SUMMARY:California\, Quilted: Wild in the Oaklands
DESCRIPTION:The California Nature Art Museum is pleased to announce its upcoming 2024 summer exhibition\, California\, Quilted: Wild in the Oak Woodland\, on view from July 14\, 2024 – January 13\, 2025\, featuring new and recent works by artist Julia Laraway. \nFrom butterflies to bullfrogs to bobcats\, Oak Woodland habitats support thousands of animal species all over California. Inhabitants might find shelter in the open grasslands between trees\, scattered shrubs\, fallen logs\, streams\, and tree canopies. The wonders of this important habitat – its creatures\, colors\, and lines of the land – all inspire Julia Laraway’s collection of fabric collages and quilts featuring flora and fauna of the coastal oak woodland. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaraway found her way into quilt-making many years ago by the side of her mother\, and has always loved the sound of the sewing machine\, the smell of a hot iron on fabric\, and the bright threads that give each piece its texture and form. Her hope and the hope of the Museum is that this celebration of local species will inspire interest and passion for a habitat that has already lost up to one-third of its space in California due to agriculture and urban development.

SUMMARY:All Inclusive Fun at Family Days with NatureTrack
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy what K-12 students have been enjoying since 2011 — discover the beaches and trails in Santa Barbara County led by knowledgeable and fun docents. They will give everyone opportunities to explore nature in the ‘outdoor classroom’ where learning comes alive along with fun.  Finding the balance in one’s life includes nature as a vital element.  \n  \nNatureTrack’s Family Days field trips are for parents\, grandparents and children to enjoy nature games and activities together.  Learn more about the North Campus Open Space (7/14) event and other Family Days events at https://naturetrack.org/news-events.  \n  \nThe benefits of nature are well-documented as being in nature really does make a difference. There’s even a name for not having nature in the mix of your life – “nature deficit disorder.” https://richardlouv.com/blog/what-is-nature-deficit-disorder.  Plan to get your dose of ‘Vitamin N’ with us on this field trip.  \n  \nFreedom Trax units will be provided to people who use wheelchairs or to those who might need extra assistance on the trails at no charge.  Please RSVP  to abby@naturetrack.org.  \n  \nAll this at no charge\, just like NatureTrack (NT) has been doing since its’ formation for schools!  Every Field Trip for students is free and 30\,000 students can’t be wrong – they’ve called the NT Field Trips the “best day ever.”  Just come ready to learn and have fun.   \n  \nNorth Campus Open Space \nAtlantic Ct\, Goleta\, CA 93117 \nJuly 14\, 2024 \n10am – 2pm \n  \nInfo: abby@naturetrack.org  \n805 886 2047  \n  \nwww.naturetrack.org  \n  \nFamily Days:  \nhttps://naturetrack.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Revised-App-12_22_23-for-2024.pdf

SUMMARY:The Plastic Crisis: Science and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Plastic is everywhere. As a result\, our bodies and natural systems contain multitudes of harmful microplastics. In addition\, fossil fuel-based plastic manufacturing disproportionately impacts communities of color while exacerbating the climate crisis.  \nFor the health of our planet and the people living on it\, we need to drastically reduce the amount of plastics entering the environment and our bodies. Current sustainable solutions are still a privilege. In order to shift away from our current model of excessive plastic consumption\, we need inclusive solutions that effectively reduce production and encourage reuse.  \nJoin CEC and Plastic Free Future founders Alejandra Warren (CEC’s 2024 Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival Environmental Hero) and Dr. Matt Warren for a webinar to learn about the science behind the plastic crisis and to discuss solutions that can lead us to a healthier\, cleaner\, and plastic-free future.

SUMMARY:Explore and Experience Freedom Trax at Pismo State Beach With NatureTrack
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, July 21 from 11am to 2pm\, NatureTrack will be at Pismo State Beach  to introduce those who use wheelchairs to the Freedom Trax devices at no cost to make a closer connection to nature.  These devices enable users to get up close to the waters’ edge and navigate the beach under your own control. Dry or wet sand – doesn’t matter. An off-road revelation for anyone who uses a wheelchair or may have an equilibrium issue. Anywhere there’s uneven ground this device lets you feel as if you are on a level playing field\, so to speak.  It’s a game changer!   \nNatureTrack will have several Freedom Trax devices available for wheelchair users to use on a first-come\, first-served basis. We do ask for RSVPs to be able to accommodate people in wheelchairs more efficiently. This apparatus can quickly and easily convert a manual wheelchair into a battery-powered\, all-terrain vehicle allowing those users to traverse beach sand and trails independently.  Make your holiday trip to Pismo truly memorable. Residents of the Pismo who use wheelchairs have an opportunity to try these out and get out on the beach again.  The RSVP form will give us the chance to have a Freedom Trax device ready for your chair. NatureTrack will also have two manual wheelchairs available for transfer should your wheelchair not fit on the device.  Look for us by the Pismo Beach sign on the boardwalk.  \nNatureTrack connecting people to nature\, every day\, every way. \n411: \n7.21.24 from 11am – 2pm at  Pismo State Beach\, 555 Pier Ave in Oceano\, CA 93445.  Accessible Features on Pismo Beach Link: http://access.parks.ca.gov/parkinfo.asp?park=180&type=0 \n  \nRSVP: (805)886-2047  abby@naturetrack.org  \nNatureTrack is a 501c3 nonprofit that provides outdoor docent-led field trips during the usual school day for Santa Barbara County children at no cost to the schools or students\, utilizing local trails and beaches throughout north and south county. NatureTrack’s mission is two-fold: to encourage students to embrace our natural world with respect and wonder\, inspiring them to be stewards of our natural resources\, and prepare school-aged students with the attitudes\, leadership skills\, and habits for lifelong learning.  \nNatureTrack expanded its mission of connecting kids to nature and is now connecting people who use wheelchairs of all ages to get out into nature using Freedom Trax. This device quickly changes a manual wheelchair into a battery powered\, all-terrain vehicle which can easily traverse sand and trails. Now NatureTrack wheelchair users of any age can enjoy natural areas previously inaccessible to them using Trax. https://naturetrack.org. NatureTrack is expanding its reach up to San Luis Obispo and down to Ventura County with the Trax program.
