SUMMARY:Chamber Music Concert: Ying Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Ying Quartet occupies a position of unique prominence in the classical music world\, combining brilliantly communicative performances with a fearlessly imaginative view of chamber music in today’s world. Now in its third decade\, the Quartet has established itself as an ensemble of the highest musical qualifications. Their performances regularly take place in many of the world’s most important concert halls\, from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House. At the same time\, the Quartet’s belief that concert music can also be a meaningful part of everyday life has led them to perform in settings as diverse as the workplace\, schools\, juvenile prisons\, and the White House. \nThe Ying Quartet performed at SBMA in 2013 and 2017 and this performance will include Dvorak’s Cypresses (selections)\, Carter Pann’s Love Letters\, Paul Moravec’s Anniversary Dances\, and Dvorak’s Quartet in E-flat Major Op. 51. Dvorak’s Cypresses is a collection of love songs for string quartet and the full program expertly places it alongside similar inspired music of living composers—Carter Pann and Pulitzer Prize-winning Paul Moravec. \n\nMary Craig Auditorium\n\n\n\n$20 Members\n$25 Non-Members

SUMMARY:The Birds and the Bees and More: Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:The California Nature Art Museum is excited to bring the important topic of pollinators to its gallery featuring original art by Ava Roth\, Elizabeth Weber\, Susan McDonnell\, and Cynthia James. The exhibition will be available to the public from March 2\, 2024\, through September 2\, 2024. \nEach artist brings a unique perspective to their pollinating subjects. For instance\, artist Ava Roth works with honeybees to produce artworks using bee-created honeycombs. Susan Mcdonnell is producing new paintings showcasing lesser-known pollinators such as bats and butterflies. Elizabeth Weber’s photos spotlight dwindling monarch butterfly populations\, aiming to encourage the planting of native species. And finally\, Cynthia James is creating art that reflects the risks faced by pollinators like bees due to pesticides.  \nWe are delighted to also be collaborating with the Cheadle Center For Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration at UC Santa Barbara. The Cheadle Center’s contribution is focused on native bees\, including high-resolution images of rare\, local bees from the UCSB Natural History Collection and images of bees visiting flowers of native plants for an up-close look at their beauty and biodiversity. Cheadle Center Director\, Katja Seltmann\, a bee biologist\, will present a performative discussion and Q&A about bee natural history that includes bees for viewing under the microscope and music. Additional programming will be announced soon.

SUMMARY:Artemisia Gentileschi: New Understandings
DESCRIPTION:Art Matters Lecture with Judith Mann \nOver the last 75 years\, Artemisia Gentileschi has developed into an icon of female empowerment and the emotive drama of baroque painting. Identified with images of Judith decapitating the general Holofernes\, she has come to be understood as a woman who succeeded in a man’s world\, overcoming considerable obstacles to do so. While not entirely inaccurate\, such an understanding fails to address the reality of the artist’s life in 17th-century Italian society\, and has caused her less dramatic paintings to remain misunderstood or overlooked. Dr. Mann will discuss seven of the artists’ paintings\, including well-known titles such as Susanna and the Elders along with a series of works that have come to light within the last 20 years. Her talk will provide a richer and more nuanced version of the painter than has generally been offered in exhibitions and recent publications.

SUMMARY:All Inclusive Fun at Family Days with NatureTrack
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy what K-12 students have been enjoying since 2011 — discover the beaches and trails in Santa Barbara County led by knowledgeable and fun docents.  They will give everyone opportunities to explore nature in the ‘outdoor classroom’ where learning comes alive along with fun.  Finding the balance in one’s life includes nature as a vital element.  \n  \nNatureTrack’s Family Days field trips (https://naturetrack.org/news-events/)  are for parents\, grandparents and children to enjoy nature games and activities together.  Learn more about the Douglas Family Preserve (1/28)\, The Santa Ynez Botanic Garden (3/10) and El Capitan State Beach (5/8) on the three inaugural outings scheduled.  \n  \nThe benefits of nature are well-documented as being in nature really does make a difference. There’s even a name for not having nature in the mix of your life – “nature deficit disorder.” https://richardlouv.com/blog/what-is-nature-deficit-disorder.  Plan to get your dose of ‘Vitamin N’ with us on this field trip.  \n  \nFreedom Trax units will be provided to people who use wheelchairs or to those who might need extra assistance on the trails at no charge.  Please RSVP  to abby@naturetrack.org.  \n  \nAll this at no charge\, just like NatureTrack (NT) has been doing since its’ formation for schools!  Every Field Trip for students is free and 30\,000 students can’t be wrong – they’ve called the NT Field Trips the “best day ever.”  Just come ready to learn and have fun.   \n  \nInfo: abby@naturetrack.org  \n805 886 2047  \n  \nwww.naturetrack.org  \n  \nFamily Days:  \nhttps://naturetrack.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Revised-App-12_22_23-for-2024.pdf

SUMMARY:Lecture: “Attracting Pollinators to the California Native Landscape; An Introduction to Pollination Ecology” with Richard Merrill
DESCRIPTION:While the topic of pollination in Santa Barbara County is both engrossing and essential\, few are familiar with the actual processes of the phenomenon and the major pollinators behind it: bees\, of course\, but also hummingbirds\, butterflies\, moths\, and beneficial insects. \nRichard Merrill received his Masters Degree in Population Biology from UCLA\, and investigated the biodynamics of ecosystems in a PhD program at UCSB. During his time at UCSB\, Merrill’s imagination was captured by the idea to design landscapes that would attract\, nurture\, and provide shelter for local wildlife – pollinators and beneficial insects\, in particular. He then founded and became Chairman of the Dept. of Environmental Horticulture at Cabrillo Community College\, and has worked on this project for over 40 years now. Currently\, Merrill serves as a volunteer consultant to the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and runs a small horticultural consulting business. \nJoin us for an inspirational and educational lecture with Richard Merrill at the California Nature Art Museum (formerly the Wildling Museum) in the First Floor Wildling Gallery. \nAttendees will learn how the different colors\, shapes\, and sizes of flowers attract their specific pollinators\, enjoy a presentation of garden-worthy California native plants that are especially effective at attracting pollinators\, and discover the importance of home gardens in establishing local “islands” of native biodiversity. Guests will leave with the tools necessary to create or enhance their own native pollination landscapes! \n\nTickets are $5 for members\, and $10 for non-members. \nTickets can be purchased here: \nhttps://crm.bloomerang.co/HostedDonation?ApiKey=pub_151c3146-9973-11e7-afbe-024e165d44b3&WidgetId=418713600 \nFor more information\, contact Rachel Metz at rachel@calnatureartmuseum.org

SUMMARY:Guiding Grace: Navigating End-of-Life Care with Doula Wisdom
DESCRIPTION:You have heard about midwives and associate them with birth. Another term you may have heard is a “birth doula”-someone who is present during pregnancy\, the birth\, and afterward to support the new mom and the family. \nEnd-of-life doulas are a new and emerging field and have a lot to offer in terms of understanding and preparing for death. In Santa Barbara\, we are lucky enough to have a team of trained and experienced doulas who provide their services for free. \nIn this lively and uplifting exchange\, learn what an end-of-life doula provides in preparing for death\, during the process\, and afterward.
