SUMMARY:Cacao Loving Kindness Meditation - With Your Friend Rama
DESCRIPTION:An exploration through the depths of our hearts\, a clearing of stagnancies\, an invitation to love.\n\n\nLoving Kindness spontaneously found me one morning as an answer to my prayers. The prayer was\, “Help me find my voice so that I may be a faithful translator of the language of Cacao & worthy steward of Cacao medicine.” \nI awoke with a heart that felt like it was about to burst & what I was guided to do would later become the heart of my offerings. That fateful morning spirit had told me to start visualizing faces & sending loving prayers out to all those who came up in my visualizations. \nAs I shuffled non-discriminately through all the names & faces of the people I knew I felt the pressure in my heart begin to alleviate which was replaced by a feeling of blissfulness & I knew that I had found the perfect offering to share with Cacao\, Loving Kindness Meditation. \nIn my eyes\, there is no greater combination than Cacao with Loving Kindness. All that Cacao wants to do is guide you to your heart so that you may heal & expand. Not only your capacity for love\, but also your imagination & understanding of what love is capable of\, & who deserves it. \nIt is Loving Kindness Meditation that helps guide us through this expansion.

SUMMARY:Someday we’ll find it… An evening with Keith Mayerson
DESCRIPTION:As part of\, Inside/Outside\, an exhibition of recent acquisitions\, SBMA is pleased to invite Keith Mayerson for a conversation with James Glisson\, Curator of Contemporary Art. \nKeith Mayerson has long swum in the sea of mass media that we exist in and reframing them by painting them\, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art recently acquired his painting\, Someday we’ll find it\, the Rainbow Connection\, the lovers\, the dreamers\, and me (2023)\, thanks to the generosity of Kandy Luria-Budgor\, the Luria/Budgor Family Foundation. Whether now-iconic photographs of the Stonewall Riots in the summer of 1969\, a view of the Grand Canyon\, the crenellated skyline of Manhattan\, or the Muppets\, Mayerson takes subjects we already know—or think we know—and then personalizes them\, filtering them through his choice of color and mark\, highlight and shadow. We see them through Keith’s eyes and in so doing see them anew. \nThis idea of rebirth or revisioning is central to his series “My American Dream\,” from which a dream of justice and equality\, of a pluralistic society\, of hope and promise. Mayerson’s paintings are about what American can be in its best moments Keith Mayerson’s paintings\, drawings\, and graphic novels have been shown in dozens of solo exhibitions at such locations as Karma Gallery\, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Cleveland; and Marlborough Contemporary\, New York. Mayerson’s work was included in the 2014 Whitney Biennial and the Whitney Museum’s inaugural downtown show\, America is Hard to See (2015). \nThe conversation will be followed by a private reception and opportunity to meet the artist.

SUMMARY:“Tiny Taxa Doing Big Things” -- “Itty-bitty” Organisms Focus of SB Botanic Garden Symposium
DESCRIPTION:A day-long exploration of “itty-bitty” organisms and their often overlooked yet critical ecological roles is presented by Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. At “Tiny Taxa Doing Big Things\,” their 11th annual symposium\, seven scientists who study tiny plants and creatures each present a talk focused on their area of interest\, including lichen\, moss\, biocrust\, flies\, ants\, and parasites\, among others. \nThe talks reveal how a “small yet mighty” taxon may have an outsized influence on larger organisms\, aid in conservation efforts\, and support biodiversity on the planet. Also examined are the relationships between these diverse organisms and how cutting-edge technology is used to study them. The session culminates in a panel discussion about how to help conserve both the “tiny taxa” and the natural world at large. \n“Tiny Taxa Doing Big Things” is held at the Santa Barbara County Education Office at 4400 Cathedral Oaks Road\, Santa Barbara\, and is also streamed online. Advance registration is required for both in person and online attendance. In person admission is $40 for the public\, and $15 for Garden Members and students. A catered lunch is included. Attendance for the virtual-only is free\, but registration is required. For a complete schedule of speakers and topics and registration information\, please visit https://sbbotanicgarden.org/classes-events/symposium-2024/. \n“Sometimes in life\, it’s the little things that make all the difference. That’s true in nature\, too\,” said the Garden’s Director of Conservation\, Denise Knapp\, Ph.D. “Some of the biggest jobs on the planet are done by the tiniest of organisms. For example\, lichens build soil\, while bacteria\, algae\, mosses and more hold it together\, then bugs and fungi fertilize and recycle. This tiny world is sometimes beautiful\, sometimes bizarre\, sometimes disgusting – but always fascinating.” \nThe winner of this year’s Pritzlaff Conservation Award is world-renowned botanist\, lichenologist\, and philanthropist Shirley C. Tucker\, Ph.D. Unable to attend the Symposium\, she is honored at this year’s at this event for her many conservation achievements in California and around the world.

SUMMARY:Capturing and Recapturing A Day in the Life of Martin Luther King\, Jr. Photographs by esteemed photojournalist Santi Visalli
DESCRIPTION:In honor of the MLK Federal Holiday and Black History Month photojournalist Santi Visalli has quite a story to tell that is sure to resonate with the public today.  He was the photographer hired to document an event with Dr. King back on April 15\, 1967. The assignment was from an Italian magazine\, based in Milan\, now long out of print\, which only used two photos out of ten rolls of film he shot. The negatives were considered lost…until three years ago. All shot in black & white\, the event was a 1967 Vietnam War Protest in New York City outside the U.N. and there are poignant images of the nearly 125\,000 people at the march\, along with Dr. King addressing the crowd. Visalli hopes the photos will inform current generations about MLK’s advocacy for peace in addition to his lifelong pursuit for Civil Rights.   \nSPECIAL NOTE:  The exhibit will be available to schools and community organizations that may wish to visit the exhibit as an educational opportunity about the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.  Contact Helene Schneider\, curator to make any arrangements for group visits. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these photos in such an intimate space.  To see more of Santi’s work\, his website is: https://www.thefinestphotos.com/ \n  \nDonate to keep MLK’s legacy alive and help underwrite the events and programs of the MLKSB Committee.  https://mlksb.org/donate/ \n  \nThe Community Arts Workshop is space for artistic endeavors and exploration—a “blank canvas” for artists\, thinkers\, innovators\, and creators to develop ideas\, make connections\, and build community. \nThe mission of the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Committee of Santa Barbara is to foster positive relationships between many diverse groups in the Santa Barbara community and the surrounding areas; to sponsor programs and events which exemplify the teachings of Dr. King; and to observe\, and celebrate the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Holiday.       \nwww.sbcaw.org \nwww.MLKSB.org

SUMMARY:NatureTrack’s Family Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:This is a new program from NatureTrack — Family Days are for parents\, grandparents and children to enjoy nature games and activities together.  NatureTrack has been leading K-12 students on the trails and beaches since 2011.  Now it’s giving families a chance to experience the ‘outdoor classroom.’  Freedom Trax will be provided to people who use wheelchairs or need extra assistance on the trail at no charge.   \n  \nNatureTrack is a 501c3 nonprofit that provides outdoor docent-led field trips during the usual school day for Santa Barbara County children at no cost to the schools or students\, utilizing local trails and beaches throughout north and south county. NatureTrack’s mission is two-fold: to encourage students to embrace our natural world with respect and wonder\, inspiring them to be stewards of our natural resources\, and prepare school-aged students with the attitudes\, leadership skills\, and habits for lifelong learning. Recently NatureTrack expanded its mission of connecting kids to nature and is now connecting people who use wheelchairs of all ages to get out into nature using Freedom Trax. This device quickly changes a manual wheelchair into a battery powered\, all-terrain vehicle which can easily traverse sand and trails. Now NatureTrack wheelchair users of any age can enjoy natural areas previously inaccessible to them using Trax. https://naturetrack.org. NatureTrack is expanding its reach up to San Luis Obispo and down to Ventura County with the Trax program. Thanks go to the grantors including: UCSB’s Coastal Fund\, California State Coastal Conservancy\, Parks California ‘Route to Parks’ grant and the Coastal Resource Enhancement Fund. And now\, the California Access for All grant to expand the Freedom Tracks program up to North SB County.  \nhttps://naturetrack.org \n  \nPlease contact Abby@naturetrack.org for more information. DESCRIPTION:Author Janet Dowling Sands returns to present new insights and little-known episodes of history from the just-published 2nd edition of her popular book On a Mission: The Real Story of the California Missions. \nThe California missions are beloved historical sites\, but they tell a far more interesting and important story than one might imagine—one that is linked to global history\, geopolitics\, and to the founding of the country. \nPart big-picture\, carefully researched historical narrative and part travel guide the book is a beautifully illustrated volume that begins with the prehistory of California’s native peoples and describes the global context of the Spanish missions while examining their impact and legacy for modern California. Ms. Sands raises important questions about how we should think about the mission era and the missions themselves\, and presents the missions as they appear today\, highlighting their architectural styles and rare works of art. \nWednesday\, January 31 · 5:30 – 7pm PST\nSanta Barbara Historical Museum\n136 East de la Guerra Santa Barbara\, CA 93101\nGet tickets here

SUMMARY:The Many Colors of Afro Asia
DESCRIPTION:Art Matters Lecture with Joan Kee\, Professor of Art History\, University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor \nHow might we think about art and its histories from the perspective of a “global majority”? Spanning North America\, Europe\, Asia\, and Africa\, Joan Kee looks at the relationships that formed between Black and Asian artists at critical historical junctures—including the formation of international communities in the 1940s civil rights struggles in the United States\, patterns of migration in and around the Pacific in the 1950s and 60s and intensified Chinese investment in Africa after 2000. Through geometry\, a language of magnitudes and alignments\, the idea of an “Afro Asia” opens up new ways of seeing how artworks shape our cultural\, social\, and political lives. \nMary Craig Auditorium\nFree Students | Museum Circle\n$10 SBMA Members\n$15 Non-Members
