DESCRIPTION:Make it a Memorial Day Weekend to remember with a stop at the Carpinteria Valley Historical Society and History Museum’s Marketplace scheduled for Saturday\, May 25\, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the museum grounds\, 956 Maple Ave in downtown Carpinteria. \nCome for the rummaging and shopping\, stick around for the live music and snack bar. Vendors offer an eclectic array of merchandise — jewelry\, vintage clothing\, toys\, plants\, musical instruments\, old school film cameras\, handicrafts\, collectibles\, furniture\, are food items are the tip of the iceberg of this treasure trove. \nThe booth Sewing by Sandra features custom made goods by Sandra Santos\, a native of India who has lived in Carpinteria with her husband for the last 10 years. Santos offers dressmaking and alteration services. “I’ve been sewing for many years taught by my mother which is my passion. I’ve met so many wonderful people in Carpinteria who I now call friends\,” reported the seamstress. For more information\, email sewingbysandraoo@gmail.com. \nThe booth operated by the museum\, Granny’s Attic\, offers plenty of treasures to sift through along with a jumble of toys\, cameras\, linens\, kitchenware\, dishware\, dolls\, figurines\, record albums\, cameras\, arts & crafts\, and other assorted offerings. Prices start at 25 cents. \nThe free\, family friendly Marketplace is made possible by community volunteers\, who sell hotdogs\, drinks\, and snacks in addition to setting up\, tearing down\, and cashiering among other necessary tasks. DESCRIPTION:Every promotional poster heralding Santa Barbara’s unique Summer Solstice Celebration for the past 50 years and hundreds of photographs documenting its early years are among the many items in a new exhibit “Here Comes the Sun: Celebrating 50 Years of Santa Barbara Summer Solstice” on view at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum through June 27. \nIn just 50 years\, a small caravan of artists and mimes organized by Michael Gonzales has grown to a three-day extravaganza of street performance\, dance\, “people-powered” floats\, and live music. The Summer Solstice Parade now features more than 1\,000 participants and is watched by thousands more. \nThe Museum holds a complete collection of official Solstice posters\, which are a mix of works by well-known professional and talented amateur artists\, and were chosen by competition each year. Arranged chronologically\, some are signed by the artists. An interactive digital portal allows visitors to read about each poster and artist. \nIn the museum’s large Sala\, the focus is on the celebration’s expansion from its inception in 1974 with hundreds of historic images of the artists working in preparation\, the parade itself\, and associated celebrations. A 2018 video about Solstice by Justin Gunn\, current president of the Summer Solstice Celebration\, is also running on a loop. \nThe largest collection of images was contributed by photographer Nell Campbell who began photographing Summer Solstice in 1977. Campbell came to Santa Barbara in 1969 to attend the Brooks Institute of Photography\, and became a visual documentarian\, especially known for her images of civic protests. \nIn addition to the poster and photo displays\, the exhibit features a 9-foot-tall wearable “walking puppet” and several puppet heads and masks on loan from the Summer Solstice Celebration\, along with items from the Museum’s collection of colorful handmade banners and masks. Two paintings by the event’s founder Michael Gonzales are on loan from the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts & Culture. Each was showcased in the annual posters\, one in 1981 (the last year he directed the parade) and another in 1982. \nSegments from oral histories recorded by early Summer Solstice organizers and artists can be accessed by guests via QR codes. The interviews were recorded in 2023 as part of Solstice’s Legacy Project as a way to preserve the voices of Summer Solstice participants throughout the celebration’s 50-year history. \nThis year’s parade is Saturday\, June 22\, and the associated festival in Alameda Park is Friday through Sunday\, June 21-23. Guests will have the opportunity to be seated right on stage and they’ll also find themselves dancing to the tune of their own beat. \nSince it first opened 100 years ago\, The Granada Theatre has worn many hats. It started out as a silent movie and live theater venue in 1924 before it became a movie palace under Warner Bros. in the 1930s. Today\, The Granada Theatre continues to celebrate and embrace the performing arts in Santa Barbara. The state-of-the-art theater also houses eight resident companies. The Granada will continue presenting additional centennial programming through the year\, with more to come.

DESCRIPTION:Every promotional poster heralding Santa Barbara’s unique Summer Solstice Celebration for the past 50 years and hundreds of photographs documenting its early years are among the many items in a new exhibit “Here Comes the Sun: Celebrating 50 Years of Santa Barbara Summer Solstice” on view at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum through June 27. \nIn just 50 years\, a small caravan of artists and mimes organized by Michael Gonzales has grown to a three-day extravaganza of street performance\, dance\, “people-powered” floats\, and live music. The Summer Solstice Parade now features more than 1\,000 participants and is watched by thousands more. \nThe Museum holds a complete collection of official Solstice posters\, which are a mix of works by well-known professional and talented amateur artists\, and were chosen by competition each year. Arranged chronologically\, some are signed by the artists. An interactive digital portal allows visitors to read about each poster and artist. \nIn the museum’s large Sala\, the focus is on the celebration’s expansion from its inception in 1974 with hundreds of historic images of the artists working in preparation\, the parade itself\, and associated celebrations. A 2018 video about Solstice by Justin Gunn\, current president of the Summer Solstice Celebration\, is also running on a loop. \nThe largest collection of images was contributed by photographer Nell Campbell who began photographing Summer Solstice in 1977. Campbell came to Santa Barbara in 1969 to attend the Brooks Institute of Photography\, and became a visual documentarian\, especially known for her images of civic protests. \nIn addition to the poster and photo displays\, the exhibit features a 9-foot-tall wearable “walking puppet” and several puppet heads and masks on loan from the Summer Solstice Celebration\, along with items from the Museum’s collection of colorful handmade banners and masks. Two paintings by the event’s founder Michael Gonzales are on loan from the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts & Culture. Each was showcased in the annual posters\, one in 1981 (the last year he directed the parade) and another in 1982. \nSegments from oral histories recorded by early Summer Solstice organizers and artists can be accessed by guests via QR codes. The interviews were recorded in 2023 as part of Solstice’s Legacy Project as a way to preserve the voices of Summer Solstice participants throughout the celebration’s 50-year history. \nThis year’s parade is Saturday\, June 22\, and the associated festival in Alameda Park is Friday through Sunday\, June 21-23. DESCRIPTION:Join us for this info session and learn about volunteering a the Nature Center! \nVolunteer 20hrs/week and live at Cachuma Lake in Santa Barbara \nThe Neal Taylor Nature Center located at Cachuma Lake in the hills above Santa Barbara\, CA is looking for a single volunteer or a volunteer couple. We need someone\, preferably starting in May 2024 and staying through November 2024. This is a lovely time of year to be in this area. The volunteer(s) will be working with a fun group of other volunteers in the Nature Center and duties will include assisting with greeting visitors and children’s groups to the Nature Center\, attending to a small gift shop\, light duty helping to keep the Nature Center dusted and vacuumed\, and computer work. Computer skills are a big plus. \nIn exchange for volunteering an average of 20 hours a week\, a full hookup RV site (electric\, water\, sewer) is provided in a nice RV park just steps away from the Nature Center. Hours are somewhat flexible but revolve around the Center’s 10AM-4PM Wednesday-Saturday\, 10 AM- 2PM Sunday schedule. \nThe Cachuma Lake Recreation Area is a short 20 minute drive to Santa Barbara\, 10 minutes to Santa Ynez and the start of the valley wine country. DESCRIPTION:Strawberry nachos\, chocolate dipped strawberries and strawberry kabobs are just some of the tasty treats offered at the 38th Annual California Strawberry Festival\, Saturday and Sunday\, May 18 and 19 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds (10 W. Harbor Blvd.\, Ventura\, CA 93001).  The festival also features over 150 artists and crafters\, a Ninja Nation obstacle course\, live entertainment on three stages\, carnival rides\, a “build-your-own” strawberry shortcake and more. \nTrays of freshly picked\, vine-ripened strawberries are available at the festival and used in many strawberry-themed foods. Since its inception\, the nonprofit festival has contributed over $5 million to Southern California nonprofit organizations. Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. SUMMARY:“Here Comes the Sun: Celebrating 50 Years of Santa Barbara Summer Solstice”
DESCRIPTION:Every promotional poster heralding Santa Barbara’s unique Summer Solstice Celebration for the past 50 years and hundreds of photographs documenting its early years are among the many items in a new exhibit “Here Comes the Sun: Celebrating 50 Years of Santa Barbara Summer Solstice” on view at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum through June 27. \nIn just 50 years\, a small caravan of artists and mimes organized by Michael Gonzales has grown to a three-day extravaganza of street performance\, dance\, “people-powered” floats\, and live music. The Summer Solstice Parade now features more than 1\,000 participants and is watched by thousands more. \nThe Museum holds a complete collection of official Solstice posters\, which are a mix of works by well-known professional and talented amateur artists\, and were chosen by competition each year. Arranged chronologically\, some are signed by the artists. An interactive digital portal allows visitors to read about each poster and artist. \nIn the museum’s large Sala\, the focus is on the celebration’s expansion from its inception in 1974 with hundreds of historic images of the artists working in preparation\, the parade itself\, and associated celebrations. A 2018 video about Solstice by Justin Gunn\, current president of the Summer Solstice Celebration\, is also running on a loop. \nThe largest collection of images was contributed by photographer Nell Campbell who began photographing Summer Solstice in 1977. Campbell came to Santa Barbara in 1969 to attend the Brooks Institute of Photography\, and became a visual documentarian\, especially known for her images of civic protests. \nIn addition to the poster and photo displays\, the exhibit features a 9-foot-tall wearable “walking puppet” and several puppet heads and masks on loan from the Summer Solstice Celebration\, along with items from the Museum’s collection of colorful handmade banners and masks. Two paintings by the event’s founder Michael Gonzales are on loan from the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts & Culture. Each was showcased in the annual posters\, one in 1981 (the last year he directed the parade) and another in 1982. \nSegments from oral histories recorded by early Summer Solstice organizers and artists can be accessed by guests via QR codes. The interviews were recorded in 2023 as part of Solstice’s Legacy Project as a way to preserve the voices of Summer Solstice participants throughout the celebration’s 50-year history. \nThis year’s parade is Saturday\, June 22\, and the associated festival in Alameda Park is Friday through Sunday\, June 21-23.
