SUMMARY:An Evening With The Kingston Trio
DESCRIPTION:Iconic group to appear at The Lobero Theatre \nONE NIGHT ONLY \nApril 9\, 7 P.M. \n \nNashville\, Tenn. (February 26\, 2024)–Nearly seven decades since they emerged from San Francisco’s North Beach club scene to introduce the sounds of folk music into the mainstream and take the world by storm\, The Kingston Trio return to their native California for their 2024 “Keep The Music Playing” national tour. \nCredited for sparking the “American Folk Revival” or folk movement of the late 50s and early 60s with their commercial success (which at one point accounted for approximately 15% of Capitol records sales)\, and known for hits such as “Tom Dooley\,” “M.T.A. (The Man Who Never Returned)\,” and “Where Have All The Flowers Gone\,” The Kingston Trio will appear for ONE NIGHT ONLY on Tuesday\, April 9 at The Lobero Theatre (33 E. Canon Perdido St.) in Santa Barbara. Tickets start at $26 for students and range from $51 – $76 for the general public (plus fees) and are available via loberotheatre.com\, by calling (805) 963-0761 or 1-888-4LOBERO (1-888-456-2376)\, or at the box office. Showtime is 7 P.M. \nFormed in 1956 by Bob Shane\, Nick Reynolds\, and Dave Guard (replaced by John Stewart at the height of the group’s popularity in 1961)\, The Kingston Trio is one of the longest-operating bands touring today. Though the group has undergone multiple personnel changes and its founding members have since passed away\, the music of The Kingston Trio lives on with the passing of the torch to three new members with intrinsic ties to the original: Mike Marvin (adopted son of founding member Reynolds)\, Tim Gorelangton (friend of Reynolds since boyhood and one of the few to record with him)\, and Buddy Woodward (who toured with the Trio). All three personally remember the iconic trio’s performances as folk music made its extraordinary ascent to the pinnacle of popular culture at the top of the music charts–perhaps part of the reason its newest members sound so much like the original Trio. \nCited as an influence by recording artists as musically and generationally diverse as Bob Dylan\, Crosby\, Stills & Nash\, and The Eagles\, to comedian and banjo player Steve Martin\, to contemporary artists such as the multi-Grammy® nominated Mumford & Sons and The Avett Brothers\, The Kingston Trio occupies a unique\, preeminent position in American musical history. \n“I am proud to continue The Kingston Trio tradition and to share the music Nick\, Dave\, Bob\, and John performed and getting audiences everywhere up and singing with us\,” noted Mike Marvin\, adding\, “It’s all the more gratifying to perform this music for all the fans and to ‘Keep the Music Playing.” \nFor more information on The Kingston Trio ‘Keep The Music Playing’ Tour and tickets\, please visit www.kingstontrio. \nABOUT THE KINGSTON TRIO: \nThe Kingston Trio was one of the most prominent groups of the era’s pop-folk boom that started in 1958 with the release of their first album and its hit recording of “Tom Dooley”\, which sold over three million copies as a single and was awarded the very first Grammy in the Country & Western Performance category in 1959. \nThe Trio released 19 albums that made Billboard’s Top 100\, 14 of which ranked in the top 10\, and five of which hit the number one spot. Four of the group’s LPs charted among the 10 top-selling albums for five weeks in November and December 1959\, a record unmatched for more than 50 years\, and the group still ranks in the all-time lists of many of Billboard’s cumulative charts\, including those for most weeks with a number one album\, most total weeks charting an album\, most number one albums\, most consecutive number one albums\, and most top-ten albums. For more information\, visit www.kingstontrio.com.

SUMMARY:Lecture and Book Signing: "California's Changing Landscape: The Way of Water" by George Rose
DESCRIPTION:Over 140 stunning photographs capture George Rose’s expansive documentation of California’s complicated and dramatic water story. George began this project during the Covid-19 pandemic\, just as the effects of drought were becoming increasingly visible. Then\, California was hit with record-setting rain and snowstorms in early 2023. This onslaught of water effectively filled reservoirs and – at least temporarily – ended the drought. \n  \n“I have always been curious about how we acquire our drinking water\,” says author and photographer George Rose. “I made the decision to educate myself about California’s convoluted water systems and set out to photograph as many of the important and not-so-important state water reservoirs as possible. As I looked back\, I realized I was witnessing a changing climate and landscape which was evolving before my eyes.” \nRose\, a contributing photographer with Getty Images\, lives in Santa Barbara County’s Santa Ynez Valley. Much of his time is devoted to documenting the natural environment as well as top vineyard estates up and down the coast of California. \nOver 50 years ago\, Rose began his long career as a photographer. He served six years as a staff photographer for the Los Angeles Times; prowled the sidelines of games as a photographer for the National Football League (NFL); co-owned and co-published the Mendocino Grapevine; won a World Press Photo Award for news\, and was named California “Newspaper Photographer of the Year” in 1976 by the University of Missouri; the Los Angeles Times has twice nominated him for a Pulitzer Prize; and in addition to California’s Changing Landscapes\, has released other coffee table style books such as VINEYARD Sonoma County (2017) and WINE COUNTRY Santa Barbara County (2019). \n  \nJoin us for an inspirational and educational lecture and book signing with George Rose at the California Nature Art Museum (formerly the Wildling Museum) in the Second Floor Valley Oak Gallery. His newest book\, California’s Changing Landscape\, will be sold onsite for $38.98. \nTickets are $5 for members\, and $10 for non-members. Tickets can be purchased through the Register button below. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Beth Gates Warren on Julien Levy: Maestro of the Art World
DESCRIPTION:Noted photography scholar Beth Gates Warren will present a fascinating lecture on Julien Levy (1906–81)\, who is best remembered today as the art dealer who brought Surrealism to the United States. His eponymous New York City Gallery (1931–49) was generally regarded as the best place to view cutting-edge work by such artists as Salvador Dalí\, Max Ernst\, Alberto Giacometti\, Arshile Gorky\, Frida Kahlo and Man Ray. A monumental just-published four-volume set of books presents an uncensored insider’s view of Levy\, the artists he exhibited\, and the influence he wielded during the 1930s and ’40s. Gates Warren’s talk will also include a discussion of Levy’s deep artistic and personal connections with Santa Barbara.

Beginning with Les Misérables\, the school has produced ten shows including Phantom of the Opera\, High School Musical\, The Little Mermaid\, Evita and The Music Man to name a few. The cast consists primarily of St. Joseph High School students\, but is open to community members from other schools\, grades 6-12. \nIn 2023\, Ms. Dani Payne stepped into the director’s chair with Shrek The Musical being her first show with the company. With a new director came a new venue\, traveling from the SJHS gym up to The Clark Center for the Performing Arts in Arroyo Grande. While this change has brought on some logistical challenges\, the opportunity to work in a larger\, professional venue far outweigh the “distance from home”. Performing at the Clark Center allows the students to experience the full aspects of a theatre\, complete with dressing rooms\, a green room\, hands-on opportunities for the tech team\, and more. Additionally\, it allows their audience a treat\, as the school-aged performers grew to fill a larger theater than they ever have before. \nAll ages are welcome to see SJHS Community Theatre presents Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella on April 19th and 20th\, 2024 at the Clark Center for the Performing Arts in Arroyo Grande. This year a Saturday matinee will be added to the schedule. Ticket sales will be through the Clark Center Box Office. \nSJHS Community Theatre is under the direction of Dani Payne\, teacher and Performing Arts Director at St. Joseph High School in Santa Maria\, CA. SJHS is a 9-12 Catholic learning community of students\, parents and educators that delivers the highest quality college preparatory programs and inspires a strong family spirit of shared Christian values in students who seek to develop their faith\, their intellect\, and their ability to make a positive mark on the world in which they live. \nFor more information\, please contact Dani Payne dpayne@sjhsknights.com. \nSt. Joseph High School Community Theatre presents Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella
