. Join NatureTrack on Sunday\, June 23rd from 11am to 2pm\, when we will be at West Beach to introduce those who use wheelchairs to the Freedom Trax devices at no cost to make a closer connection to nature.  These devices enable users to get up close to the waters’ edge and navigate the beach under your own control. Dry or wet sand – doesn’t matter. An off-road revelation for anyone who uses a wheelchair or may have an equilibrium issue. Anywhere there’s uneven ground this device lets you feel as if you are on a level playing field\, so to speak.  It’s a game changer! \nNatureTrack will have several Freedom Trax devices available for wheelchair users to use on a first-come\, first-served basis. We do ask for RSVPs to be able to accommodate people in wheelchairs more efficiently. This apparatus can quickly and easily convert a manual wheelchair into a battery-powered\, all-terrain vehicle allowing those users to traverse beach sand and trails independently.  This unit puts the ‘free’ in freedom.  \nThis is a great opportunity to try these firsthand and get out into nature on the beach.  The RSVP form will give us the chance to have a Freedom Trax device ready for you and your chair. NatureTrack will also have two manual wheelchairs available for transfer should your wheelchair not fit on the device.  Look for our pop-up  banner at the intersection where Cabrillo Blvd. and Chapala Street meet.  \nIf your hotel management is interested in knowing more about the NatureTrack Freedom Trax loan program\, just give us a call. (805)886-2047 or email Sue@naturetrack.org  \nNatureTrack connecting people to nature\, every day\, every way. \n  \n411: \n6.23.24 from 11am – 2pm at  West Beach\, where Cabrillo Blvd. and Chapala St. meet.  Look for our pop-up bubble banner at the intersection where Cabrillo Blvd. and Chapala Street meet.  Park at the Main Harbor Parking Lot.\, Once parked\, walk towards Sterns Wharf and look for our Bubble Banner.  \n  \nRSVP: (805)886-2047  abby@naturetrack.org  \nNatureTrack is a 501c3 nonprofit that provides outdoor docent-led field trips during the usual school day for Santa Barbara County children at no cost to the schools or students\, utilizing local trails and beaches throughout north and south county. NatureTrack’s mission is two-fold: to encourage students to embrace our natural world with respect and wonder\, inspiring them to be stewards of our natural resources\, and prepare school-aged students with the attitudes\, leadership skills\, and habits for lifelong learning.  \nNatureTrack expanded its mission of connecting kids to nature and is now connecting people who use wheelchairs of all ages to get out into nature using Freedom Trax. This device quickly changes a manual wheelchair into a battery powered\, all-terrain vehicle which can easily traverse sand and trails. Now NatureTrack wheelchair users of any age can enjoy natural areas previously inaccessible to them using Trax. https://naturetrack.org. NatureTrack is expanding its reach up to San Luis Obispo and down to Ventura County with the Trax program. Thanks go to the grantors including: UCSB’s Coastal Fund\, California State Coastal Conservancy\, Parks California ‘Route to Parks’ grant and the Coastal Resource Enhancement Fund. And now\, the California Access for All grant to expand the Freedom Tracks program up to North SB County. \n  \nhttps://NatureTrack.org    www.McFaddenPR.com \n  \nLook for our Pop-Up banner! \n  \nRSVP form Trax Beach Trips 2024 on Google Docs https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdZ0Lu5faVcM1Ks9Do-GUlk-ck5N_QMnVNippO8If5dv10mKg/viewform \nGoogle Maps:  https://www.google.com/maps/place/West+Beach/@34.4095989\,-119.6953649\,16z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x80e9138b63604181:0x66b0034bd16d7983!8m2!3d34.4103348!4d119.6901125!16s%2Fm%2F02vvxw7?entry=ttu
