SUMMARY:Whitney Bedford’s Landscapes - An Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:The Atkinson Gallery at Santa Barbara City College and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art have co-organized an artist’s talk with Whitney Bedford\, a California artist who looks to art history\, especially Impressionist painters\, to make startlingly colored and brilliantly graphic images. The talk will be held at the Atkinson Gallery at Santa Barbara City College. \nMore information available at gallery.sbcc.edu. \nAtkinson Gallery\nHumanities Building\, H-202\nSanta Barbara City College\n721 Cliff Drive\nSanta Barbara\, CA 93109

SUMMARY:Root Medicine - Tea\, Qi\, and Asian American Herbalism
DESCRIPTION:Root medicine is making medicine with roots and herbs to increase vitality and strengthen our Qi (chi) energy.\n\n\nRoot medicine is making medicine with roots and herbs to increase vitality and strengthen our Qi (chi) energy. \nQi energy does not just belong to us as individuals but is also passed down to us through our ancestors. When we work with root medicine\, we also work with the genealogical inheritance that affects our wellness on a daily basis – and we connect more deeply to our own ancestral roots and stories. \nWorking with roots and returning to the ancestral roots of herbal medicine gives us the unique tools to build resilience in the face of modern culture and all the ways it can deplete our vitality and identity: our very sense of rootedness. \nIn this class\, we will deepen our relationship with root medicine plants through community learning and storytelling. We will learn the basics of Asian American herbalism to consider what Qi energy looks like in your own body. We will personalize these teachings by helping you tailor a DIY herbal tea blend to improve the strength of your individual and ancestral Qi. \nIn this class\, you will learn and experience: \n· What is Asian American Herbalism and Qi? \n· A three-part tea-tasting experience to learn how to make the perfect cup\, including green tea\, broth herbs\, and an herbal tea. \n · How to add herbs to daily food and drinks to improve the strength of your Qi\, including astragalus\, chrysanthemum\, mint\, ginger\, jujube dates\, citrus\, and codonopsis. \n· A tea blending bar to create your custom blend using the herbs we learned about in class. \n· Each class participant will take home a PuraLuna Herbal Broth Kit. \nErin Masako Wilkins is an Asian American herbalist\, acupuncturist\, and author who has treated patients for years and taught workshops for those seeking more information about herbal healing. Her clinical work is rooted in Eastern energetic theory – tapping into her ancestral healing traditions to empower others to restore health and prevent illness. \nShe founded and ran Herb Folk\, an herb shop and community clinic in Petaluma\, CA\, until 2022. She now runs HerbFolkShop.com\, where people can purchase teas\, herbal remedies\, and wellness products. She teaches herbalism courses online and in the greater San Francisco Bay area. Her classes include Asian American herbalism and folk traditions\, TCM theory\, seasonal wellness\, and community care workshops. Wilkins received her master’s degree from and trained at the Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine College in Berkeley\, CA. \nHer new book\, “Asian American Herbalism: Traditional and Modern Healing Practices for Everyday Wellness\,” is available everywhere books are sold. \nMeet the author event & book signing – Saturday 11/11 : 1-4pm \n+ A pop-up event with Herb Folk favorites to taste

SUMMARY:El Fantasma
DESCRIPTION:*RESCHEDULED* from September 1st to November 12th. Tickets purchased for original date will transfer. \n  \nEl Fantasma (The Ghost) is the stage name for Mexican regional singer and songwriter Alexander Garcia\, also affectionately known in Mexican media circles as “The King of the Underground.” He takes the stage at the Arlington Theatre on Friday\, September 1st\, at 8:00pm. Tickets are available at https://www.axs.com/events/481153/el-fantasma-tickets. \nGarcia has been interested in music since he was a teen. He dropped his first single\, “Mi 45\,” in early 2016. The video has already garnered over 122 million views. His debut album\, Equipo Armado\, ran up the Mexican airplay charts. He wasted no time\, issuing three more albums during the calendar year: En Vivo Desde Badiraguato\, Pa’ los Recuerdos\, Vol. 1\, and Vengo a Aclarar. A live version of the latter\, Vengo a Aclarar (En Vivo)\, followed the next year. The live version rekindled interest in the studio album\, which landed at number ten on the Hot Latin Albums chart during August of 2017. By the end of 2017 El Fantasma released his latest album “En El Camino”. El Fantasma was #7 on the SoundExchange 2017 digital radio’s Top 20 breakout artists\, the list also include Harry Styles\, Khalid\, Bad Bunny\, among others.

SUMMARY:Chamber Music Concert: Valencia Baryton Project
DESCRIPTION:The Valencia Baryton Project was founded in Valencia\, Spain with the vision of performing the nearly 160 works written by Franz Joseph Haydn as well as compositions by other composers\, both modern and classical. At the heart of the ensemble is the traditional formation in trio – baryton\, viola\, and violoncello – for which Haydn wrote 123 works of outstanding beauty during his time as the court composer for the Prince Esterhazy of Austria. \nMatthew Baker is one of only a handful baryton performers in the world\, an instrument considered to have been the pinnacle of aristocratic instruments of the classical era. On cello is Alex Friedhoff\, a former Music Academy of the West student (2004 and 2005). For their first performance at the SBMA\, (after their last concert had to be cancelled) the group will play Haydn’s Baryton trios numbers 67 in G Major\, 113 in D Major\, 87 in A minor and 69 in D Major. They will also perform works written especially for the trio including Canadian composer Steve Zink’s The River\, British composer John Pickup’s Prelude 1 and a U.S. premiere of Pickup’s new composition Lament. \n\nMary Craig Auditorium\n\n\n\n$20 Members\n$25 Non-Members

SUMMARY:John Stearns and His Wharf: A Sesquicentennial Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 16 · 5:30 – 7pm \nJoin historian Neal Graffy to learn the full story behind John Peck Stearns and his deepwater wharf. \nIt was Monday\, September 16\, 1872\, was when the first ship tied up at John Peck Stearns’ new wharf at the foot of State Street. Prior to this date\, ships had to pause a mile or more off shore while cargo and passengers were transferred to small boats and rowed ashore and back. It was a time-consuming\, expensive and miserable experience. But no more! Stearns had built more than a wharf\, this was the door that would open Santa Barbara to the world. For 150 years Stearns Wharf has endured storms\, fires\, earthquakes\, changing times and the threat of bombing by the most dastardly of villains. A true survivor\, it has overcome all that nature and man has thrown at it. \nRESERVATION REQUIRED \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/john-stearns-and-his-wharf-a-sesquicentennial-celebration-thursday-tickets-752082949347?aff=oddtdtcreator \nTo be alerted about a future talk\, email membership@sbhistorical.org. \nSanta Barbara Historical Museum \n136 East de la Guerra Santa Barbara\, CA 93101 \n805-966-1601 \nreception@sbhistorical.org \nhttps://www.sbhistorical.org/

SUMMARY:Plant and Bug “Nature Walk” of Elings Park Led by SB Botanic Garden
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to take part in a series of free Nature Walks to explore the biodiversity of the 230-acre Elings Park as part of a new collaboration between the Park and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. Each hike has a different natural history focus\, such as plants\, pollinators\, or birds\, and are led by Garden experts. \nThe walks are the start of as part of a larger collaborative effort between the two partners and the public to transform a section of the Park from invasive to native plants and document the effects. Future walks are scheduled\, once a month\, through the end of 2023. For more information\, visit www.SBBotanicGarden.org/calendar. \nThe walk of Saturday\, November 18\, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. focuses on Plants and Bugs and is led by Zach Philips\, Ph.D.\, the Garden’s Terrestrial Invertebrate Conservation Ecologist\, and José Flores\, Conservation Technician. \n“We invite the public to join us in recovering this portion of Elings Park so they can see first-hand the power of California’s native plants\,” says Denise Knapp\, Ph.D.\, the Garden’s Director of Conservation and Research. “Ultimately\, through this experience\, we hope that our community will leave inspired and begin transformations in backyards and landscapes across SB County and beyond.” \nElings Park opened in 1985 as the result of a community campaign to turn the former landfill into a public park. First encompassing 90 acres\, the Park expanded to 230 acres in 1994 with the purchase of an adjacent property. \nApproximately 75% of Elings Park is undeveloped. Nine miles of trails traverse shady oak groves and sunny\, ocean-facing hillsides covered with chaparral. Nonnative plants\, which have encroached on the natural landscapes\, have been the target of the Park’s recent efforts at habitat restoration. Over the past two years\, more than 250 California native oaks have been planted\, plus hundreds of native grasses and shrubs. For the past three springs\, a flock of sheep have been brought in for eco-friendly weed removal and fire prevention. \n“While Elings Park is just steps away from thousands of residences\, portions of it are still surprisingly wild\,” says Dean Noble\, Elings Park executive director. “Many people who enjoy our athletic facilities and cultural events have never visited our scenic South Bluffs. With the expertise of Santa Barbara Botanic Garden\, we can transform that landscape and encourage the next generation of community scientists.” \n  \nFUTURE NATURE WALK \nSaturday\, December 16\, 9 to 10 a.m. – Birds\, led by Scot Pipkin\, the Garden’s Director of Education\, and Zach Philips\, Ph.D.\, Terrestrial Invertebrate Conservation Ecologist \n
