DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to take part in a series of free Nature Walks to explore the biodiversity of the 230-acre Elings Park as part of a new collaboration between the Park and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. Each hike has a different natural history focus\, such as plants\, pollinators\, or birds\, and are led by Garden experts. \nPlants are the focus on the walk on Saturday\, June 24\, from 9 to 10 a.m. and is led by Denise Knapp\, Ph.D.\, the Garden’s Director of Conservation and Research\, and Annie Ayers\, Herbarium Technician. \nThe walks are the start of as part of a larger collaborative effort between the two partners and the public to transform a section of the Park from invasive to native plants and document the effects. Future walks are scheduled\, once a month\, through the end of 2023. No reservations are required. Meet at the parking lot adjacent to the park administration building. For more information\, visit www.SBBotanicGarden.org/calendar. \n“We invite the public to join us in recovering this portion of Elings Park so they can see first-hand the power of California’s native plants\,” says Dr. Knapp. “Ultimately\, through this experience\, we hope that our community will leave inspired and begin transformations in backyards and landscapes across SB County and beyond.” \nElings Park opened in 1985 as the result of a community campaign to turn the former landfill into a public park. First encompassing 90 acres\, the Park expanded to 230 acres in 1994 with the purchase of an adjacent property. \nApproximately 75% of Elings Park is undeveloped. Nine miles of trails traverse shady oak groves and sunny\, ocean-facing hillsides covered with chaparral. Nonnative plants\, which have encroached on the natural landscapes\, have been the target of the Park’s recent efforts at habitat restoration. Over the past two years\, more than 250 California native oaks have been planted\, plus hundreds of native grasses and shrubs. For the past three springs\, a flock of sheep have been brought in for eco-friendly weed removal and fire prevention. \n“While Elings Park is just steps away from thousands of residences\, portions of it are still surprisingly wild\,” says Dean Noble\, Elings Park executive director. “Many people who enjoy our athletic facilities and cultural events have never visited our scenic South Bluffs. Both restaurants will be offering a special 20% off all pizzas during event nights! \n This week’s artist\, Katy Caballero is an 18 year old singer\, songwriter based in Santa Barbara. At 10 she started writing songs as an outlet and a way to express herself and since then has continued to grow. She released her first song (Not Not A Love Song) at age 13. With past experience of working with Joel Jacks for production\, she produced “Good Enough for Me” on her own at age 15. Katy writes in hopes to speak to the next generation. To give them a voice. As a member of Girls Rock Santa Barbara she believes in equality and that no voice is too small or too young.  She is currently attending BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC in Boston\, MA & is studying Professional Music with a concentration in songwriting.

DESCRIPTION:Avila Beach – The Avila Beach Civic Association is pleased to announce the 2023 Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast & Doggie Parade.  Breakfast will be held at the Avila Beach Community Center\, 191 San Miguel Street from 8:30-11:00 a.m.\, followed by the Doggie Parade on the Avila Promenade at 11 a.m. \nTickets for the breakfast are $10 for adults and $5 for children 6 and under.  Tickets can be purchased at the door\, at the Community Center office. There will be tables outside in the Healing Garden with puppy sitters so that everyone can bring their pets to the breakfast. \nThe Doggie Parade and Doggie Costume Contest are free\, but a $5 donation is appreciated. While the music is free and open to the public to enjoy\, patrons are also encouraged to grab a bite or a drink at OPPI’Z Bistro and Natural Pizza\, and L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele. Both restaurants will be offering a special 20% off all pizzas during event nights! \nThis week’s band\, The Natalie Espinoza Trio\, is a group of local musicians that have been playing around town at local venues and busking on State street. They play pop music with a flare of jazz undertones and some soul/r&b. Natalie was highly influenced by jazz music growing up and that shows in her style of singing and arrangements. She ended up studying music here at the Santa Barbara City College and then transferred to get her Bachelors Degree in music with an emphasis in voice. Her goal is to share music with everyone and to hopefully spread joy and love through her music.

SUMMARY:Zurbarán and Murillo: Observations on 17th-century Spanish Painting from the Conservation Studio
DESCRIPTION:Art Matters Lecture with Claire Barry\, Director of Conservation Emerita\, Kimbell Art Museum \nDuring the 1620s and 1630s\, Seville’s many religious foundations kept Francisco de Zurbarán and his large workshop busy with commissions. After about 1640\, however\, Zurbarán’s sober and restrained style lost favor to the softer look and more emotional appeal of younger artists\, and he began to actively produce paintings for export to the New World. \nBartolomé Murillo succeeded Zurbarán as Seville’s leading artist. He animated his engaging subjects with an uncanny narrative skill. Aspects of Murillo’s studio practice\, materials and artistic intentions\, revealed through close examination of the artist’s genre paintings in the conservation studio will be discussed. \nFree Students and Museum Circle Members\n$10 SBMA Members\n$15 Non-Members
