SUMMARY:In Performance: Bach and Bachianas
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Museum’s continuing series of performance and dance\, Vanessa Agle Isaac\, dancer\, choreographer\, and Director of the Vanessa Isaac Dance Company\, will perform in the Museum galleries with members of her company and musicians from the Santa Barbara Symphony. Symphony musicians include pianist\, Natasha Kislenko and associate principal cellist\, Jonathan Flaksman. \nEmbodying the fluidity of movement and music across cultures and time\, this performance explores the links between the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and the later response by Heitor Villa-Lobos\, incorporating the rhythms of his native Brazil. These connections and contrasts are further embodied in the combining of contemporary choreography with classical composition. \nPerformances:\n5:30 – 6:15 pm\n7 – 7:45 pm \nLoeb Gallery \n$10 SBMA Members\n$15 Non-Members

SUMMARY:Robert Fripp & David Singleton:: Kuumbwa Jazz Center Santa Cruz :: 2/23
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Robert Fripp & David Singleton at Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz.\n\n\n(((folkYEAH!))) presents \nAn Evening With… \nROBERT FRIPP & DAVID SINGLETON – Englishman Abroad\nKuumbwa Jazz Center \nSanta Cruz \nFriday\, February 23\, 2024 \nDoors 6:45pm / Show 7:30pm \n$65 adv / $75 dos + Santa Cruz City Admission Tax \nSeated Show. \nAll Ages \nAll ticket sales final. No third party tickets accepted. \n \nAn Evening Of Talking with Robert Fripp and David Singleton.\nRobert Fripp is a founding member of King Crimson\, contributor and collaborator with Brian Eno\, David Bowie\, Daryl Hall\, David Sylvian\, Peter Gabriel\, Posh Poppers Toyah Willcox and Simon Darlow\, and a lot of other totally excellent people. Originating director of the Guitar Craft and Guitar Circle program. Since Covid and lockdown he has been kicking received opinion via social media with Toyah & Robert’s Sunday Lunch. \nDavid Singleton established DGM with Robert Fripp in 1993 and has reluctantly managed King Crimson since 2018. David is King Crimson’s producer and author of The Vicar Chronicles. \nAn endless stream of people ask Fripp burning questions\, many of which are actually not even quite smoldering. In most cases they would be better answered by David Singleton. This is an opportunity to ask both Fripp and Singleton the questions that get them out of bed in the morning. \nWhere does Music come from? What does it take to survive the music business? When does the impossible become possible? Can Music change the world? Why did Fripp put on a tutu and dance to Swan Lake at the end of his garden?

SUMMARY:Calling All Nature-Loving Wheelchair Users! Explore and Experience Freedom Trax at Pismo State Beach
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, February 25 from 11am to 2pm\, NatureTrack will be at Pismo State Beach to introduce those who use wheelchairs to the Freedom Trax devices at no cost. These devices enable users to get up close to the waters’ edge and navigate the beach under their own control.  Being in nature is part of a balanced life.  The most often heard response from wheelchair users\, family and friends after experiencing these units … This is a game changer!  \nNatureTrack will have several Freedom Trax devices available for wheelchair users to use on a first-come\, first-served basis. This device quickly changes a manual wheelchair into a battery powered\, all-terrain vehicle which can easily traverse sand and trails. People with equilibrium issues are also welcome to come try out the Freedom Trax – all courtesy of NatureTrack.   \nWe do ask for RSVPs to be able to accommodate people in wheelchairs more efficiently.  What a great opportunity to try these devices and get onto the beach again.  \nThe RSVP form will give us the chance to have a device ready for your chair. NatureTrack will also have two manual wheelchairs available for transfer in case your wheelchair does not fit on the device. Look for us by the Pismo Beach sign on the boardwalk. \nSign up here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdZ0Lu5faVcM1Ks9Do-GUlk-ck5N_QMnVNippO8If5dv10mKg/viewform \nPictured here: KCSB-FM freelance reporter Beth Thornton interviewed Donald Chan in 2022 when NatureTrack first brought the Freedom Trax up to the Pismo Pier for people to use. Take a listen here: https://www.kcbx.org/health-science-and-technology/2022-04-12/local-non-profit-makes-it-easier-for-wheelchair-users-to-experience-nature  \nABOUT :: NatureTrack is a 501c3 nonprofit that provides outdoor docent-led field trips during the usual school day for Santa Barbara County children at no cost to the schools or students\, utilizing local trails and beaches throughout north and south county. NatureTrack’s mission is two-fold: to encourage students to embrace our natural world with respect and wonder\, inspiring them to be stewards of our natural resources\, and prepare school-aged students with the attitudes\, leadership skills\, and habits for lifelong learning.  \nNatureTrack has expanded its mission of connecting kids to nature and is now connecting people who use wheelchairs of all ages to get out into nature using Freedom Trax. NatureTrack is also expanding its reach up to San Luis Obispo and down to Ventura County with the Trax program. Thanks go to the grantors including: UCSB’s Coastal Fund\, California State Coastal Conservancy\, Parks California ‘Route to Parks’ grant and the Coastal Resource Enhancement Fund. And now\, the California Access for All grant to expand the Freedom Trax program up to North SB County. \n Learn more at our website: https://naturetrack.org.

SUMMARY:Chamber Music Concert: Ying Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Ying Quartet occupies a position of unique prominence in the classical music world\, combining brilliantly communicative performances with a fearlessly imaginative view of chamber music in today’s world. Now in its third decade\, the Quartet has established itself as an ensemble of the highest musical qualifications. Their performances regularly take place in many of the world’s most important concert halls\, from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House. At the same time\, the Quartet’s belief that concert music can also be a meaningful part of everyday life has led them to perform in settings as diverse as the workplace\, schools\, juvenile prisons\, and the White House. \nThe Ying Quartet performed at SBMA in 2013 and 2017 and this performance will include Dvorak’s Cypresses (selections)\, Carter Pann’s Love Letters\, Paul Moravec’s Anniversary Dances\, and Dvorak’s Quartet in E-flat Major Op. 51. Dvorak’s Cypresses is a collection of love songs for string quartet and the full program expertly places it alongside similar inspired music of living composers—Carter Pann and Pulitzer Prize-winning Paul Moravec. \n\nMary Craig Auditorium\n\n\n\n$20 Members\n$25 Non-Members

SUMMARY:The Birds and the Bees and More: Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:The California Nature Art Museum is excited to bring the important topic of pollinators to its gallery featuring original art by Ava Roth\, Elizabeth Weber\, Susan McDonnell\, and Cynthia James. The exhibition will be available to the public from March 2\, 2024\, through September 2\, 2024. \nEach artist brings a unique perspective to their pollinating subjects. For instance\, artist Ava Roth works with honeybees to produce artworks using bee-created honeycombs. Susan Mcdonnell is producing new paintings showcasing lesser-known pollinators such as bats and butterflies. Elizabeth Weber’s photos spotlight dwindling monarch butterfly populations\, aiming to encourage the planting of native species. And finally\, Cynthia James is creating art that reflects the risks faced by pollinators like bees due to pesticides.  \nWe are delighted to also be collaborating with the Cheadle Center For Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration at UC Santa Barbara. The Cheadle Center’s contribution is focused on native bees\, including high-resolution images of rare\, local bees from the UCSB Natural History Collection and images of bees visiting flowers of native plants for an up-close look at their beauty and biodiversity. Cheadle Center Director\, Katja Seltmann\, a bee biologist\, will present a performative discussion and Q&A about bee natural history that includes bees for viewing under the microscope and music. Additional programming will be announced soon.

SUMMARY:Artemisia Gentileschi: New Understandings
DESCRIPTION:Art Matters Lecture with Judith Mann \nOver the last 75 years\, Artemisia Gentileschi has developed into an icon of female empowerment and the emotive drama of baroque painting. Identified with images of Judith decapitating the general Holofernes\, she has come to be understood as a woman who succeeded in a man’s world\, overcoming considerable obstacles to do so. While not entirely inaccurate\, such an understanding fails to address the reality of the artist’s life in 17th-century Italian society\, and has caused her less dramatic paintings to remain misunderstood or overlooked. Dr. Mann will discuss seven of the artists’ paintings\, including well-known titles such as Susanna and the Elders along with a series of works that have come to light within the last 20 years. Her talk will provide a richer and more nuanced version of the painter than has generally been offered in exhibitions and recent publications.
