The public is invited to attend an opening reception on Sunday\, October 9 from 3 – 5 p.m. at the Wildling Museum. \nWildlife on the Edge features new and recent acrylic paintings from Hilary Baker’s Predators series alongside a new series of animal portraits on birch wood. From a group of common pigeons to an elusive cougar\, Baker’s subjects make themselves at home in urban locales inspired by Los Angeles landmarks past and present. \nCoupled with Baker’s alternatingly bright and moody color palette\, viewers are provided a fanciful peek into the secret lives of their wild neighbors\, often hidden in plain view. \n“I consider my Predators portraits and present them straightforwardly\,” says Baker. “Their gaze is oblique\, their confrontation with the viewer unflinching and their presence – like the past – uncompromising. It might be argued that these mostly nocturnal creatures serve as stand-ins for any city resident attempting to co-exist with a disappearing homeland.” \nThe exhibition will also include video and photography highlighting native wildlife in the urban landscape\, providing local context for creatures who make the Central Coast home\, and exploring California wildlife crossings such as the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing currently underway at Liberty Canyon. In the decades to come\, the group would go on to release ten critically acclaimed studio albums and cement themselves as architects of a new breed of California rock and soul\, one equally informed by the breezy harmonies of the Beach Boys\, the funky roots of The Band\, and the psychedelic Americana of Buffalo Springfield. Hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “one of the Bay Area’s most beloved live outfits\,” the group’s headline and festival performances became the stuff of legend and helped earn them dates with everyone from Johnny Cash and Wilco to Lucinda Williams and The Black Crowes. The harvesting of food from the garden supports programs at Grace Food Pantry. DESCRIPTION:The Carpinteria Valley Historical Society and History Museum will host its Marketplace on Saturday\, Dec. 3\, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the museum grounds at 956 Maple Ave. in Carpinteria. \n“In response to our vendors\, attendees\, and museum volunteers\, we’re starting a new tradition of having the holiday-themed Marketplace in December rather than Thanksgiving weekend\,” said Jayme Yahr\, executive director and curator of the nonprofit organization. \nAs always\, the Marketplace will be filled with a large variety of goods for sale including handcrafted gifts\, toys\, antiques\, furniture\, jewelry\, clothing\, plants\, musical instruments\, household items including quilts\, kitchenware\, and chinaware\, among other treasures. Of special note are the 25 cent and $1 tables at Granny’s Attic\, the booth operated by the museum. \nLocal baker and native Carpinterian Christina Welch\, founder of Dinkelbrot\, will be selling Einkorn\, an ancient grain bread. Hearty\, dense\, and made from spelt\, Einkorn is original wheat that has not been genetically modified unlike today’s wheat that causes stomach issues such as bloating\, gluten sensitivity\, and celiac disease.
