SUMMARY:Community Poetry Readings with UCSB Reads & Goleta Valley Library
DESCRIPTION:Register Now\nJoin UCSB Reads and Goleta Valley Library for an afternoon of poetry readings in celebration of National Poetry Month! \nThe event will kick off with a reading by current Santa Barbara Poet Laureate George Yatchisin and UCSB Professor Emerita Shirley Geok-Lin Lim. Afterward\, other participants will read their selected poems to the audience. \nInspired by UCSB Reads and this year’s selection\, Crying in H Mart\, the event highlights poetry as a creative practice that\, like memoir\, allows personal stories to take form through creative expression and be shared with others. \nHow to participate? Please complete this form with your name and the title and author of the published poem you’d like to read by April 13th. All genres and styles are welcome. You are also welcome to submit original work. Participants will be confirmed and notified by April 15th. Whether you’re sharing a published work or something you’ve written yourself\, we encourage a diverse range of voices and styles. \nThis event is free and open to all students\, staff\, faculty\, and community members. \nThe event may be photographed or recorded. \nImage Description: Grid of 4 images containing different people reading books\, with the UCSB Reads Badge logo in the bottom right image

SUMMARY:AI in Action: Fabian Offert & Eric Wang
DESCRIPTION:Register Now\nJoin us for the second event in UCSB Library’s new speaker series\, AI in Action Conversations with UCSB Researchers. The event features short presentations by Fabian Offert (Center for the Humanities and Machine Learning) and Eric Wang (Center for Responsible Machine Learning) on innovative applications of AI in their research\, followed by a 30-minute discussion on broader trends\, challenges\, and ethical considerations. \nThis event may be photographed or recorded. \nAdvance registration is recommended as space is limited. \nAbout the Speakers\nDr. Fabian Offert is Assistant Professor for the History and Theory of the Digital Humanities and Director of the Center for the Humanities and Machine Learning (HUML) at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. His research and teaching focuses on the epistemology\, aesthetics\, and politics of artificial intelligence. His most recent book project\, Vector Media (Meson Press/University of Minnesota Press\, 2026)\, provides the first comprehensive history and theory of vector space as a space of universal commensurability in contemporary machine learning. Offert is also principal investigator of the AI Forensics international research project on explainable artificial intelligence\, supported by the Volkswagen Foundation\, and was 2025 Rudolf Wittkower Fellow at the Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for Art History in Rome. \nDr. Xin (Eric) Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department and Director of the Center for Responsible Machine Learning (CRML) at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. He also serves as the Head of Research at Simular. His research interests include Natural Language Processing\, Computer Vision\, and Machine Learning\, with an emphasis on Multimodal and Embodied AI Agents. Previously\, he was a faculty at UC Santa Cruz and also spent time at Google Research\, Meta FAIR\, Microsoft Research\, and Adobe Research. Wang’s research aims to build intelligent multimodal AI agents that can understand the world\, collaborate with humans\, and perform real-world tasks—from everyday activities to high-stakes missions. His work spans multimodal representation learning\, embodied AI for human-agent collaboration\, and the ethical design of trustworthy AI systems. \nAbout AI in Action\nAI in Action: Conversations with UCSB Researchers aims to foster an open\, interdisciplinary community exploring how AI can deepen understanding\, expand access to knowledge\, and inspire new forms of scholarship. The speaker series showcases how UC Santa Barbara researchers are using innovative applications of AI\, from accelerating materials science and environmental modeling to uncovering new insights in language\, art\, and history. Each session includes presentations by UCSB faculty and research teams on how AI tools and methods are shaping their work\, followed by discussion on broader trends\, challenges\, and ethical considerations. \nAI in Action is co-led by UCSB Library and the UCSB AI Community of Practice (CoP)\, AI for Research Special Interest Group\, with support from the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost\, Office of Research\, Office of Teaching and Learning\, Marine Science Institute\, and National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis.

SUMMARY:AI in Action Speaker Series Launch and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of UCSB Library’s new speaker series AI in Action Conversations with UCSB Researchers. The event features short presentations by Tobias Fischer (Director\, Earth Research Institute)\, Ben Halpern (Executive Director\, National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis) and Rebecca Vega Thurber (Director\, Marine Science Institute) on innovative applications of AI in their research\, followed by a 30-minute discussion on broader trends\, challenges\, and ethical considerations\, and a reception. \nFischer will present an overview of the use of AI in the Earth Research Institute (ERI) with examples on how AI is used in research projects. \nIn his presentation titled “Using AI Effectively and Responsibly in Environmental Data Science and Synthesis\,” Halpern will share a few highlights of applications and lessons learned on how AI is changing the nature of research projects at NCEAS\, and how we can continue to use AI responsibly. \nIn her presentation titled “Using Deep Learning/AI to explore System Agnostic Microbiome Measures\,” Thurber will discuss her work using advanced bioinformatics and deep learning to compare microbiome studies and identify unifying principles of how microbiomes function and thus contribute to animal health. This work aims to synthesize numerous studies on animal microbiomes\, revealing system independent microbiome features that transcend hosts. Such work will ideally pinpoint critical aspects of host-microbiome interactions and how they can be used to advance animal health\, ecosystem resilience\, and resource management. \nThis event may be photographed or recorded. \nAdvance registration is recommended as space is limited.
