SUMMARY:Five Secrets of Literary Journalism
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning PEN literary journalist Kathleen Sharp will discuss literary journalism\, a popular form of telling true stories\, at the next AWC-SB meeting scheduled for March 8\, 5:30 to 7 p.m.\, at Work Zones\, 351 Paseo Nuevo\, Santa Barbara. Using examples from her own work for the New York Times\, NPR\, and TV platforms\, she’ll reveal the elements that make a story great and that\, ideally\, deliver hope and sometimes justice. \nAs a contributor to ProPublica\, Kathleen is currently writing about how looted art gets into public museums. Her groundbreaking story about a California rainmaker (whose case was the plot for the movie Erin Brockovich) will soon be featured in CNBC’s hit series American Greed. She’s also working with the producers of the HBO hit Tokyo Vice to adapt her bestselling book\, Mr. and Mrs. Hollywood (Carroll & Graf)\, into a limited series – while writing her next book\, a true tale about a teenage POW who won the Olympics for his captors. \nREGISTER: https://members.womcom.org/content.aspx?page_id=4008&club_id=903060&item_id=1909225

SUMMARY:From Scene to Scene: The Multiple Bruce Conners in the Art Underground
DESCRIPTION:Curator’s Choice Lecture with Thomas Crow\, Rosalie Solow Professor of Modern Art\, Institute of Fine Arts\, New York University \nIt is rare for one artist to play a key role in more than one creative community. But the film and assemblage master Bruce Conner made a capital difference in at least three\, from his start in the late 1950s through the late 1970s. His shapeshifting career affords insight into the bohemian enclaves of San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, and Boston\, as he went about setting new standards in all of his varied media. At the same time\, his encounters with the luminaries of the American counterculture\, from Timothy Leary to Dennis Hopper\, present a portrait of the era. \n\nMary Craig Auditorium\n\n\n\nFree

SUMMARY:SANTA BARBARA ELDERS TO PROTEST OVER CLIMATE CHANGE FUNDING BY BANKS AS PART OF NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nMEDIA ADVISORY \n  \nSANTA BARBARA ELDERS TO PROTEST OVER CLIMATE CHANGE FUNDING BY BANKS AS PART OF NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION \n  \nWHAT: Seniors of Santa Barbara will hold a rally and march to three different banks in downtown Santa Barbara as part of a national day of action across the US to pressure the major banks to stop financing the expansion of the fossil fuel industry. These banks are being put on notice that the seniors in this country will no longer allow their savings and investment dollars to be used for the funding of BIG OIL.  This rally is among the 85 events in over half the US states taking place across the country. The day is being organized by Third Act\, a group for climate activists over 60 years\, with more than 50 local and national partners. The local rally and march will be co-hosted by the Fearless Grandmothers of Santa Barbara. \n  \nWHEN: 12:00 – 2: 00 pm\, March 21\, 2023 \n  \nWHERE: Rally begins at the corner of State and Anapamu\, SB.  We will then march to Chase\, Wells Fargo and Bank of America locations. \n  \nMEDIA CONTACT: Maureen Ellenberger\, SoCal Third Act and Fearless Grandmothers of SB at 978.505.5736\, melle2007@ gmail.com \n  \nwww.thirdact.org \nwww.thirdact.org/working-groups/southern-california \nwww.fearlessgrandmothersSB.org \n  \nBACKGROUND \n  \nThe national day of action against banks over climate change comes ahead of investor resolutions at their annual general meetings next month to pressure them to stop funding climate chaos. \nThe top four fossil fuel financing banks are JP Morgan Chase\, Citi\, Bank of America and Wells Fargo\, pumping over one quarter of the $4.6 trillion total financing for fossil fuels by the top 60 global banks between 2016 and 2021. \n  \nAnd given the banking events of the weekend\, it’s more important than ever. The effect of these bank failures will be to concentrate even more money and power in the huge money center banks. Our four targets–Chase\, Citi\, wells-Fargo and Bank of America–were already closing in on fifty percent of total deposits; they are a regime of money. \nGiven that power\, we have to demand that they take a constructive role in solving the biggest crisis humanity has ever faced–or at least that they stop making it worse. That’s what 32123 is all about! \nThousands and thousands of customers and potential customers have pledged to move their money out of these banks if the banks won’t move their investments out of fossil fuels. \nThe rally is being held as the County of Santa Barbara grapples with recent debates on ExxonMobil is looking to rebuild and reopen two pipelines formerly owned by Plains All America that were responsible for the 2015 Refugio Oil Spill damaging not only the Gaviota Coast but spilling into the Santa Barbara Channel.
