SUMMARY:Community Environmental Council Webinar: Get Charged: Everything You Need to Drive Electric
DESCRIPTION:As high gas prices make electric vehicles (EVs) more appealing\, California is accelerating the green energy transition. But a broad and equitable transition to zero emissions transportation is only possible if all drivers have access to EVs and support to make the switch from gas-powered cars. \nJoin the Community Environmental Council on Thursday\, October 6\, from 12:00-1:15 p.m. for a primer on making the switch to driving electric. Hear from current EV drivers and learn everything from the basics of charging to what’s available on the used and new markets. We’ll cover how to access and make the best use of local\, state\, and federal incentives on the horizon—and how to get support in your EV journey from CEC and others. \nRegister at cec.pub/NDEW2022.

SUMMARY:Wildlife on the Edge: Hilary Baker
DESCRIPTION:The Wildling Museum of Art and Nature is pleased to announce its upcoming 2022 fall exhibition\, Wildlife on the Edge: Hilary Baker\, on view from October 8\, 2022 – March 6\, 2023. The public is invited to attend an opening reception on Sunday\, October 9 from 3 – 5 p.m. at the Wildling Museum. \nWildlife on the Edge features new and recent acrylic paintings from Hilary Baker’s Predators series alongside a new series of animal portraits on birch wood. From a group of common pigeons to an elusive cougar\, Baker’s subjects make themselves at home in urban locales inspired by Los Angeles landmarks past and present. \nCoupled with Baker’s alternatingly bright and moody color palette\, viewers are provided a fanciful peek into the secret lives of their wild neighbors\, often hidden in plain view. \n“I consider my Predators portraits and present them straightforwardly\,” says Baker. “Their gaze is oblique\, their confrontation with the viewer unflinching and their presence – like the past – uncompromising. It might be argued that these mostly nocturnal creatures serve as stand-ins for any city resident attempting to co-exist with a disappearing homeland.” \nThe exhibition will also include video and photography highlighting native wildlife in the urban landscape\, providing local context for creatures who make the Central Coast home\, and exploring California wildlife crossings such as the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing currently underway at Liberty Canyon. A resource table will also offer visitors a chance for reflection with recent news on efforts to improve wildlife habitats and how the public can better coexist with animals in an increasingly modern landscape. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:First Annual “Ghosts Along the Coast” Brings Spine-Tingling Storytelling to Elings Park
DESCRIPTION:A female bootlegger from Prohibition\, a Depression-era hobo living near the railroad tracks\, a survivor of an 1853 shipwreck\, a Japanese “picture bride” from the 1920s\, a longtime lady lighthouse keeper\, and a newspaper editor murdered in 1880 – these restless spirits may (or may not) have been actual figures from Santa Barbara history. But they are all definitely dead. \nHear their spine-tingling stories from beyond the grave at the first-ever Ghosts Along the Coast\, held outdoors at Elings Park’s Godric Grove on October 13\, 14\, and 16\, with guided tours leaving every half-hour between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. (NOTE: no performances on Saturday\, October 15) \nEach tour makes six stops to visit the spirits\, who recount the stories of their lives and untimely demises on lit vignettes positioned under the oaks in Godric Grove. Tours are roughly 90 minutes long and led by Elings Park “Ghost Hunters” who share tidbits of local history\, including facts about the park itself. \nTickets are $15\, and must be purchased for a specific tour date and time. “Ghosts…” is recommended for ages 9 and older. Purchase tickets online at https://coastghosts.brownpapertickets.com. Space is limited\, and advance ticketing is recommended. Tickets are sold at the door if space allows and on a first-come\, first-served basis. For information\, visit www.elingspark.org  or call (805) 569-5611. All proceeds benefit Elings Park Foundation. \nThe walk is short\, but pathways are not well lit. Guests are strongly urged to bring flashlights or cell phones to help illuminate their way. Carpooling and ridesharing are highly recommended. Limited parking is available in Elings Park at the top of George Bliss Drive and Jerry Harwin Drive. No dogs are allowed in Godric Grove during this event. \nThe characters and actors include: \nYuko (Deborah Cristobal): this “picture bride” arrived in Santa Barbara from Japan in the 1920s to marry a man she’d never met. She searches for him in the afterlife after a horrible fishing accident. \nJulia Williams (Karen Dalton): her lazy husband couldn’t handle his job as keeper of the lighthouse on the Mesa\, so this mother of five took over – for forty years. Her ghost is ready for a deserved rest. \nSally Stanford (Nicole Iaquinto): the spirit of this female bootlegger is still distressed about a big delivery of Prohibition hootch that was interrupted by the opening of duck hunting season. \nThe Bookman (Kirk Martin): all this Depression-era hobo (and his pets) needed was a fine roof and their shack would have been the best in “Jungleland.” But living so near the train tracks proved fatal. \nTheodore M. Glancy (Alfred Smith): the Santa Barbara Morning Press editor was gunned down in 1880 by a District Attorney nominee who was livid over a negative editorial. Is there no justice? \nF.S. Crane (Patrick Turner): he made his fortune in the Gold Rush and survived the 1853 shipwreck of steamer Winfield Scott on Anacapa Island. His ghost just wants to find his lost gold.

SUMMARY:Reading and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:In a reading and discussion of his electric\, darkly humorous collection of 13 new short stories\, the inimitable T.C. Boyle\, Santa Barbara resident and bestselling writer of Talk to Me and Outside Looking In\, ”messes with us” as the book inscription from Willie Dixon’s I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man promises. \nIn the title story of I Walk Between the Raindrops\, a woman sits down next to a man at a bar and claims she has ESP. In “Thirteen Days\,” passengers on a cruise line are quarantined\, to horrifying and hilarious effect. And “Hyena” begins simply: “That was the day the hyena came for him\, and never mind that there were no hyenas in the South of France\, and especially not in Pont-Saint-Esprit—it was there\, and it came for him.” A virtuoso of the short form\, T.C. Boyle returns to share with us these inventive and masterfully told short stories characterized by his always biting satire\, resonant wit\, and a boundless\, irrepressible imagination. \nBook signing to follow.

SUMMARY:Writing in the Galleries
DESCRIPTION:Writers of all levels are invited to participate in this informal exploration of the Museum’s galleries as an impetus to writing. Monthly sessions are led by a visiting writer who begins with a conversation and prompt\, partially inspired by works on view. SUMMARY:"Memories of Mountain Drive" at SB Historical Museum
DESCRIPTION:Following World War II\, a bohemian community of free spirits began on the hillsides above Santa Barbara\, where they made wine\, music\, and art for nearly twenty years. Named “Mountain Drive” for the road that wound through the enclave’s heart\, this unique neighborhood is celebrated in a new exhibit now on view at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum. \nInspired by recently digitized oral histories from residents recorded in the 1980s\, “Memories of Mountain Drive” features photographs\, video\, crafts\, and more and is on view through February 28\, 2023. For more information\, visit sbhistorical.org. \n“Memories of Mountain Drive” was inspired by the Museum’s collection of oral histories from 26 individuals who lived on Mountain Drive from the 1940s to the 1960s. The oral histories\, recorded in the 1980s\, were recently digitized. Oral histories are accessible in the exhibit\, and the full interviews held by the Museum’s Gledhill Library\, can also be found at gledhilloralhistory.org. \n“Our goal is to create a feeling for what life was like during that time at that place\,” says Museum Executive Director Dacia Harwood. “This exhibit was inspired by the work of our library\, which is continuously collecting and preserving our unique local history.” \nChris Ervin\, the Library’s head archivist\, oversaw the digitization of the oral histories\, and put out a call to the community for Mountain Drive images. He also collaborated with Elias Chiacos\, author of the 1994 book “Mountain Drive: Santa Barbara’s Pioneer Bohemian Community\,” in obtaining donations of photographs and other items. \nThe images depict Mountain Drive residents involved in revelry\, winemaking\, pageantry\, creating art and pottery\, music-making\, and everyday life. \n“[A] family with open-hearted generosity and freedom from convention allowed the blossoming of a lifestyle that has become legend\,” writes Chiacos. “The beginnings of the hot-tubbing phenomenon\, the Renaissance Faire\, the revival of early music\, crafts and pageantry – all mounted with a rowdy humor and uninhibited sexuality – [are hallmarks] of Mountain Drive’s contribution to the California dream.” \nComprised of teachers\, builders\, artists\, writers\, musicians\, and dancers\, this community pioneered the California Bohemian lifestyle well before the counterculture hippie movement of the 1960s.
