SUMMARY:Botanic Garden Talk on Climate Change and Drought
DESCRIPTION:“Climate Change and Drought Extremes: A Critical Perspective from Ancient Trees in California” presented by Daniel Griffin\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Professor of Geography\, University of Minnesota \nHow is extreme drought in California connected to climate change and human activities? What can be learned about past and future climate using tree rings from old growth forests in California? Dr Griffin\, a dendrochronologist (scientist who studies tree rings) connects the dots between humans\, climate change\, extreme drought\, and native plants in the Golden State. \nAn online talk presented as part of Santa Barbara Botanic Garden’s 2022 Summer Virtual Lecture Series which addresses biodiversity\, climate change\, and California native plants and animals. Registration is $12 for the public and $10 for Garden members. Once registered\, participants receive an email with Zoom link. \nDaniel Griffin studies the variability of past climate\, contemporary climate change\, and the climate-modulated coupling of ecosystem processes\, often through the development and interpretation of high quality tree ring data. Work in his lab group at the University of Minnesota is field-based\, student centered\, and highly collaborative. Their efforts have been supported by research grants from the U.S. National Science Foundation and other funding sources. \nCurrent projects are focused on hydroclimate in California and the upper Midwest\, and on developing sustainable technologies to achieve open science standards in dendrochronology. He participates in climate services for improved adaptation capacity\, and have long been interested in catalyzing connections between field-based research and decision making in natural resources management.

SUMMARY:Activating the Spectator by Reshaping the Aesthetic Field
DESCRIPTION:Op\, Kinetic\, and Participatory Art at Mid-Century \nArt historian Alexander Alberro explores the development of a research-based artistic practice that fused abstract art with mathematics\, science\, and technology in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The stated goal of the artists involved was to demystify the creative process in favor of an objective investigation of visual phenomena. Alberro will address how and why these experiments evolved into a greater concern with the participation of art spectators. \nAlexander Alberro is a professor of art history at Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City. His writings have been published in a broad range of journals and exhibition catalogues\, and he is the author of Conceptual Art and the Politics of Publicity (MIT\, 2004) and Abstraction in Reverse: The Reconfigured Spectator in Mid-twentieth Century Latin American Art (Chicago\, 2017). He has been the recipient of numerous awards\, including fellowships from the Howard Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Currently\, Professor Alberro is completing a book-length study of the newly-formed transnational web of individuals and institutions that has in the past three decades fundamentally changed the nature of contemporary art\, exploring not only what has led to this complex transformation but also the impact it has had on the current conditions of artistic practice. \nFree Members and Students\n$5 Non-Members

SUMMARY:Julius Caesar as Second Founder of Rome & the Evolution of the First Imperial Forum
DESCRIPTION:Art Matters Lecture with Chris Hallett\, Ph.D.\nProfessor of Roman Art with the Department of History of Art\, University of California\, Berkeley \nJulius Caesar spent a vast amount of money on building projects in the late 50s and early 40s BC\, constructing an extension to the Roman Forum\, a great Basilica in the Forum itself\, and a temple to Venus. Because Caesar was assassinated with most of his building projects left unfinished—and with some of them not even started—his impact on the city of Rome\, and the nature of the interventions he made\, is today disputed. The new joint Danish-Italian excavations of Caesar’s Forum\, now already underway\, offers a quite exceptional opportunity for scholars to re-open this and other important questions about Caesar’s original intentions\, and to offer a comprehensive re-evaluation of his legacy as a builder.

SUMMARY:Dunes: Visions of Sand\, Light & Shadow
DESCRIPTION:Traverse the sand dunes with Central Coast photographer Bob Canepa in the Wildling Museum’s new Valley Oak Gallery exhibition\, Dunes: Visions of Light\, Sand & Shadow\, opening September 10\, 2022. The public is invited to attend a fall reception on Sunday\, October 9 from 3 – 5 p.m \nThe unique terrain of the Oceano Dunes has served as a wealth of inspiration for Canepa\, who has visited these dunes weekly for years. From sweeping vistas of light and shadow to grains of sand caught in dewy moisture\, Canepa has surveyed these weather-sculpted dunes from a range of perspectives\, always finding something new in the shifting landscape. \nCentral Coast sand dunes and wetlands also serve as valuable habitat for many different species of native plants and animals\, including the threatened western snowy plover. \nThrough his vision\, Canepa aims to inspire others to help preserve these majestic and environmentally significant sand dunes for future generations.
