DESCRIPTION:Combining punk abandon and tightly-coiled dance music has always been bonded into the band’s DNA. It’s this core plus their growth and mastery of songwriting that has seen them outlive the mid-2000s ‘indie/dance punk’ tag and has allowed them to consistently grow lyrically and sonically from album to album. As If is their most transcendent collection of songs yet. “Each album we’ve made has gotten closer and closer to our live set and this\, we’re proud to say\, is the closest we’ve come yet. We were heavily influenced by current dance music — Nina Kraviz\, Moodymann\, Paranoid London\, Rrose and Delroy Edwards were frequently referenced — and philosophically by the early ’90s house records we love on labels like Trax and Dancemania and by artists like Romanthony and Green Velvet. Those records sound great because they’re fairly raw attempts to use the technology of the time to ape the New York and Philly disco records that those producers loved. We figured\, if those old house records sound like they do because the artists manipulated disco samples with MPCs\, why couldn’t we just sample ourselves and manipulate the tracks with Ableton Live? The more raw it came out the better it felt\, not only because that’s what excited us about those old records\, but because it felt more punk\, which always feels good.”

DESCRIPTION:Grammy-winning pianist\, Jeff Lorber\, with Jimmy Haslip- bass\, Gary Novak- drums\, Lenny Castro- percussion\n\n\nSpace-Time is a supersonic odyssey with longtime Jeff Lorber Fusion trio-mates drummer Gary Novak (who has worked with everyone from George Benson to Chick Corea) and bassist/Yellowjackets founding member Jimmy Haslip. “I first met Jimmy and we worked together in the early 80s but we really started working closely in 2010 after a tour we did together in Russia\,” recalls Lorber. “He’s a good partner to have and he keeps the big picture in mind\, when I sometimes tend to be more detail oriented about things. Gary became part of the core rhythm section around 2010. He’s a good friend and good hang. We have a lot of fun together besides making music.” The album also enlists some help from flutist Hubert Laws\, guitarists Paul Jackson\, Jr.\, Michael Landau and Robben Ford\, saxophonists Bob Mintzer\, Dave Mann\, Gary Meek and Gerald Albright (who actually plays electric bass on a track). Space-Time showcases new and original material including a track that was penned for Jeff’s friend and towering piano giant Chick Corea\, shortly after his passing.\n \n \nJeff Lorber Fusion maps out all of the celestial coordinates on Space-Time\, offering a wondrous galaxy of sonic delight.   Lorber and company manage to create a sound and feel throughout the album that captures the essence and vibe of a live show. “All the musicians are experienced studio musicians and that’s something that studio players always aim for. The idea is to make it sound natural\, grooving and relaxed and to capture the sound of playing for a live audience even though the audience isn’t physically there.” While most of the band completed the album from their own remote studio locations\, Lorber and Gary Novak did have the opportunity to record together in the same studio.  “Over the last number of years most of us have gotten used to tracking at home\,” explains Jeff. “So from that standpoint it wasn’t that different from a normal record.  One thing that was different\, however was the absence of live touring\, I was able to really focus on the record and this album benefitted positively from that.”

DESCRIPTION:Channel Islands Restoration would like you to invite for a public meeting to discuss the benefits of sheep grazing at the San Marcos Foothills Preserve. This open discussion will outline how grazing helps reduce wildfire risk and supports environmentally sustainable habitats for native species. Sheep grazing was a primary factor in preventing devastation to communities surrounding the San Marcos Foothills Preserve during the Cave Fire that erupted in 2019. \nThis meeting is an opportunity to learn about how grazing impacts our community. Channel Islands Restoration and our partners at Cuyama Lamb will be present to answer any questions you have about our grazing program. To mark the occasion\, Cuyama Lamb will also bring several lambs. We will meet at the entrance of the San Marcos Foothills Preserve on Via Gaitero Road Wednesday\, December 21st at 2 pm to discuss this critical topic. We will not require reservations for our meeting. However\, please feel free to let us know if you’re able to join our event. Exemplifies the current state of West Coast jazz by retaining the rich small ensemble arranging style developed in California during the 1950s\, coupled with a contemporary approach to small group playing. L.A.6 carries on the relaxed tradition of West Coast jazz in a contemporary setting\, while bringing in some more intense elements of hard-bop such as played by Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers or Wayne Shorter. The tunes are an interesting mix of standards and original jazz compositions by members of the band. Join us from 1-3 pm as Siddhi and Simone apply breathwork\, focus\, connection\, and movement exercises to deepen each couple’s spiritual\, mental\, and emotional foundation. DESCRIPTION:Son of Mattei’s Tavern Founder Created Images of Luminaries\, Including a President\, Santa Barbara Residents\, and Visitors                           \nPortraitist Clarence Mattei (1883-1945) captured images of notable figures on the local\, national\, and international stages of his time. But his roots are deep in Santa Barbara County\, as the son of the founder of famed Mattei’s Tavern in Los Olivos. A new exhibit at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum “Clarence Mattei: Portrait of a Community\,” on view now through May 2023\, showcases the artist’s work in oil\, pen\, pencil\, and charcoal from 1898 to 1945. It includes drawings made in Los Olivos from the artist’s teenage years\, which are on view for the first time. \nAdmission to the Santa Barbara Historical Museum is free. Hours are currently Wednesdays\, Fridays\, Saturdays\, and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. and Thursdays from noon to 7 p.m. Visit www.sbhistorical.org. \n“This is an incredible look at one of our most well-known residents and a celebration of a career that spanned more than forty years\,” said Museum Director Dacia Harwood. “We’re especially gratified to present the early drawings\, which were recently gifted to us and have not been exhibited before.” \nAt the height of his career\, Clarence Mattei was among the most sought-after portraitists in the country\, and created images of influential people\, including a President\, as well as prominent local residents and tourists visiting his El Paseo studio. But his beginnings were in Los Olivos\, where his father\, Swiss-Italian immigrant Felix\, founded the stagecoach stop Mattei’s Tavern in 1886. It became a popular hotel and watering hole\, a reputation that continues to this day. \nEarly works in the exhibition include oil portraits of Mattei’s family and Tavern regulars\, along with early renderings of the locals who worked and hung around the Tavern\, from cowboys to cooks to quirky characters. These drawings are on view for the first time. \nNoted American portraitist John Singer Sargent met Mattei in London in 1905 and became a good friend\, teacher\, and mentor to the young artist. He encouraged Mattei to pursue his charcoal portraits\, which the artist did beginning in 1914. \nHe became a sought-after artist for portraits and the new exhibition showcases how he captured luminaries of the era\, such as U.S. President Herbert Hoover; artist John Singer Sargent; Henry S. Pritchett\, astronomer and President of MIT; many inscribed with dedications from the artist. \nLocal civic leaders also commissioned portraits from philanthropist Amy DuPont (industrial heiress)\, Peggy Stow (daughter of Sherman and Ida Hollister Stow\, who built Stow House)\, Thomas More Storke (publisher of the News-Press)\, and others. The exhibit also features several unnamed individuals\, whom the public is invited to help identify. \nWhat is believed to be among Mattei’s last works is also on view. The 1944 charcoal portrait inscribed “To Suzanne from Uncle Clarence” and is of his niece Suzanne Mattei. Clarence Mattei died in Santa Barbara on April 2\, 1945. \nMattei’s Tavern\, a Santa Barbara County historic landmark\, recently reopened as the restaurant and bar as part of development of a new 67-room luxury resort named “The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern\,” which is slated to open in February 2023. \n
