SUMMARY:Lecture and Book Signing: "California's Changing Landscape: The Way of Water" by George Rose
DESCRIPTION:Over 140 stunning photographs capture George Rose’s expansive documentation of California’s complicated and dramatic water story. George began this project during the Covid-19 pandemic\, just as the effects of drought were becoming increasingly visible. Then\, California was hit with record-setting rain and snowstorms in early 2023. This onslaught of water effectively filled reservoirs and – at least temporarily – ended the drought. \n  \n“I have always been curious about how we acquire our drinking water\,” says author and photographer George Rose. “I made the decision to educate myself about California’s convoluted water systems and set out to photograph as many of the important and not-so-important state water reservoirs as possible. As I looked back\, I realized I was witnessing a changing climate and landscape which was evolving before my eyes.” \nRose\, a contributing photographer with Getty Images\, lives in Santa Barbara County’s Santa Ynez Valley. Much of his time is devoted to documenting the natural environment as well as top vineyard estates up and down the coast of California. \nOver 50 years ago\, Rose began his long career as a photographer. He served six years as a staff photographer for the Los Angeles Times; prowled the sidelines of games as a photographer for the National Football League (NFL); co-owned and co-published the Mendocino Grapevine; won a World Press Photo Award for news\, and was named California “Newspaper Photographer of the Year” in 1976 by the University of Missouri; the Los Angeles Times has twice nominated him for a Pulitzer Prize; and in addition to California’s Changing Landscapes\, has released other coffee table style books such as VINEYARD Sonoma County (2017) and WINE COUNTRY Santa Barbara County (2019). \n  \nJoin us for an inspirational and educational lecture and book signing with George Rose at the California Nature Art Museum (formerly the Wildling Museum) in the Second Floor Valley Oak Gallery. His newest book\, California’s Changing Landscape\, will be sold onsite for $38.98. \nTickets are $5 for members\, and $10 for non-members. Tickets can be purchased through the Register button below. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Beth Gates Warren on Julien Levy: Maestro of the Art World
DESCRIPTION:Noted photography scholar Beth Gates Warren will present a fascinating lecture on Julien Levy (1906–81)\, who is best remembered today as the art dealer who brought Surrealism to the United States. His eponymous New York City Gallery (1931–49) was generally regarded as the best place to view cutting-edge work by such artists as Salvador Dalí\, Max Ernst\, Alberto Giacometti\, Arshile Gorky\, Frida Kahlo and Man Ray. A monumental just-published four-volume set of books presents an uncensored insider’s view of Levy\, the artists he exhibited\, and the influence he wielded during the 1930s and ’40s. Gates Warren’s talk will also include a discussion of Levy’s deep artistic and personal connections with Santa Barbara.

SUMMARY:St. Joseph High School Community Theatre presents Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella
DESCRIPTION:With its 10th production\, the St. Joesph High School Community Theatre presents Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. This production will take place at the Clark Center for the Performing Arts in Arroyo Grande\, CA with three performances on April 19 th and 20th 2024. \nThe school’s theater program began in 2019 under the directorship of Amy Curti and Erinn Dougherty. Beginning with Les Misérables\, the school has produced ten shows including Phantom of the Opera\, High School Musical\, The Little Mermaid\, Evita and The Music Man to name a few. The cast consists primarily of St. Joseph High School students\, but is open to community members from other schools\, grades 6-12. \nIn 2023\, Ms. Dani Payne stepped into the director’s chair with Shrek The Musical being her first show with the company. With a new director came a new venue\, traveling from the SJHS gym up to The Clark Center for the Performing Arts in Arroyo Grande. While this change has brought on some logistical challenges\, the opportunity to work in a larger\, professional venue far outweigh the “distance from home”. Performing at the Clark Center allows the students to experience the full aspects of a theatre\, complete with dressing rooms\, a green room\, hands-on opportunities for the tech team\, and more. Additionally\, it allows their audience a treat\, as the school-aged performers grew to fill a larger theater than they ever have before. \nAll ages are welcome to see SJHS Community Theatre presents Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella on April 19th and 20th\, 2024 at the Clark Center for the Performing Arts in Arroyo Grande. This year a Saturday matinee will be added to the schedule. Ticket sales will be through the Clark Center Box Office. \nSJHS Community Theatre is under the direction of Dani Payne\, teacher and Performing Arts Director at St. Joseph High School in Santa Maria\, CA. SJHS is a 9-12 Catholic learning community of students\, parents and educators that delivers the highest quality college preparatory programs and inspires a strong family spirit of shared Christian values in students who seek to develop their faith\, their intellect\, and their ability to make a positive mark on the world in which they live. \nFor more information\, please contact Dani Payne dpayne@sjhsknights.com. \nSt. Joseph High School Community Theatre presents Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella

SUMMARY:Native Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Native Plant Appreciation Month with native plants\, coffee\, and used books. Enjoy a large variety of native plants for sale from Yes Yes Nursery and Manzanita Nursery\, be inspired by educational materials from Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden\, cozy-up to a cup of coffee (and a bag of compost!) from Considered Coffee Co.\, peruse a selection of used books benefitting Museum education\, and get creative with a free planter-painting activity. \nNative plants are vitally important to the biodiversity\, beauty\, and stability that make Santa Barbara County the ecologically rich place that it is. Bring your own planter or recycled container (pickle\, peanut butter\, or mason jars work great for this!)\, or take one of ours (while supplies last)\, and decorate a home for native plant seeds or seedlings! \nYes Yes Nursery will also be offering a free sunflower seed packing activity for children at their booth in the back parking lot\, with sunflower seeds\, soil\, and container included. \nIn addition to their usual incredible coffee\, Considered Coffee Co. will be selling compost from their closed-loop system and partnership with Isla Vista Coffee Collective (IVCC). Considered Coffee Co. donates their coffee grounds to IVCC for composting\, and then later receives some back as composted soil to sell to the public. \nRegular admission prices will apply. Please see our admission prices below: \nMuseum Members: FREE\nGeneral (18 years +): $5.00\nChildren (17 & younger): FREE\nActive Military with ID: FREE                                                                                                                                                                            Museums for All with ID: FREE \nFor more information\, contact Rachel Metz at rachel@calnatureartmuseum.org. \nWhile at the Museum for the Native Plant Sale\, visit our current exhibition\, The Birds and the Bees and More: Pollinators . \nThe Birds and the Bees and More: Pollinators brings the important topic of pollinators to our California Nature Art Museum gallery featuring original art by Ava Roth\, Elizabeth Weber\, Susan McDonnell\, and Cynthia James. Each artist brings a unique perspective to their pollinating subjects. \nWe are delighted to also be collaborating with the Cheadle Center For Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration at UC Santa Barbara.
