SUMMARY:Dunes: Visions of Sand\, Light & Shadow
DESCRIPTION:Traverse the sand dunes with Central Coast photographer Bob Canepa in the Wildling Museum’s new Valley Oak Gallery exhibition\, Dunes: Visions of Light\, Sand & Shadow\, opening September 10\, 2022. The public is invited to attend a fall reception on Sunday\, October 9 from 3 – 5 p.m \nThe unique terrain of the Oceano Dunes has served as a wealth of inspiration for Canepa\, who has visited these dunes weekly for years. From sweeping vistas of light and shadow to grains of sand caught in dewy moisture\, Canepa has surveyed these weather-sculpted dunes from a range of perspectives\, always finding something new in the shifting landscape. \nCentral Coast sand dunes and wetlands also serve as valuable habitat for many different species of native plants and animals\, including the threatened western snowy plover. \nThrough his vision\, Canepa aims to inspire others to help preserve these majestic and environmentally significant sand dunes for future generations.

SUMMARY:Wildlife on the Edge: Hilary Baker
DESCRIPTION:The Wildling Museum of Art and Nature is pleased to announce its upcoming 2022 fall exhibition\, Wildlife on the Edge: Hilary Baker\, on view from October 8\, 2022 – March 6\, 2023. The public is invited to attend an opening reception on Sunday\, October 9 from 3 – 5 p.m. at the Wildling Museum. \nWildlife on the Edge features new and recent acrylic paintings from Hilary Baker’s Predators series alongside a new series of animal portraits on birch wood. From a group of common pigeons to an elusive cougar\, Baker’s subjects make themselves at home in urban locales inspired by Los Angeles landmarks past and present. \nCoupled with Baker’s alternatingly bright and moody color palette\, viewers are provided a fanciful peek into the secret lives of their wild neighbors\, often hidden in plain view. \n“I consider my Predators portraits and present them straightforwardly\,” says Baker. “Their gaze is oblique\, their confrontation with the viewer unflinching and their presence – like the past – uncompromising. It might be argued that these mostly nocturnal creatures serve as stand-ins for any city resident attempting to co-exist with a disappearing homeland.” \nThe exhibition will also include video and photography highlighting native wildlife in the urban landscape\, providing local context for creatures who make the Central Coast home\, and exploring California wildlife crossings such as the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing currently underway at Liberty Canyon. A resource table will also offer visitors a chance for reflection with recent news on efforts to improve wildlife habitats and how the public can better coexist with animals in an increasingly modern landscape. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Looking at Impressionism and Thinking About Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Art Matters Lecture with Harmon Siegel\, Ph.D.\nJunior Fellow\, Harvard Society of Fellows \nImpressionism has\, from the beginning\, been seen as an art of nature. Today\, however\, in the moment we call the Anthropocene\, when human projects have transformed every corner of the planet and threaten to make it uninhabitable\, this commitment may seem hopelessly naive. In fact\, however\, impressionist paintings illuminate our condition\, revealing the entanglement of nature and society. In so doing\, they help us overcome nostalgia for a lost nature and recognize our responsibility for shaping the world we inhabit.

SUMMARY:THE MOTHER HIPS W/ SUPPORT BY COFFIS BROTHERS
DESCRIPTION:Founded nearly 30 years ago while Bluhm and Loiacono were still just students at Chico State\, The Mother Hips caught their first big break before they’d even graduated from college\, when legendary producer and industry icon Rick Rubin signed the band to his American Recordings label. In the decades to come\, the group would go on to release ten critically acclaimed studio albums and cement themselves as architects of a new breed of California rock and soul\, one equally informed by the breezy harmonies of the Beach Boys\, the funky roots of The Band\, and the psychedelic Americana of Buffalo Springfield. Hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “one of the Bay Area’s most beloved live outfits\,” the group’s headline and festival performances became the stuff of legend and helped earn them dates with everyone from Johnny Cash and Wilco to Lucinda Williams and The Black Crowes. Rolling Stone called the band “divinely inspired\,” while Pitchfork praised their “rootsy mix of 70’s rock and power pop\,” and The New Yorker lauded their ability to “sing it sweet and play it dirty.”

With inflation creating sticker shock at stores\, come find the best prices in town at Trinity Lutheran Church Flea Market.\n“We have been collecting all year for this Flea Market and have a huge number of great items to sell. Make this Flea Market your first stop for shopping and avoid the holiday crowds\,” says Judy Larson\, member at Trinity Lutheran Church and Flea Market organizer.\nThe Flea Market features Christmas décor and gifts as well as art\, ceramics\, kitchen goods\, furniture\, books\, linens\, jewelry\, paper goods\, toys\, adult and kids clothing and hand-mades like sweaters and Christmas stockings\, and so much more.\nThe Flea Market will open December 3 at 10 am and runs until 2 pm and then December 4 it will open 10:30 am to 1 pm. The proceeds from the Trinity Lutheran Church Flea Market benefits Trinity Gardens\, a non-profit organization who grows organic produce to meet the food needs of our community\, and provides gardening and food education. The harvesting of food from the garden supports programs at Grace Food Pantry. An orchard in the garden provides fruit to feed the hungry in Santa Barbara.\nFunds raised by the Flea Market will also support Grace Food Pantry\, which provides healthy and nutritional foods\, including “kitchen-less kits” for clients who lack access to cooking facilities.\n“It is fantastic way to beat inflation this year!” says Pastor Mark Marius of Trinity Lutheran Church. “Community members can purchase creative gifts at affordable prices and know that the proceeds support feeding programs in our community.”\n###

SUMMARY:Carp History Museum’s Holiday Marketplace
DESCRIPTION:The Carpinteria Valley Historical Society and History Museum will host its Marketplace on Saturday\, Dec. 3\, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the museum grounds at 956 Maple Ave. in Carpinteria. \n“In response to our vendors\, attendees\, and museum volunteers\, we’re starting a new tradition of having the holiday-themed Marketplace in December rather than Thanksgiving weekend\,” said Jayme Yahr\, executive director and curator of the nonprofit organization. \nAs always\, the Marketplace will be filled with a large variety of goods for sale including handcrafted gifts\, toys\, antiques\, furniture\, jewelry\, clothing\, plants\, musical instruments\, household items including quilts\, kitchenware\, and chinaware\, among other treasures. Of special note are the 25 cent and $1 tables at Granny’s Attic\, the booth operated by the museum. \nLocal baker and native Carpinterian Christina Welch\, founder of Dinkelbrot\, will be selling Einkorn\, an ancient grain bread. Hearty\, dense\, and made from spelt\, Einkorn is original wheat that has not been genetically modified unlike today’s wheat that causes stomach issues such as bloating\, gluten sensitivity\, and celiac disease. For more information or orders\, Welch can be contacted on Instagram @dinkelbrot_carpinteria or (805) 451-1327. \nThe free admission to the Marketplace also includes music by the Sweet Strings Sisters. Michele Harris-Padrón and Christi Hudson are the acoustic duo of the Sweet Strings Sisters. The two former educators play folk\, traditional\, oldies\, and original tunes.  Find more information at facebook.com/sweetstringsisters. The duo will play from 10 to 11:30 am\, followed by Mavis Hansen and her talented group of ukulele players from 11:45am to 1:15pm. \nHot dogs\, cold beverages\, and snacks will be available for purchase. \nFor more information\, call the museum at (805) 684-3112 or visit carpinteriahistoricalmuseum.org. The first Marketplace for 2023 is scheduled for Feb. 25.
