It was a time-consuming\, expensive and miserable experience. But no more! Stearns had built more than a wharf\, this was the door that would open Santa Barbara to the world. For 150 years Stearns Wharf has endured storms\, fires\, earthquakes\, changing times and the threat of bombing by the most dastardly of villains. DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to take part in a series of free Nature Walks to explore the biodiversity of the 230-acre Elings Park as part of a new collaboration between the Park and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. Each hike has a different natural history focus\, such as plants\, pollinators\, or birds\, and are led by Garden experts. \nThe walks are the start of as part of a larger collaborative effort between the two partners and the public to transform a section of the Park from invasive to native plants and document the effects. Future walks are scheduled\, once a month\, through the end of 2023. For more information\, visit www.SBBotanicGarden.org/calendar. \nThe walk of Saturday\, November 18\, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. focuses on Plants and Bugs and is led by Zach Philips\, Ph.D.\, the Garden’s Terrestrial Invertebrate Conservation Ecologist\, and José Flores\, Conservation Technician. \n“We invite the public to join us in recovering this portion of Elings Park so they can see first-hand the power of California’s native plants\,” says Denise Knapp\, Ph.D.\, the Garden’s Director of Conservation and Research. “Ultimately\, through this experience\, we hope that our community will leave inspired and begin transformations in backyards and landscapes across SB County and beyond.” \nElings Park opened in 1985 as the result of a community campaign to turn the former landfill into a public park. First encompassing 90 acres\, the Park expanded to 230 acres in 1994 with the purchase of an adjacent property. \nApproximately 75% of Elings Park is undeveloped. Nine miles of trails traverse shady oak groves and sunny\, ocean-facing hillsides covered with chaparral. Nonnative plants\, which have encroached on the natural landscapes\, have been the target of the Park’s recent efforts at habitat restoration. Over the past two years\, more than 250 California native oaks have been planted\, plus hundreds of native grasses and shrubs. For the past three springs\, a flock of sheep have been brought in for eco-friendly weed removal and fire prevention. \n“While Elings Park is just steps away from thousands of residences\, portions of it are still surprisingly wild\,” says Dean Noble\, Elings Park executive director. “Many people who enjoy our athletic facilities and cultural events have never visited our scenic South Bluffs. Attendees can gather around the illuminated tree as a light snowfall dusts Paseo Nuevo\, as it will throughout the rest of the holiday season. Following the tree lighting\, attendees will have the special opportunity to share their holiday wishes with Santa Claus and capture the cherished moment with photos. Adding a touch of whimsy to the celebration\, the Grinch will also make an appearance. \nAs part of Paseo Nuevo’s commitment to inclusivity\, they will be hosting Special Santa Photos in the Peppermint Parlor from 4pm to 5pm. This designated space provides a quiet and secluded environment for children who may require additional support. \nThe celebration will continue in the Peppermint Parlor\, located across from Sephora\, as it transforms into a spectacular after-party venue from 6pm to 8pm. Direct from Andalusia\, Spain\, by way of a performance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic the night before\, “Sonidos Gitanos” (Gypsy Sounds) features true legends and several of the next generation of dancers\, singers\, and musicians. \nOrganized by Maria Bermudez\, one of the most revered artists in the world\, the showcase includes José Maya\, Diego Amador\, Diego Carrasco\, Pelé De los Reyes\, Carmen Grilo\, Curro Carasco\, Manuel Valencia\, Ané Carrasco\, Coral de los Reyes and Ana de los Reyes. Sonidos Gitanos has one performance only in Santa Barbara\, on Sunday\, November 26 at 7 p.m. at the Lobero Theatre. \n“These flamenco artists are highly accomplished performers recognized individually for their artistry and evolution\, but they never forget the essence of the deep-rooted culture of Spain\,” said Bermudez. “The audience experiences the gamut of flamenco shades\, colors\, and history through the generational range of the artists styles.
