SUMMARY:Art Matters Lecture - Ingres’s Creoles (Secrets) with Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby
DESCRIPTION:In 1836 Ingres ordered an artistic encounter between two Creoles who had both been born in Saint-Domingue\, renamed Haiti. From Rome\, the fifty-six-year-old painter exerted his power over an “homme de couleur” and a black man by orchestrating a confrontation that left both men in ignorance of its ultimate purpose. Ingres’s sixteen-year-old student Théodore Chassériau\, was being told secretly to paint the celebrated black model Joseph\, famously placed at the apex of Géricault’s Raft of the Medusa: “See to it that [Chassériau] keeps this absolutely the greatest secret. He should bar the idle from his studio at this time.” While refusing to share his intentions with either man\, Ingres confided to a friend that the subject was “Christ Chasing the Devil from the Mountain. As for the pupil\, he does not need to know this.” Locked behind closed doors and left in the dark as to Ingres’s plans\, two Creoles – painter and model – confronted one another; this lecture considers their meeting in light of France’s history of slavery.

SUMMARY:Miró Quartet - Chamber Music Concert
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 1995\, the Austin\, Texas-based Miró Quartet\, is one of America’s most celebrated string quartets\, having performed throughout the world on the most prestigious concert stages. They won first prizes at the Banff International String Quartet Competition and Naumburg Chamber Music Competition\, and in 2005\, became the first ensemble ever to be awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant. The Miró is quartet-in-residence at Chamber Music Northwest in Portland\, OR and Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival in Washington State. \nThey will perform Haydn’s Quartet in B-flat major\, Op. 64\, No. 3\, Caroline Shaw’s Microfictions*\, and Antonin Dvořák’s Quartet in G major\, Op. 106. \n* Caroline Shaw’s work will be performed three times this season. This New York City-based contemporary musician and composer became the youngest composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for music in 2013. DESCRIPTION:As the end of California’s rainy season nears\, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden Nursery offers a weekend “Plant It Forward this Spring” event featuring a larger-than-usual number and variety of native plants for sale. A preview for Garden members only is held Friday\, March 3\, and public shopping is Saturday and Sunday\, March 4 and 5\, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. \n“Native plants do best if they get in the ground before the end of the rainy season\,” says Matt Straka\, the Garden’s retail manager. “The Nursery is open year-found\, but were ready to ‘spring forward’ with an even larger assortment of species that are ready to be planted right now including unique items not always available. During this special weekend\, we’ll restock almost constantly to ensure a wide variety is available no matter what time you visit.” \nLocated just inside the Garden’s gate\, the Nursery offers a wide selection of easy-to-grow native plants year-round. Garden members receive a 10% discount on every purchase. \nFor this event\, in addition to the expert Nursery sales staff who answer questions and make recommendations\, volunteer helpers are available to assist shoppers with transporting purchases to the parking lot. \nVisitors wanting to visit the Garden in addition to shopping must make an advance reservation at www.sbbotanicgarden.org/visit/hours-reservations. Azar’s new record “New Sky” got fabulous reviews and is being played worldwide. DESCRIPTION:The exhibition shares the compelling story of activist Dolores Huerta and the farmworkers movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Featuring text in English and Spanish\, it explores Huerta’s public life as a co-founder of the United Farm Workers Union and what led her to become a Latina civil rights icon. She tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice along Cesar Chavez and continues to this day at 92 years of age. The exhibition is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington\, D.C. This exhibition received federal support from the Latino Initiatives Pool administered by the Smithsonian Latino Center.

Their happiness was short-lived as Stanley’s progressive mental illness took its toll. As we honor Women’s History Month\, this is the space to honor our own Herstory.  This is a space designed to allow everyone to be seen and heard without judgement or a need “fix”.  \nThis is open to any woman\, femme\, or any one who is identifies as a woman- who has a desire to connect with community\, be engaged with an open heart\, and participate in truly being present with each story told. We will start in Joy and end in Joy. \nWe all have a story and from our stories healing can ensue.  Through spontaneity\, lean detailed stories\, heart-centered sharing\, and deep present listening- we can all receive the medicine of council.  \nThis is a donation based event at Pura Luna Apothecary in Santa Barbara. Recommended donation is $10-15 for our instructor and staff’s energy exchange.
