SUMMARY:Art in Service of the Land
DESCRIPTION:This collaborative exhibition celebrates the intersection of art and environmental stewardship\, highlighting the efforts of the Oak Group\, the UCSB Cheadle Center for Biodiversity & Ecological Restoration\, and Coal Oil Point Reserve to conserve the Devereux Slough. Art in Service of the Land invites viewers to explore how art documents\, interprets\, and amplifies the ongoing work of conservation\, revealing the beauty and complexity of the North Campus Open Space (NCOS) and inspiring engagement with our local environment. \nThis exhibition was curated and cosponsored by the Oak Group and the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration\, in collaboration with UCSB Library staff. \nThe Oak Group is one of the first artist groups in the U.S. to combine creativity with conservation. Since 1986\, Oak Group artists have exhibited artworks painted on location to raise awareness and funds for open spaces\, generating over $3 million in sales to support the preservation of lands for wildlife\, recreation\, ranching\, and farming. The group includes 25 active members and has presented more than 100 exhibitions benefiting over 20 conservation organizations. \nThe Cheadle Center manages over 340 acres of open space between Ellwood Mesa and Goleta Slough\, supporting habitat conservation\, upland and wetland restoration\, and sustainable stormwater management. SUMMARY:Carpinteria Improv: Tuesday Nights
DESCRIPTION:This is a weekly improv workshop open to everyone – whether you’ve never set foot on a stage or you’ve been making things up for years. We meet\, we play\, we fail spectacularly\, and occasionally something genuinely surprising happens. \nImprov isn’t about being funny. It’s about listening\, reacting\, and trusting the people around you. The games we play build those muscles. Some nights you’ll be rowing an imaginary boat. Other nights you’ll be a talking lamp. You won’t know until you get there. \nWhat to expect:\nWe start with warm-ups to get everyone out of their heads and into the room. Then we move into scene work and games – some for pairs\, some for small groups\, some for everyone at once. The evening ends with the whole group playing together. \nNo preparation required. No lines to memorize. Just show up willing to try. \nAll skill levels welcome. Beginners encouraged. Mistakes celebrated.

SUMMARY:The Chocolate Experience: Factory Tour and Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Twenty-Four Blackbirds is excited to introduce The Chocolate Experience: Factory Tour and Tasting! Combining the best elements of our previous Behind the Scenes and In-Depth tours\, this new and improved event is for someone with a high interest in single-origin dark chocolate\, where it comes from\, how it’s processed and the technicalities behind making shiny\, lusciously smooth chocolate from what starts as a small\, bitter bean. You’ll get to taste chocolate at every stage\, from bean to bar (including sampling through all our single origin dark chocolate bars)\, as well as other products we make\, like caramel and chocolate-covered espresso beans. We’ll describe the stages of roasting\, sorting\, refining and tempering. You’ll come away having tasted a lot of chocolate and having learned more about our specialty!

SUMMARY:AI in Action: Simon Billinge & Nina Miolane
DESCRIPTION:Register Now\nJoin us for the third event in UCSB Library’s new speaker series\, AI in Action Conversations with UCSB Researchers. The event features short presentations by Simon Billinge (California NanoSystems Institute) and Nina Miolane (REAL AI for Science) on innovative applications of AI in their research\, followed by a 30-minute moderated discussion on broader trends\, challenges\, and ethical considerations. \nIn his presentation titled “LLM Chatbots: Omniscient Super-Intelligence or Just BS?\,” Billinge will discuss how AI powered virtual assistants have gone from being the butt of jokes due to their dysfunction\, to engendering fear that they will achieve super-intelligence and take over and destroy the human race\, in a remarkably short time. Billinge will also briefly describe some ways in which AI is being used in scientific research at the California NanoSystems Institute and in materials science in general. \nIn her presentation titled “AI-Powered Science and the Digital Twin Revolution\,” Miolane will discuss how through REAL AI\, she uses her model to develop brain digital twins to forecast brain health and personalize care\, with a special focus on modeling changes in women’s brains across pregnancy\, menopause\, and aging. \nThis event may be photographed or recorded. \nAdvance registration is recommended as space is limited. \nAbout the Speakers\nDr. Simon Billinge is Professor of Materials Science and Director of the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) at UC Santa Barbara. He has more than 25 years of experience developing and applying techniques to study local structure in materials using x-ray\, neutron and electron diffraction including the development of novel data analysis methods including graph theoretic\, artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches. Prior to joining UCSB in 2026\, he was a faculty member at Michigan State University and Columbia University. He also held a joint position of Physicist at Brookhaven National Laboratory between 2008 and 2022. Billinge has published more than 350 papers in scholarly journals. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the Neutron Scattering Society of America\, a former Fulbright and Sloan fellow and has earned a number of awards including\, in 2025\, the Gregori Aminoff prize of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences\, and the Innovation in Materials Characterization Award of the Materials Research Society. \nDr. Nina Miolane is an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UC Santa Barbara\, where she co-directs REAL AI for Science and the AI Core of the Bowers Women’s Brain Health Initiative. She also leads the Geometric Intelligence Lab\, where her team studies how brains and machines make sense of the world and make decisions. They use ideas from mathematics\, neuroscience\, and AI to understand patterns in neuronal activity across biological and artificial brains and build smarter\, more efficient AI systems. \nAbout AI in Action\nAI in Action: Conversations with UCSB Researchers aims to foster an open\, interdisciplinary community exploring how AI can deepen understanding\, expand access to knowledge\, and inspire new forms of scholarship. The speaker series showcases how UC Santa Barbara researchers are using innovative applications of AI\, from accelerating materials science and environmental modeling to uncovering new insights in language\, art\, and history. Each session includes presentations by UCSB faculty and research teams on how AI tools and methods are shaping their work\, followed by discussion on broader trends\, challenges\, and ethical considerations. \nAI in Action is co-led by UCSB Library and the UCSB AI Community of Practice (CoP)\, AI for Research Special Interest Group\, with support from the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost\, Office of Research\, Office of Teaching and Learning\, Marine Science Institute\, and National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis. \nImage Description: Graphic containing the title of the event and images of the two speakers for this event.

These lands form a mosaic of oak woodland\, coastal sage scrub\, grassland\, and wetland ecosystems that sustain high regional biodiversity. The Center also provides critical academic opportunities for UCSB students\, including internships\, field courses\, and independent projects supported by the Research and Monitoring Mentorship Program.
