DESCRIPTION:This free concert features student composers\, performers\, and writers from a workshop led by Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and composer Ted Nash who joins them on stage. Responding in part to artist Joan Tanner’s unorthodox use of materials and inspired by Nash’s original composition first performed with Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\, these young artists explore the idea of transformation\, both personal and collective\, bringing word and music together in this exuberant community-sourced celebration of the expressive and empathetic power of art. \nThe backdrop for this performance will be created by students ages 12–14 enrolled in the Museum’s Emerging Teens Program and is inspired by the exhibition Out of Joint: Joan Tanner.

Smart realized that our current approach to literacy offers too little\, too late.  \nREADING FOR OUR LIVES is a timely\, necessary tool as U.S. literacy hits critical levels. Currently\, there are 43 million Americans between ages 16 to 65 who can’t read well enough to complete a job application\, follow a bus schedule\, understand a rental agreement or parse choices at the ballot box. DESCRIPTION:Art Matters Lecture with Jan-Lodewijk Grootaers\, Ph.D.\, Independent Curator \nMuseums have undergone serious scrutiny in recent decades\, opening the door to a re-evaluation of their priorities\, practices\, and roles. Concerns from both within the field and broad sectors of the public pertain to accessibility and inclusivity\, to representation and repatriation\, to sustainability and social justice. Are museums about art/artifacts or about people? Should the focus be on objects or on stories? How can museums chronicle the past\, depict the present\, and become touchstones for the future of their diverse communities? This lecture explores the potential for museums to emerge as agents of social\, intellectual\, and ethical transformation. As stewards of global memory\, museums have traditionally been tasked with collecting\, classifying\, conserving\, and exhibiting. Increasingly\, museums are counting on community members to enliven spaces\, activate objects\, and write labels. On the first Thursday of each month\, participating galleries and venues offer free access to visual and performing arts in a fun and social environment. Venues feature attractions such as art openings\, live music\, artists’ receptions\, lectures\, wine tastings\, and hands-on activities. We hope you will join us to enjoy our beautiful downtown and all that it has to offer! \n1st Thursday is for locals and visitors alike. It provides an opportunity for residents to indulge in local culture\, mingle with neighbors and participate in the arts community. The program also offers visitors the chance to experience\, in one evening\, the diversity of Downtown’s visual and performing arts scene\, is aimed at developing a lively atmosphere downtown as well as showcasing the cultural variety that Santa Barbara has to offer.
