DESCRIPTION:Stage Left Productions is making a big splash this summer with The Little Mermaid musical. \nMore than 60 local young performers\, ages 9 to 16\, will take you beneath the sea at Santa Barbara High School Theater\, 700 E. Anapamu St.\, Santa Barbara. \nPerformances are Saturday and Sunday July 23rd and July 24th. Show times are 2 pm and 7 pm each day. Tickets are $15.00 for General Admission and $25.00 for reserve seating\, and can be purchased at the door. \nThe Little Mermaid is the story about the beautiful young mermaid named Ariel who longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But first\, she’ll have to defy her father – the king of the sea\, escape the clutches of an evil sea witch and convince a prince that she’s the girl with the enchanting voice. Reeled in by a story in which love triumphs\, you too will be caught by this adventure\, hook\, line & sinker! \nStage Left Productions offers an intensive 4-week summer performing arts program for young performing artists of all experience levels. The training program includes dance and vocal instruction\, set and costume design and construction\, actor training\, improvisation and audition technique. \nNow in its 22nd year\, Stage Left Productions was created and developed by Shana Lynch Arthurs and Steven Lovelace. Shana Lynch Arthurs\, a California credentialed teacher who teaches performing arts at Crane Country Day School\, is also a trained and working professional in the performing arts. Steven Lovelace is choreographer and former director of the Santa Barbara Dance Arts. Sarah Eglin will provide musical direction and superb vocal training. Captivating sets\, lighting\, sound\, is Technical Director\, Jonathan Mitchell\, and spectacular costumes are being created under the direction of Q Le. \nThe Little Mermaid\, based on one of the most celebrated Disney animated films of all time and the classic Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale\, with music by 8-time Academy Award-winner Alan Menken\, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater\, and book by Doug Wright with licensing through Music Theater International. DESCRIPTION:An evening of “love songs both sad and ecstatic” is presented in partnership with the Channel Island Chamber Orchestra as the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden’s  final Summer Serenade Series concert of the 2022 season on Friday\, July 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. \nSeating is on the Island View lawn outside the Pritzlaff Conservation Center and guests are encouraged to bring blankets and picnics. Leashed dogs are also – and always – allowed at the Garden. The series began on July 15 and featured local poets (including a former Santa Barbara poet laurate) and local solo musicians\, and continued on July 22 with three local singer-songwriters. \nTickets are available online at $25 for adults\, and $10 for youth (3-12 years old). \nThis concert\, presented in partnership with the Channel Island Chamber Orchestra\, features the orchestra’s clarinetist David Singer\, pianist Miriam Arichea\, and soprano Patricia Lathrop-McPherson. The program is highlighted by Mozart’s “Parto\, Parto\, (“I am leaving”)” from La Clemenza di Tito\, K. 621\, and J.W. Kalliwoda’s “Heimatlied” (Homeland) op. 117\, among many others. \nChannel Islands Chamber Orchestra was founded in 2003 and celebrates its 20th anniversary next year. Currently\, under the baton of Dr. KuanFen Liu\, the ensemble of professional musicians perform five-concert seasons in various locations in Ventura County. Visit www.cichamberorchestra.org. \nPatricia Lathrop-McPherson\, soprano\, studied voice at Brigham Young University\, where she was a founding member of BYU Singers. In addition to her work with the Channel Island Chamber Orchestra\, she has appeared locally with Cabrillo Music Theater\, New West Symphony\, Ojai Music Festival\, Opera West\, San Luis Mozart Festival\, and others. \nDavid Singer\, clarinet\, is also Principal Clarinetist Emeritus of the Grammy Award-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra\, his performances include the White House for Presidents Carter and Clinton\, guest artist with the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society\, and chamber music concerts with Yehudi Menuhin\, Yo Yo Ma\, Rudolf Serkin\, and members of the Guarneri and Emerson String Quartets. \nMiriam Arichea\, piano\, has been a principal soloist with the Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra since its inception\, and has also performed with the Ventura College Symphony and San Luis Obispo Chamber Orchestra\, and at the Ojai Arts Center and Ventura Music Festival. SUMMARY:“Project Fiesta!” Now Open at Santa Barbara Historical Museum
DESCRIPTION:With the return of a full-blown Santa Barbara Old Spanish Days Fiesta in 2022 also comes a full-scale “Project Fiesta!”\, the annual Santa Barbara Historical Museum exhibition that celebrates the traditions of this beloved citywide celebration. Due to pandemic restrictions\, the Museum presented limited Fiesta exhibits during the past three years\, including one held entirely outdoors. This year’s “Project Fiesta!” is back inside the Museum and features displays of beautifully restored costumes\, shawls\, posters\, artwork\, artifacts\, historical photos\, and some surprises. \nFor more about the exhibit\, which is on view through September 11\, 2022\, visit www.sbhistorical.org. For information about Old Spanish Days Fiesta visit www.sbfiesta.org. \nNew this Year – Masks and Scrapbook Excerpts \nSeveral whimsical handmade cloth and papier-mâché masks used in Fiesta performances of the 1950s and 1960s are on view in this exhibit for the first time. They were created by Jerry Brosik for use in Folklorico dances performed on the Courthouse stage during Fiesta. The pig\, reptile\, two roosters\, and other masks are on loan from the John E. Profant Foundation for the Arts. These and more masks can be seen in exhibit photos from historic and modern Fiesta performances. \nA large scrapbook from the first year of Old Spanish Days is just one of the 47 scrapbooks spanning 80 years that were recently transferred by Old Spanish Days to the Museum’s Gledhill Research Library. The book on view has been fully digitized and can be explored by visitors to the exhibition. \nAsking for Artifacts  \n“We want to go all-out for a major Fiesta exhibition for its hundredth anniversary in two years\,” says Harwood. “Our collection is vast\, but there are some gaps\, so we are asking the public for their help. For example\, we want to exhibit the colorful posters from every year that they were made\, and more film and home movies from past Fiesta events would be terrific as well.” \nThe Museum’s collection of Fiesta posters includes those from 55 of Fiesta’s 93-year history\, including the very first poster from 1924. Thirty-eight posters are still to be acquired. \nThose interested in helping complete the collection should contact the Museum’s library at archivist@sbhistorical.org. \nFun Facts About the Museum’s Old Spanish Days Fiesta Collection  \nThe pieces on view in this exhibition are drawn from the Museum’s varied collection of items related to Fiesta. The entire collection includes 40 pieces of fine art\, thousands of photographs\, hundreds of oral histories\, official badges from every Fiesta\, hundreds of souvenir pins\, trophies\, plates\, and dolls – plus the head of a steer which drew a cart in the first parade\, stuffed and mounted by artist Ed Borein. \nMore than 200 items of clothing are in the collection\, including pieces worn at the first Fiesta in 1924\, suits worn by early El Presidentes\, the robe used by Saint Barbara from 1950 to 2012\, Spirit of Fiesta dresses (including from before they were required to be white)\, and clothing from historic families such as De la Guerra. \n  \nThe Santa Barbara Historical Museum is located in downtown Santa Barbara at 136 East De la Guerra Street.
