SUMMARY:From Scene to Scene: The Multiple Bruce Conners in the Art Underground
DESCRIPTION:Curator’s Choice Lecture with Thomas Crow\, Rosalie Solow Professor of Modern Art\, Institute of Fine Arts\, New York University \nIt is rare for one artist to play a key role in more than one creative community. But the film and assemblage master Bruce Conner made a capital difference in at least three\, from his start in the late 1950s through the late 1970s. His shapeshifting career affords insight into the bohemian enclaves of San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, and Boston\, as he went about setting new standards in all of his varied media. At the same time\, his encounters with the luminaries of the American counterculture\, from Timothy Leary to Dennis Hopper\, present a portrait of the era. \n\nMary Craig Auditorium\n\n\n\nFree

SUMMARY:SANTA BARBARA ELDERS TO PROTEST OVER CLIMATE CHANGE FUNDING BY BANKS AS PART OF NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nMEDIA ADVISORY \n  \nSANTA BARBARA ELDERS TO PROTEST OVER CLIMATE CHANGE FUNDING BY BANKS AS PART OF NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION \n  \nWHAT: Seniors of Santa Barbara will hold a rally and march to three different banks in downtown Santa Barbara as part of a national day of action across the US to pressure the major banks to stop financing the expansion of the fossil fuel industry. These banks are being put on notice that the seniors in this country will no longer allow their savings and investment dollars to be used for the funding of BIG OIL.  This rally is among the 85 events in over half the US states taking place across the country. The day is being organized by Third Act\, a group for climate activists over 60 years\, with more than 50 local and national partners. The local rally and march will be co-hosted by the Fearless Grandmothers of Santa Barbara. \n  \nWHEN: 12:00 – 2: 00 pm\, March 21\, 2023 \n  \nWHERE: Rally begins at the corner of State and Anapamu\, SB.  We will then march to Chase\, Wells Fargo and Bank of America locations. \n  \nMEDIA CONTACT: Maureen Ellenberger\, SoCal Third Act and Fearless Grandmothers of SB at 978.505.5736\, melle2007@ gmail.com \n  \nwww.thirdact.org \nwww.thirdact.org/working-groups/southern-california \nwww.fearlessgrandmothersSB.org \n  \nBACKGROUND \n  \nThe national day of action against banks over climate change comes ahead of investor resolutions at their annual general meetings next month to pressure them to stop funding climate chaos. \nThe top four fossil fuel financing banks are JP Morgan Chase\, Citi\, Bank of America and Wells Fargo\, pumping over one quarter of the $4.6 trillion total financing for fossil fuels by the top 60 global banks between 2016 and 2021. \n  \nAnd given the banking events of the weekend\, it’s more important than ever. The effect of these bank failures will be to concentrate even more money and power in the huge money center banks. Our four targets–Chase\, Citi\, wells-Fargo and Bank of America–were already closing in on fifty percent of total deposits; they are a regime of money. \nGiven that power\, we have to demand that they take a constructive role in solving the biggest crisis humanity has ever faced–or at least that they stop making it worse. That’s what 32123 is all about! \nThousands and thousands of customers and potential customers have pledged to move their money out of these banks if the banks won’t move their investments out of fossil fuels. \nThe rally is being held as the County of Santa Barbara grapples with recent debates on ExxonMobil is looking to rebuild and reopen two pipelines formerly owned by Plains All America that were responsible for the 2015 Refugio Oil Spill damaging not only the Gaviota Coast but spilling into the Santa Barbara Channel.

SUMMARY:CEC Webinar: Prescribed Grazing for Ecological and Wildfire Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder what those four-legged herbivores are doing in your neighborhood\, along your favorite walking trail\, or dotting the hillsides on your daily commute? As wildfires in California have increased in frequency and intensity\, prescribed or planned grazing of sheep\, goats\, and other ruminant animals is being utilized to manage the overgrowth of fine\, dry brush that adds fuel to these fires – and their climate impacts. \nJoin the Community Environmental Council’s webinar to learn about new legislation recently introduced by Senator Monique Limón that will enhance wildfire mitigation efforts by expanding statewide prescribed grazing efforts. Hear from local rangeland contractors\, conservationists\, and policymakers about the need to scale this important ecological and fire resilience tool – and how Senate Bill 675 will ensure that prescribed grazing is better integrated into existing statewide wildfire resilience programs and strategies.  Spanish interpretation will be available at the event. SUMMARY:Mike Casey
DESCRIPTION:Mike Casey is a melody poet polymath. The story-telling songwriter\, producer\, & sonic alchemist is a multi-talented force on the saxophone.\n\n\nA unique group not only in their approach but in instrumentation\, Mike Casey Trio is an experience to behold. The absence of guitar/piano allows the band a rare sound: earthy\, yet mysterious – incorporating ingredients of funk\, R&B\, hip hop & music from around the world into their own definition of jazz fusion. This trio demands the audiences’ attention – whether bringing down the house with story based originals or captivating listeners with genre-bending re-imaginations of songs by Soundgarden\, Queen\, Daniel Caesar\, H.E.R. & even Jay-Z. In 2020\, the band was 1 of 5 international finalists in the largest ensemble based competition in jazz – the DC Jazz Festival’s “DC Jazz Prix”.\n \n \nWith over 20 million streams since 2017\, Mike has had overwhelming support from The Huffington Post\, BBC\, NPR Morning Edition\, NPR Jazz Night in America\, Forbes\, Music Ally\, Downbeat\, Jazziz\, JazzTimes\, as the cover of Spotify’s “State of Jazz” & in Spotify’s “Best Jazz of 2020 + 2021” lists\, Worldwide FM\, NTS\, Dublab\, Jazz FM\, Jazz in Europe\, Radio Primavera Sound\, Sirius XM\, on jazz icon Sonny Rollins’s social media (the pioneer of the sax/bass/drums format)\, & much more.\n \n \nNotable past shows include the Kennedy Center\, World Cafe Live downstairs opening for Makaya McCraven\, BRIC Jazz Fest\, MondoNYC\, Yale\, Side Door Jazz Club\, Philadelphia Museum of Art\, APAP\, and some of Europe’s top jazz venues: Jamboree\, Le Jam\, Auditori Nacional\, Ool Ya Kool\, and Jimmy Glass.

SUMMARY:Obsolescence: The Sculpture of Ed & Nancy Kienholz
DESCRIPTION:A lecture given by James Glisson\, Curator of Contemporary Art\, held in conjunction with the exhibition “Scenes from a Marriage: Ed & Nancy Kienholz” (Jan. 29 – May 21\, 2023) \nWe live in a world of disposable and mostly forgettable manufactured objects. Behind every gleaming big box retail store is a dumpster waiting to welcome what is on the shelves inside. From cast offs and supposed junk\, Ed Kienholz (1927-1994) and Nancy Reddin Kienholz (1943-2019) made sculptures full of incendiary commentary about American life during the 20th century.  They liked swap meets\, flea markets\, and had Ed lived longer he would have surely trawled Ebay (founded 1995).  These artists often show us the isolation\, loneliness\, and cruelty that humans inflict on each other\, but they also force a recognition of the mountains of stuff springing up around us and the emptiness at the core of a one-and-done consumer society. \n\nMary Craig Auditorium\n\n\n\nFree Students and Museum Circle Members\n$10 SBMA Members\n$15 Non-Members
